One of my favorite GenCon memories was back in 2010. I was running Twilight 2000... the old school version. At that point it was over 25 years old, and I was surprised I sold out (10 seats) in minutes. When I was running the game at GC, this balding old guy with a scraggly beard stops by and watches for a bit, smiling. I didn't pay it much mind -- at GenCon, people stop by and watch games in progress all the time. While the players were putting their minis on the map, the bearded guy says, "Twilight 2000, right?" with a big Cheshire Cat grin. "Yep!" I said... "Ever played it?" "Oh, a few times. Back in the 80s. Have fun, now!" And then he wandered off. It wasn't until weeks later I found out, that was Frank Chadwick.
I used to play this system when I was actually stationed in northern Germany in the US Army as a Cav Scout prior to and during the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Didn't play this until I joined the US Navy in the mid-80s, but I was born and raised in Germany, left in '83. But my cousin was a DJ with Radio Free Berlin when the wall came down...
I was a straight-leg infantry reservist back in the late 80s and through the 90s. All this was so real in those days, - we were practicing for WW3. We played 1e a lot back in the day and I still have all my 1e stuff. Can’t wait for my Kickstarter to arrive.
One of the best sandbox games you'll ever play. I was the king of NYC. Nothing opens doors up better then dropping a 105 round into Little Italy to prove a point. Made a base out of the UN building, and ran peacekeeping and humanitarian missions out of there and Roosevelt Island. We played a few games with other characters and brought them in from all over the world. Was a great time back in the 80's, but we really had to tweak out a lot of rules issues and technical stuff to let the game flow.
_Twilight: 2000_ was both exciting and terrifying when we ran it in the 80s, 'cause it was a little too real at the time. Was weird playing a 'realistic' post-apocalypse setting when you had _Threads_ and _The Day After_ playing on the TV.
It's just as terrifying and "a little too real" today, when I'm running it in Warsaw, barely 300km away from Lviv getting hit by Russian missiles and 150km away from Belarussian and Russian troops massing and training near Brest...
So much fun making characters! The addition of Ross and Kate makes it funny, fascinating and wonderfully low on the super silly . Throw in Joe's energy, drama heavy GM'ing with his great visuals and this might be my perfect game. More, more, more!
NBC = Nuclear, Biological, Chemical - In the Military is training in handling, decontamination, and disposal of Nuclear, Biological and Chemical agents and how to operate within areas that are affected by NBC weapons (Radioactive, Chemical and Biological contaminated).
So with the fallout from the D&D OGL fiasco recently I was finally able to convince my players to try something different and we have settled on either Tales from the Loop or Twilight 2000. This video has been great for refreshing myself on the chargen rules for for T2k
@43:23 Ross Bryant: "Somebody shows up at your door". I graduated HS in 1991, and that was me my senior year in High School after taking the ASVAB. It was free to take, and I got out of a few classes that were growing a bit pedantic. I just wanted to not be bored, and ended up scoring 98% and having every bloody branch of the military almost literally beating down my parents' door. Would have gotten a 99 at least, if I hadn't started in the wrong column because I was so excited at the code section. It was just like how I broke non-software copy protections on software at the time. Ask Skid.
I graduated the same year, and had the same problem. They all swarmed in, but Navy called me daily. Everybody wanted me for nuclear or chemical... except the very persistent Marine recruiter that thought I would make a great EOD specialist. I chose college... sort of. Good times!
This brought back memories. I was born and raised in Germany, we emigrated to the US in '83 when I was almost 16 (the Irish last name is courtesy of my stepfather), so growing up with the threat of war with the USSR was very real for me. I played T2K 1E in the mid-80's after joining the US Navy, and ran a few campaigns at my FLGS after moving to Utah in 1990. Currently I'm waiting on my Kickstarter shipment to arrive 😁 Funny thing about Skid's character: as soon as he said French, working class, brawler, the first thing that popped into my head (before he even said it) was Marseille, lol
