  • Peter Falk directs the Season 1 finale. Did he do a good job?
    I own nothing.

Another great review. You're really good at summing up the episodes and I like your editing. The Metal Gear Solid sound effect made me chuckle. Blueprint for Murder is a great episode, for sure. Falk did a real fine job.

Peter Falk played Columbo flawlessly, he never “faltered” in that capacity. Columbo is a great character, he is excellently portrayed by Falk as a real human being with all of the flaws, eccentricities, quirks, strengths, and weaknesses of a real human being. In every episode, Falk always portrayed a quirk or trait that made Columbo real, like his untidiness, or forgetfulness (rather strange for a detective), or a weakness-like his aversion to blood (another strange quality for a detective to have). I have always loved this show. I watch it anytime that it is on, it never gets old.

To play devil's advocate: Must disagree about the blown tire being a 'fantastically tense scene.' There's no way a cop from CHiPs is going to find the dead body in the truck and effectively end the episode.
It would be AMUSING to end the show before Columbo even solves the crime but hardly likely. Overall a superfluous scene that adds nothing to the storyline, unlike the comical Columbo side scenes that DO matter (seamstress in "Swan Song," tailor in "Candidate for Crime," driving instructor in "Negative Reaction," etc.) Overall, a lackluster episode with too many red herrings. Plus the ending with all the headlights was already used a few episodes earlier in "Death Lends a Hand."

All things being relative, your comment is a meaningless one. The purpose of forums such as this is to encourage freedom of expression, especially in relation one's opinion and aesthetic judgement. What gives you the audacity to question my right to declare what I believe to be the best in this regard!
P.S. I have never encounted such bizarre use of punctuation. Could you, perhaps, refer me to the primer which you use.

I like how we didn't know the killers plan til the very ending. In fact I wondered if we were being tricked & was he the killer at all since other episodes tell us & show us the crime & cover up while this showed hints he was the killer but never gave any finality til the very end

My problem, along with scenes that I felt dragged a bit (on the construction site, mainly), was that Patrick O'Neal's voice was grating to mine ear. Every time he opened his mouth. Just a personal thing.

The piece of music heard at the end is composed by Gil Mellé as his own sort of theme for Columbo; it appears during the end credits of the four episodes he scored (Death Lends a Hand, Dead Weight, Short Fuse and Blueprint for Murder). A wonderful piece of music from a talented man.

The MZB Patrick O'Neal drives is the same one used in the Episode with Jack Cassidy and Martin Milliner. When O'Neal gets pulled over he is asked to show a drivers license. Look at it closely(not on this video) it is the one Colombo uses. His picture is on it.

You’re right and wrong at the beginning of this video. Yes, there was tension and production issues between Peter and the company. It isn’t that he wanted to write an episode and they would not let him. It’s more of the situation where he was in his contract that he could direct an episode. And they were trying to weasel out on that particular clause of the contract.

Wow. You picked up on that incredible Gill Mille Colombo theme that was never used again after season 1. The music score for the 2 pilots before were equally outstanding but after that it was just crap full of obligatory 80's alto sax solos but this was just class by Gill.

Supposedly, they gave him a difficult to shoot script on purpose since Faulk caused so much trouble trying to get them to keep their word. I don't like what Faulk did, however it does appear they had no intention of letting him direct. Considering how hard the script was to shoot, It really says something to Faulk's talent that he made one of the most remembered episodes. I would have loved to see him do another. I wish he had survived long enough to see how much people liked his directing.
