Having grown up in Freehold in the 1950's, 60's and 70's, (and beyond), I can answer that for you--it was an ego transference trip--like guys in the GEICO commercials. We all rooted for Springsteen to make it big because he represented us--what we all imagined ourselves to be or what we wanted to be. Freehold was a small hole-in-the-doughnut town that the outside world knew nothing about until Bruce came along. Freehold was a densely populated town surrounded by farms when Bruce grew up. It was a cool place where the kids knew each other, played sandlot ball, congregated on Friday nights, went to the football games on Saturdays. This was all before there were schools in Howell, Manalapan, Colt Neck, etc, etc. Freehold was the cultural locus of that area of Monmouth county during Bruce's and our adolescent years. That's all gone now. But for us the memory remains and we cherish it.
I knock at the door of history no matter where it comes from, who it might be about, give a nod to any significance that includes Present and Future. Springsteen received the Medal of Freedom from President Obama.. history!!!
