    Pacific Islander means that. Thousands of years ago our ancestors migrated to the islands of Polynesia, Micronesia, and Melanesia. From then on and many decades after our peoples traveled to and from each other's islands. We are the people of the Pacific and should be proud of that. Our ancestors conquered the biggest body of water in the world with no modern navigation instruments. Thank you for bringing this injustice to light.

    I'm both Hawaiian and marshallese by blood. I've been stereotyped all my life about being Micronesian. Born in Majuro (Marshall Island) raised in Hawai'i since I was 1 years old. All I know now that Hawai'i and Marshall Islands is suffering over years with the U.S. and their desecration of our lands! Boming Bikini Atoll (Marshall) and Kahoolawe (Hawaii) for what? For their benefit? Their nuclear testing? WE (Pacific Islanders) must comes as one! Stop fighting each other and point the fingers at the ones who are responsible for all this hate! Are we really living in "The land of the free"? Are we really living the "American dream" NO! WE the Natives of the Pacific and the Native Americans are NOT! Yes, there are a lot of Micronesians in Hawai'i give bad reps for the rest. There's always bad apples in EVERY RACE! We're all human beings, not one is perfect!

    Im not even micronesian or polynesian even though many people believe that I am both and more. My first visit to Oahu for vacation, I was misidentified and mistreated very poorly by the locals. I can see how rampant this issue exists. I just look like it and automatically get judged by it. I can't imagine people who are actually micronesian or another islander feeling the racism directly. I actually looked up Micronesian or islander racism to see if what I experienced in Hawaii was rampant. And here we are.

    I lived around Micronesian Peoples in 2018 for one year in Hawaii and to me they are just like any other peoples I seen in the US and other countries! You have the good one and you have the bad one. I seen both sides of Micronesian Peoples and to me they are 50/50% of good & bad. I think most people in Hawaii are seeing the bad side and that's why they are getting a bad name there. I also have good Micronesian Friends who are very good to me and I am good to them. Some I help them to get a job. From what I seen, they are also hard working people. I hope this will help others to just get to know Micronesian People more and you will have a much better understanding of them.

    It is so sad because our problem is so similar to the problem in the continental United States between blacks and whites. The micronesian citizens contributed something of importance to the Hawaiian society. We are the proud Pacific brothers and sisters. "The seas brings us together, they do not separate us." We shared so many things in common.

    Hotel industries and Cleaning companies go to these islands and bring back workers because people in Hawaii do not want to apply for the jobs. Believe me I worked with all of them, and the ads been in the job section for years!
    They make them pay flight, housing, food, medical, and bus so they don’t really make any extra income unless they work 3 jobs.

    This is very true. Here in Hawaii this hatred towards Micronesian has gotten worse. I myself really don't blame some of the complaint they base off their experience with Micronesians, because it is true. But the ones that they just stereo type or hate Micronesian just because what they heard. They doubt all of us just because they know we Micronesia without knowing us I really don't get them. I've face being stereotype so many times but I just ignore it. Want to share 1 really sad experience I faced couple times with same person here on Oahu in the Wahiawa Processing Center for SNAP benefit. I went apply for foodstamp, and of course both my husband and I were working. First thing the worker asked me when she did my interview was, why us Micronesian all we do is depend on foodstamp. I was hurt I just told her, as far as I saw there outside in the lobby they all not Micronesian, there were mix ethnicity. She just roll her eyes and her tone of voice was very rude. Fast forward to few years after sometimes 2019. I went to reapply again, same lady interviewed me. I was 8 months pregnant and still working, she asked me why I didn't I have any income for that previous month. All I told her was I was off island. Her first sentence was " Wow, you have money to go on vacation to Micronesia and you don't have money to buy food"?. All I told her was first of all going back home after 15 years of stuck on this island always working just to bury my dad was not a vacation, it was the most heartbreaking sad travel experience I had, it's not a vacation to go bury my dad" families and friends help donate for our fare. You can never judge a book without reading it at first. I didn't want to complain about her. Because Karma will catch up with her. I know it and believe that. Just like what I wrote in my essay for Heald College, Karma will have its own way, and look at them now. Prayers for all haters 😔

    The problem is we Micronesians have been given the right to live in or around the US but not given the right to vote. In Return we give up our lands & waters to the US for MILITARY use.

  • @marcyulep-souza1302
    @marcyulep-souza1302 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The bombs that were dropped on Japan ending WWII, were from planes that took off from the Marshall Islands. Nuclear testing was done in the MI because it is far away from the mainland US and because the US would never have been able to "get away" with such testing in their own "back yard." This testing has been linked to many medical issues with the Micronesian people. High rates of cancers, kidney failure, and high rates of stillbirth are just some of the medical issues they face. There are no dialysis or chemotherapy facilities in the Marshall islands, forcing people in need of these treatments to either leave their native land, or succumb to these diseases, that the US has, in a nutshell, caused. Yet when they do leave to seek treatments, the US denys them medical coverage. The United Nations entrusted the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) to the US. The US was supposed to develop the social economy, education system, and health system, for the express purpose that one day the MI would be independent. But because of the Military presence and nature of their business, (top secret) the US could/would not let outsiders in to develop these systems. Thus people leave their islands to seek healthcare, education and work.

