Alvaro is one of the roles Pavarotti should have done on stage and recorded in the studio. His voice was perfectly suited to it. Just listening to this clip gives us a glimpse of how great his performance may have been. He nearly ended up playing the role in the MET but they had to cancel it. :( Leo Nucci is amazing, just listen to the amplitude of his voice, wow!
I've seen Luciano sing this with other singers, but Leo Nucci is the best. He's a wonderful singer and actor. If I'm not mistaken, Pavarotti never sang this role on stage because he was very superstitious and thought it would bring him bad luck
I agree Pavarotti is meant to be a great lyric tenor and the role of Don Alvaro was for the tradition of spinto tenors like Franco Corelli and dramatic tenors like Mario Del Monaco.

Such a lazy singer Luciano. Looking at the score he botches the text and rhythms. Any serious opera lover could have prompted him from the audience. This is very famous operatic music.
You are right, sometimes they arrive at a concert and don't have a notice of what they will have to sing. Not joking. In the morning a quick rehearsel and in the evening the performance. And on top of that, dear friends, this is not a part for Pavarotti's voice. But, I am sure, we all miss him.

Not a case of unpreparedness on Pavarotti's part. He never sang the full opera or the part because he was quite superstitious about it.
this was published in 2008 but Luciano died in 2007 so maybe this was not long before he passed.
1995 is quite a bit before.
P.'s memorization problems began very early. And I don' think he appreciated N. outdoing his final A.
