This is perfect! Like many others, converting my old VHS tapes to digital and found a few "stuck" ones that needed some special help. Appreciate you show using the anatomy and helping us learn how to solve these simple problems!

Of course it helped out! I asked myself time and time again as I grew up what was holding the spools in place when attempting to manually rewind the VHS tape. I was puzzled by this fact, since with audio cassettes I wasn't encountering resistance when manually rewinding, unless the spools were clogged in the margins or the tape was stuck or what not, which would also cause audio cassettes to resist the manual rewind; it sucks when that happens, and I managed to break a audio tape like this. Good that these things are somewhat fixable with a bit of mechanical skill.

Major thank you! My VHS player would do this annoying thing where it would rewind the VHS for a bit before stopping, and after that it would only rewind for one minute at a time.
Thank you! there is a tape so badly damaged because when i was younger i tried to use it as a "retro necklace." However, it only damaged about 10 secs of footage. But, the vcr would stop rewinding as soon as it hit the damaged part, even though it would play through it (barely). It played once, because it was already rewinded, but when i tried to rewind it, it stopped. This video was so helpful!
I knew there was a way, I didn't want to have to buy a rewinder specifically for ones the TV wouldn't rewind 🙄 you just saved my daughter's Elmo and Barney tapes! 🤣 I'm not sure if I'm happy about that or not yet LOL

For spinning the tape you can cut an old credit/gift card to the right width. I used a lathe screw (a short screw with a wide head, used for chicken wire and such) for the release hole.
I watched Pixar's Wall-E and I was shock, how Wall-E doing that? He fixed tape and I'm confused and now I saw your video, ah I get it Edit: omg, it's worked! I fixed Pixar's A Bug's Life tape! Thank you!
I have a problem with one tape. Instead of loosening, it seems it is overtightening at one point midway and stopping and the vcr thinks its the end and either rewinds or ejects it.
what do we do if that circular "button" is missing? i am able to manually move the tape forward and backward by way of inserting something in that hole to take the place of the button being depressed (which then allows the white spools to move and therefore the tape as well) but since that little button seems to have broken off, the vcr cant/wont move the tape spool forward automatically and it just ejects immediately after hitting play.
Ok, now I just need an adapter for my electric screwdriver. The rewind function somehow doesnt work any more at my Panasonic nv-fs88, have to rewind hundreds of tapes, xD
This dudes mind is clearly going. Anyone who grew up with VHS knows that the tip of a butter knife is the best way to rewind a tape. He uses such a half ass method.

I bought some disney VHS tapes at Goodwill yesterday, and watched the Lion King, so this guide was helpful, also some of the tapes are not rewinded 😂

Using a drill with a special made wood bit would be much faster, don't you think?
I put a sharpie into my power drill to do it and it worked!

There are screws to take apart the tape. You may be able to fix the button if you dismantle it.