The bow is a very good choice. 'Mad Jack' Churchill led his troops back to Dunkirk going ahead and actually shooting Germans with his bow - although, to be fair, he WAS a olympic-level archer...
I played this once or twice with my fellow tankers while stationed at Fort Hunter Liggett, California, in the 1980s. The scenario was that the players were remnants of the first Armored Division in Poland, trying to make their way back to some type of higher authority. While they had their rifles, they were on foot; but there was an unfueled M1A1 tank in a deep defile, covered with branches to hide it from sight. They were supposed to fight a local militia for possession of it, and there was a local mechanic in the tank trying to fix it when they approached. The players heard him moving around in the tank and decided it was a trap, so they moved off without investigating further. Assuming they could have gotten it moving (there were rules for players being able to synthesize fuel from organic ingredients) they would have been an important force to recon with, but alas, their caution kept them traveling on their LPC's (Leather Personnel Carriers, also known as "shoes").
My psyops quote: "It is not only the blade that cuts, not only the point that impales: smite thine enemy with terror, confusion, and self-doubt, for these are the wounds the bleed despair and lead to victory at arms."
I played this back in the '80s and got on the Kickstarter for this 4th edition. Have been reading the rules and one thing that got me was the reduction in nationalities. In the original, your choices were the USA, Canadian, British, West German, Danish, Polish, Hungarian, Czech, and then soviet block which lists another 15. I also think I like the character creation in the original better. But that said cannot wait until my box set finally arrives and I can organize a game.
Nailed it Joe, this cast is amazing! I've been waiting to see Ross and Skid together and you always have great energy, Kate and this mysterious mustached man are great to round out the group; excited for more!
@52:00 Skid's rolling at first reminded me of an anecdote involving Gary Gygax. He did not roll on the table behind his screen, he rolled on his chair between his legs. Gygax had a custom made gaming table. It was hardwood and heavy, and he got a little excited during one game and ended up fracturing his wrist. According to the storyteller, this was at a GenCon in the early to mid-80s. Thank you guys so much for bringing back some of the period memories.
Just catching this show now. I find it funny that at the age of 28 her character begins to feel the effects of age, but it makes sense. So very cool. :)
I just came across this. In the 80s, I played this ALOT! After the first edition, there was V2.0, then V2.2, then Twilight 2013 (not many people seemed to like it), and not this fifth version, so to speak.
Thanks for sharing that picture of your father Grant - great picture. Those guys were REALLY unappreciated - thank you for your service sir!!! Also SOOOOO excited about this re-boot. I have been looking online for YEARS to see what the status was. This game has a long sordid history of failed take overs that never got it back into circulation. Good luck Fee League - I can't wait to buy it!!!
Looking forward to how this turns out, not only did I play this in the 80s, but also in the 90s.... 2000s.... and the 20-teens.. lol... I've run this for years... just waiting on my huge bundle from this kick starter... I'm planning on running it again soon. I like how they randomized the Pcs and I think I may give my players this option as well.
I also played back in the 80s, did not come back to the game until the mid 2000s and the 2013 version of the game, which I only ran a little bit (it was a lot more cumbersome than this version seems to be). Wanting to watch more of these streams to get an idea on this new version before I take the plunge to buy it
The physical copies are finally being delivered. Ordered the metal box set. Very much looking forward to it. Ran a 2nd Edition campaign for close to a year and I was living in Germany when the Berlin Wall came down.
Having watched all 5 episodes and coming back to this there is so much dramatic irony in some of the comments about gm-ing style and gear. Makes for a very interesting rewatch experience. ALL the foreshadowing…
As an Australian, I thank you for your apology to the French. I am disgusted and disillusioned by the actions of our PM. He does not represent Australia, it's people, or our values. Great series, am really enjoying it. Awaiting my core set, hopefully next week. Thanks.
