      In some ways, I am upset by how much darker the series is than the book. Yes, the book was dark, very dark, but not as dark as the series. Just my opinion. I think in all likelihood, if Lombard had tried to talk her down peacefully in the book, in the end she might not have shot him. The fact that he lunged for her in the book was partly his demise. She already had the upper hand at that point, and no amount of swiftness would have matched her finger pulling the trigger. I would’ve just said “Vera, I know you’re not the murderer, and I trust you. Keep the gun if it makes you feel safer. I’m not going to harm you or try to take it away from you, and eventually you’ll realize that I can’t be the murderer. Keep on your guard, because I promise you the murderer is watching us to see how all this will turn out. The only way we can beat him is if we trust each other.”

    That conversation in the book about "one has got to trust someone" Vera and Philip could still be alive at the end. But there's no thrill if someone has to be alive, they should be dead, all of them because of their selfishness and sins. And yeah that's life 😅

    MacArthur was the most sympathetic of them. His wife cheated on him with another man. No matter the circumstances, that’s wrong. If she had only been honest with him, things might have turned out differently. But because they were keeping it a secret behind his back, that in part was what caused him to lose it. It was as though they were laughing at him behind his back. Adulterers were put to death in the Old Testament. The fact that the murderer considers MacArthur’s crime to be worthy of death shows he has no real care for justice, or punishing the wicked. He’s just a sadist who uses their crimes as an excuse to practice his sadism on them. I’m not saying their crimes weren’t worthy of death, I’m just saying that his was worse.

    • @x_n_x_gal9161
      @x_n_x_gal9161 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In the book, MacArthur didn't shoot the lover directly, he was the commander of the young man's division (or what it's called in the army idk XD) and he sent them all on a mission that he knew would result in their death to take revenge while making it seem like a "natural" death in battle. In the series, they made his character more impulsive and affective, in the book he planned and considered it all in cold-blood. I have been cheated on and it's horrible, but there are other ways to take revenge then to kill someone. And also, in the book, other soldiers who had nothing to do with the love affair die for the sake of MacArthur's revenge, so technically he "killed" several people in the books, while in the movie the viewer gets sympathy for him since they made the murder into sudden rush of madness.

    I like the adaptation, but it did a horrible job in certain respects. I wish they had been more faithful to the source material. They took lots of liberties with the characters to make them seem more like they might be the killer. The characters were already quite cold-blooded. For example, in the book, Blore was a corrupt policeman who perjured his testimony in a bank robbery case to convict an innocent man (James Landor) and receive a generous payment from the gang who actually did the crime. With the blood money, Blore could quit the force and set up his own private eye business. Landor died in prison when he caught pneumonia. His family likely were destitute and had lost their breadwinner. It was only on the last night of his own life that Blore even remembered the Landor family and wondered what happened to them. The only time I felt sorry for Blore in the series was when he was wishing he had stayed home to tend to his garden. I can’t say I felt very sorry for him in the book.

      She is a psycho who thought that he was the killer which makes sense since no one else was on the island and she wanted to save herself from also being killed but ends up killing herself anyway because of guilt! It’s a survival of the fittest kind of the thing.

    • @brianbommarito3376
      @brianbommarito3376 5 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      That’s why I prefer the stage version from the 1940’s. In that version (which Agatha Christie also wrote), it turns out Philip and Vera are actually innocent and only have the appearance of being guilty, and in the end they both trick the killer U.N. Owen and escape the Island and live happily ever after. I know it’s not the original book ending, but it is the ending I prefer. If the adaptation had been smart, they would’ve filmed both endings and then saved the “happy ending” for the DVD release as a bonus feature.

I believe they should have left it that way but of course they always make changes. In this case they did it just to spice things up but in my opinion it was irrelevant and definitely not needed.

    Poor stupid Vera. Deceived by Hugo , who claimed to love her,she understands she made a killer of herself and there's no escape of that. How is simple to commit a murder, u can feel justified by your poorness, by a subtle bastard, by the promise of a better life ...a life no more as a servant. The character of Miss Claythorne should be much more investigated, like the ones of Macarthur,Brent,Armstrong,at least. What pisses me off is that this great adaptation of the novel I love since my childhood, still forces and changes primary details ...
