I was awarded this medal back in 2004 or 2005 or sometime back then.. I served from 1985-2006 so I got the G.W.O.T. but not the expeditionary medal I was title 10 activated but didn't deploy to Iraq I deployed to Okinawa Japan and the Korean D.M.Z. so I got the Korean defense Service Medal which is a rare Medal to be awarded. I'm proud of my Medals they were all earned..
My wife was a drilling Navy Reservist and received the GWOTSM. Then the GWOTEM for a six month deployment to Bahrain with her Warehouse Company in 2003. While on her deployment she was selected for promotion to Chief Yeoman. I myself was retired Air Force.
You should do some videos on the different ribbons that each state awards to National Guard soldiers. Although not each state awards their own ribbons, they are unique and would be an interesting topic. You could do one state per video and cover all the ribbons that state awards!
Looks like an end to an era... I always thought they should have had a more selective award of GWOTSM so would be more valued and less automatic. I never considered it directly redundant to the NDSM because of its history of being awarded for prior wartime periods, however it does seem that way since GWOTSM blanked awarded for those 21 years. Great info thanks for the video!
As a civilian who lived through the Global War on Terror, but who was never in the military, and is not from the USA, and doesn't even live there, I still feel i should get some kind of medal for all the craziness. 🏅
As a civilian employee of the US Army Corps of Engineers, I received three GWTS medals for three tours (4 years total) in Afghanistan. I also received the medal issued by NATO.
Lol, shoot as far as I was concerned, I joined the infantry to go to Afghanistan, I started learning Arabic and the crescendo to that journey was a month long stay at 29 palms and a 2 day battalion clear of a MOUT city complete with role players and translators, my entire section minus me and maybe two others was killed off within the first 40 minutes or so and I ended the day by jumping through windows with two mortar tubes we never used during night ops. That experience and helping train Marines and Navy SEALs for the upcoming MEU while tasked out to EOTG, those are the things I attribute to the GWOT in my head. My only regret was not having been a role player in the building the SEALs raided. I was sick as a dog that day and so we drove out to this one spot to simulate mortars. But I’d have liked to experience what it’s like to fight against a TIER one unit in simulated combat.
I served from 1984-2004 , never got a GWOT , or any other new medals . I served as a howitzer section chief , US Army, in Iraq during Desert Storm . I am wondering what I am authorized to request as records update , thanks for all you do …I also served in Korea 1999-2000.
I served on the Iron Curtain and was held at gunpoint by East Germans and Russians. Medals ZERO! We were always being attacked by RAF Bader Meinhof Gang and no terrorism medal 🤣 No National Defense service medal after I was inducted on April 30th 1975 during the Fall of Saigon. Medals and the black Beret given out like candy. The Black Beret was only allowed to CAV Regiment. My tattoos are my Medals. The DOD has screwed over Cold War Veterans. We faced the Soviet Union on the tip of the spear facing nuclear missiles, which I could visually see in the Fulda Gap.. The Cold War Veterans have been screwed and shit on.. Give them out to cruits who haven't gotten out of basic training and they get Medals🤣. FTA!!!!!
Agreed!!!!!!!!!! Served in US Army from 1981-2001 and all I got was a "certificate" for my service during the Cold War AND had my name mis-spelled on the darn thing!!!!! Served in the Fulda Gap in West Germany and down by Hoff along the border with Czechoslovakia and humped the DMZ in Korea. 5-years in Europe and 1-year in Korea.....Well, at least I got my Overseas Service Ribbon 3-times. Was a Drill Sergeant during Gulf War 1, so got the National Defense Service Medal. Glad I retired 2-months before the World Trade Center was attacked.
In the Army, 1975- 1981 was a dry spell for awards everywhere. Some alluded to the fact that once Vietnam ended they stopped the wholesale practice of awards on order to conduct the massive Reduction-In-Force. Plus, 1977-1980 was period of Jimmy Carter's Hollow Army.
The Marines have historically tried to pare down, limit and qualify all "at-a-boys" worn on our uniform. Until recent times, we had pretty much been successful.
something happened around the clinton era, where to my opinion uniform standards went out the window. The number of ribbons, badges and patches make many of our soldiers look like South American dictators.. Not a hater, cingrats if they earned it but do they have to wear EVERYTHING EVER AWARDED
I didn’t get my GWOT after OSUT. I remember receiving a piece of fancy paper in 2016 a month after being in Kosovo saying I received it 😂 I remember I only got my NDSM and my pride Army ribbon during graduation.
So are they going to take away my medal? Otherwise you have two medals doing the same thing. An era medal makes sense just like the Korean service ribbon.
Welcome to the DOD crap detail! When service members are reduced to filling slots with no recognition of faithful service. We Cold War veterans know all about this. We were dumped in 1983 by 110,000 with not even a thank you!
This is off topic. The Army just announced a recruitment ribbon for Soldiers that help a recruiter enlistment an individual. Is there anyway you can do a video on this?
No Milper message yet and no ribbon design has been announced. Army announced promotions for E1-E3 and promotion points for E4-E5. Max 40 promotion points and the ribbon can be award 4 times and additional awards will be denoted with a numeral. No announcement on whether or not it will also be eligible for the National Guard and the Reserves as well. EDIT Army Times announced that it will include the National Guard and Reserves.
I receive my GWOTSM in 2021. Since I received it prior to Sep 2022 am I still authorized to wear it on my uniform? I don’t want people looking at me strange because I’ve been in the service less than 4 years and haven’t seen combat.
I don't see why you shouldn't wear it. It's fairly over abundant. I got out in 2020, so everyone had it. My foreign "service" was getting rocks thrown at me in Kosovo in 2014 every day. It was both underwhelming and annoying, but I got a bunch of shiny medals for it (Nato Balkans Medal and DANCON medal look very nice). In 2013 it was a pretty big deal not to have a deployment patch and be in for more than 3 years, but less and less people actually have tours and deployments so it's to be expected now.
You would still be authorized to wear it. The changes didn't take effect until 2022. Although I am confused, can we receive the GWOT twice or just once? The Navy has me with 2 on my DD214.