I was in the US infantry. At one point, I was pretty brainwashed and my brain went to very dark and scary places. I think I'd play the alternate version of the me that almost was. I'm full of empathy now and a pacifist lol Old me was neither.
This was a good watch. I can remember what it was like back in '89 when I lived in Germany, back then it was West and East Germany. It was an incredible time for the German people and life changing.
T2K is a game I always wanted to play in the 1990s but never got a chance. I ran some Twilight:2013 games a few years ago, but this new version seems much more streamlined with an emphasis on storytelling.
Absolutely. I thought the same thing when they played Alien, but this game took that concept even further. I am so excited to see how they develop the story, and what Kate brings to the table as her cover. These next two episodes are going to be amazing!
Been playing Twilight: 2000 since the first edition. I was skeptical about this new version until I played Alien from Free League. My preorder is in. Looks great.
Just found this channel and happy to get some examples of this new edition for Twilight 2000. I played the original back in high school back in the late 80's and had a lot of fun with the system. The best part of Kate making munitions and it being compared to printing money is that you fire them and therefore prevent "inflation" because the currency is destroyed. Kinda.
Wow, cool game! That map of Poland is just so...atmospheric in its simplicity. Cold war got hot, baby! ...and Ross 'n Skid at the same table is just too much to wish for!
I haven't heard of this game, but man, after listening to this first episode I am soooo pumped for the next installment. Four great role players with Joe GMing this and going for a more serious, dark and gritty tone; sure seems like a recipe for some awesome gaming sessions to me! Ruins, winter, the RNG dice Gods called it. I can almost smell the desperation. What does desperation smell like? I think we're about to find out 😮
It's a very very old game originally. It was pretty huge in the late 80's and not much was like it back when it come out, very militaristic, very gritty. Very soon a lot of other games stole that thunder and it was known as the most needlessly complicated character generation system in history.
The AK-74 would be standard issue for the Soviet troops. The AK-74SU was a really short version of the AK-74 rifle. Think of AK-74SU as a personal defense weapon. Mostly issued to vehicle crews or helicopter crews. Also police units in the Soviet Union. The Spetsnaz( Special Forces)troops really didn't like the AK-74SU. In extended combat situations. The AK-74SU tended to overheat. Now under special conditions the Spetsnaz would use the AK-74SU. A mission where concealment is a major concern. That could lead to a Spetsnaz Unit to use the AK-74SU. Otherwise the Spetsnaz tended to use the AK-74S with a side folding triangular stock.
I’m friends with a bunch of ex military dudes, and one of them led us through this system. Set after everything went to crap, we were the “away team” of a US Military convoy rolling through the Middle East picking up US Citizens and headed for a port city (I forgot where) to try to secure passage to the United States (or link up with a US Navy ship. I forgot since we didn’t get that far.) I played a CIA SAD (Special Activities Division, basically spec ops for the spooks) who linked up with the convoy later on. He rocked an integrally suppressed MP5, and immediately picked up an AKM so he could loot ammo from bad guys.
Virtually every medium sized town in the U.S. formed a SWAT team and mostly used it to serve low level bench warrants--just "in case" there was a hostage situation.
Skid Maher's background: Kraków 20km. :D Yep. That's Poland. 3:36 At second attempt he almost got it. Krahkoov, where oo is like in doom and w like "V for vendetta".
I too have tumbled BADLY down the rabbit hole. Until literally like 3 weeks ago, I was far, far too cool to watch play streams: "Lame! I'd rather play than watch a bunch of try-hard nerds. Pft." I'm now devouring your playthroughs, might even go Patreon, and waiting impatiently for Friday nights and Time for Chaos. So thanks for being awesome.
GDW had life paths for all of their RPGs. Started with 1st edition Traveller and carried over into their other IPs, which made GDW games unique. Fun fact, in Traveller 1E your character could actually die during creation... lol
I love these videos. Like the idea of this game but my initial thought was that think I will stick with the D20 version. However, after watching the videos, I decided to buy the new version and give it a roll. Theater of the mind, likely, like you played, Im not a square counting type.

