    Sorry, no respect for anyone who does not have a basic understanding of the local language after five years. Especially if they were given a free university education. He could have taken the language courses that are also free for students.
    Winter depression is a real thing though. Won't be better in the UK, as they have the dark winters, too. The doctor might be able to help. And that service is also included in your compulsary health insurance.

    I’m only 5 minutes in but how can a person stay 5 years in a country and not know how to speak basic words in the language to communicate with strangers in stores and buses etc. he is not ready.

    I hope your friend had learned enough in Germany to get a good job back home. In essence that is the idea of giving foreign students a scholarship and admitting them to German colleges.

    We, the Germans, have to struggle for our daily lives. We have an excellent education, but everything is damn expensive.
    So my advice to everybody: STAY AWAY!