The Korean Defense isn't that uncommon, where you think of the 100's of thousands that have served in Korea.

Good suggestion but at 82 I don't think I will get there...but I may do a general overview sometime ...GREAT suggestion!
Another great one Sir. Thank you!
Your videos are very informative and historically educational. Thank you.

I was awarded this medal in 2001. I went to Afghanistan 2003-04, Iraq 2005-06, Afghanistan 2010-11. Retired 2012. 25 years of service total. 🇺🇸

How about a 10% discount on Vaseline?

Click the like button people ! Unless you don't want this channel to stay on.
Great video! Thanks for sharing it.
To be fair, I often had a hard time explaining to my parents how cleaning the motor pool did its part in fighting Global Terrorism.

You served and did the job you were assigned to do. You don't need to explain anything to anyone.
USMC 00-12 GWOT X4 OIF,OEF If I had ten lives I wouldn't change my service! Semper Fi
My duties during Desert Storm were in Germany where I was performing Counter Terrorist duties.
We didn't have this medal.
I am authorized the GWOT and the Iraq Campaign w/star. I can wear either one. As far as I know (I am long retired) you can only wear one of them.
Yeah I got this when it was first awarded
Outstanding!
Thank you! Cheers!

yep, Marines need to go back to their old ways......no flash and understatement of actions!

And i was just going to order mine this is a bunch of bull what the hell is wrong with these people in DC
Is the flag facing forward on uniforms now that the NDSM ended in 2022?
Now my dress blues look cool. i got two medals you can't get for free anymore
National Defense is only awarded during a time of war, it is not automatic
Was the GWOT awarded to DOD civilians?
Welcome to the DOD crap detail! When service members are reduced to filling slots with no recognition of faithful service. We Cold War veterans know all about this. We were dumped in 1983 by 110,000 with not even a thank you!
I agree. Don't forget to click the like button to help the Colonel out.

Yes. You wear it under the authorization of the time you were awarded.

If I hit the fleet in September do I rate the gwot?
I like your stuff but good God please get a better microphone
got it, I am working on it.
The GWOTSM was a redundant National Defense medal anyways
yes sir!