I been falling down the Glass Cannon rabbit hole and been watching so many videos and it is great to see an old RPG I played being reborn.
This one was so much fun!
LOL, I was 12 when the wall came down. I remember being in school when they put up the video from CNN in the Classroom

Welcome to Poland. I recommend lard spread with sour cucumbers on still warm sourdough bread, helps the hooch go down the pipe.
Randomly came across this and I’m so impressed love the dynamics of the group
Thank you!! You should check out our other New Game, Who Dis? content or one of our many podcast! glasscannonnetwork.com/
You know, this is the only role play session/series, that I rewatch.. this was a masterpiece..
Thanks!
Free City of Krakow, The Black Madonna, and Pirates of the Vistula are required reading, if your going to play this game.
Skid is truly a Game Historian - Most people today never knew the Golden age of RPGs and GDW. We are lucky to have him. WOLVERINES!

Skid, I can't think of a better person to play a frenchman. We are now temporarily brothers in arms. This is going to be fun!
Ohhh I'm also playing a character with french accent. Happy to join the club

How did it go! :)
Grant: the fighter
Kate: the rogue
Skid: the healer
Ross: the bard
brilliant.
Thanks!
Kate should make some Rambo explosive arrows. Her character has so much potential for shenanigans.
The physical copies are finally being delivered. Ordered the metal box set. Very much looking forward to it. Ran a 2nd Edition campaign for close to a year and I was living in Germany when the Berlin Wall came down.

"I wanna be a real rando." quote of the night by Ross Bryant. Thanks for the show, folks!
As an Australian, I thank you for your apology to the French. I am disgusted and disillusioned by the actions of our PM. He does not represent Australia, it's people, or our values. Great series, am really enjoying it. Awaiting my core set, hopefully next week. Thanks.

Ross already won me over with the 5e game, this only cemented it. He's a great addition.
I totally agree. I have really enjoyed him in the Blades games too. I really hope we see more of him on the GCN.

This is the best episode 1 of all the new game who dis. imo. thank you guys for these.
Fantastic to see this! I played this game just after it came out, as a soldier in Germany in the mid-80s, in a nuclear missile unit.

And you probably create a lot of change in form of brass. Take it to the bank
Looking forward to hear their take on the system. Our group had a lot of fun playing this. :D
This is one of the best NGWD since Delta Green :D
Skid: Amazing musical improv!
musical = lyrical.
LOL - Small town American sniper - Sounds like a good movie🥰 First episode and Im loving this one 🥰
Wow, cool game! That map of Poland is just so...atmospheric in its simplicity. Cold war got hot, baby!
...and Ross 'n Skid at the same table is just too much to wish for!
All I know is I wish I was as beautiful as Kate and talented as skid…. Love this crew!
We demand more!!!!
This was absolutely so FUN!!!
You guys are great!
Thanks!
I just bought the core box during free league’s Black Friday sale. Can’t wait to play this. Also comes with solo rules
It is a great game. Hope you enjoy it!
Rewatching because you guys were so great together 😊. Hopefully maybe you will continue on. Played the orig. and love the 4th. Ok time to 🍿

Really enjoyed this zero sesh, im grabbing this game.
Is Ross Bryant just an alternate reality/dimension Grant Berger?
Instead of reading he learned the standard issue armaments from every police/military force in the last 50 years
I really like this episode. Thank you All. And really want to play this game.
This game is looking promising!
I really wish the "New Game, Who Dis?"-series could be found as a podcast in Spotify etc. (At least i had trouble finding it if it actually is.)
I believe they're avaliable on the £8 (Tier 2) Patreon tier
So glad they made this edition of the game actually playable.
Wow. I like the genre!
Improvised munitions. "Is that a knife taped to a grenade? Is...is...is that a knife taped to your car?"
If you like this setting, I highly recommend the graphic novel. "War's End: Profiles From Bosnia 1995-1996"
by Joe Sacco
The original T2K did have a life path system
Ross is such a good fit for Glass Cannon Network. Pity the relationship did not continue.
?? Is Ross no longer doing GCN shows?
SWAT also require at least one previous term of Police Officer
Shit, I can remember playing this back in 1993. Wow. How many characters did I go through again...3...?
I too have tumbled BADLY down the rabbit hole. Until literally like 3 weeks ago, I was far, far too cool to watch play streams: "Lame! I'd rather play than watch a bunch of try-hard nerds. Pft." I'm now devouring your playthroughs, might even go Patreon, and waiting impatiently for Friday nights and Time for Chaos. So thanks for being awesome.
Welcome aboard!
Fantastic😂
This reeeaaallyyyy makes me want them to play the Fallout RPG
Yes, GDW's Twilight 2000 had a life path system, as did GDW's Dark Conspiracy and Traveller New Era. You took 4 year terms.
Oh, and how can I forget Cadillacs and Dinosaurs.
GDW had life paths for all of their RPGs. Started with 1st edition Traveller and carried over into their other IPs, which made GDW games unique. Fun fact, in Traveller 1E your character could actually die during creation... lol
There is also a connection between Traveller and Twilight 2000. Traveller 2300 AD backstory is based on Twilight 2000 occuring.
I love these videos. Like the idea of this game but my initial thought was that think I will stick with the D20 version. However, after watching the videos, I decided to buy the new version and give it a roll. Theater of the mind, likely, like you played, Im not a square counting type.