There's a case to be made that these have contributed as well to the increase of diabetes, obesity, etc

    Hearing stories about USA bombing, nuclear testing, etc on those parts of the islands, is like remembering when I lived in Puerto Rico and “Vieques” was targeted for target practice and all things WAR related equipments. The radiation alone cause so many people cancer and deformations back in the early 1980’s. It was truly heartbreaking when the USA refused to cover the medical expenses and damages to their food crops….until they SUED and WON! But the aftermath of CANCER still circulates among those affected or born from those exposed. Our Island of Puerto Rico did not have the kind of equipment that requires for ongoing treatments, interventions or breakthrough advanced medicines. Many relocated into our islands, but because of the limitations of proper equipment and extensive knowledge in nuclear related radiations, our island wasn’t prepared educationally or financially. Yet it was more because living in Puerto Rico was affordable, a simple life. But understandably, many had to relocate to mainland for those kinds of ongoing care of a condition that cannot truly be cured. So on that note, I understand one of the several topics mentioned. Island people are very different than mainland, we tend to care deeply about the liveable parts of the island and preserving certain areas that defines the whole culture and identity of ONE’s home. Mainlanders tend to shift state to state and even abroad to extend skills and knowledges not found on the mainland. But mostly for economic enrichment (business venues). It is becoming rare to find mainlanders having their generations living in the same state because that essence has become dull/boring. The country life is more colorful because life in its panoramic view expands with its landscapes and animals. The city life, is fast paced, no time for thought, just “DO” mentality. Thank you for your discussion. I apologize for the lengthy comment. Thought I’d share my views and experiences. 💐🫶😇

    1) If you are going to discuss Hawaii, please do your homework on language pronunciation. Personal accent does not excuse poor adaptation.
    2) The young Male Micronesians made a rep for themselves on the Big Island back in the 80's: were prone to group fights, theft, burglary, other petty crimes. Back then, I saw it as a combo of lack of money, opportunities, supervision and social education.
    3) I always share the sprouted coconut from my farm with the Micronesian workers who saw them on the ground and asked for them (they eat them like candy-cake). Good people just sharing the bounty and knowledge of the Aina.

    The social stereotyping here described seems more like a national origin discrimination, rather than racism. While Micronesia is a region, which consists of thousands of islands in the Western Pacific Ocean, the four islands of the 'Federated States of Micronesia' is a sovereign state which has entered into termed agreements with the United States.

    • @uts4448
      @uts4448 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree but It’s not just the Federated States. Palau and the Marshall Islands are in this Compact of Free Association as well. And people like to group us all together like we’re all the same. Trust me. It’s racism. There’s over 20 different groups of Micronesians. We don’t all chew betel nut. Betel nut is not something we all do. Some cultures like the Yapese and Palauans do it. We don’t all depend on welfare. Just like everyone else, we have some who work and some who do depend on welfare. The nuclear bomb testings happened in the Marshall Islands. That’s something that happened to the Marshallese, not all of us. The skirts that they see on women is mostly worn by the Chuukese and Pohnpeians. Not the other Micronesians. You know. But people dont really care to think. It’s just all of us put together with the same ignorant stereotypes.

      I visited the Polynesian Cultural Center on Oahu Island, HI and relished the many flavors of the South Pacific. Although glamorized as an attraction for tourists, the presentation did depict cultural distinctions and celebrated the diversity in the islands. Seems reasonable with the islands being separated, each island people would develop their own distinct art, social orders and customs. For the same reason you mention, I would resist the "person of color" trend ideology being passed through the social media. Clumps everyone together and denies each of their individual orientation and family cultural identity.

      @@SusanDianeHowell i apologize. I know what you mean. I just meant it’s not a national discrimination of just the Federated states of Micronesia. It’s many nations being discriminated as one group. I also understand what you mean about the whole “people of color” thing. That just seems like a way to separate everyone from white people. Which I don’t see why we need to separate ourselves from other people based on the color of their skin. There are good white people. Trust me. I don’t throw the word “racist” at every opportunity. I know when people make racist jokes. Its fine. Its just jokes. But it’s the times when people are upset and say things like we come to Hawaii and spit betel nut everywhere, also cause a lot of crime, and take all the welfare like they really believe in these stereotypes.

    This is a great conversation about discrimination. There is discrimination everywhere due to lack of education, understanding, and communication amongst different ethnicities. Discrimination will never end but we can all do our part in preventing it from getting worse. The media has publicized a number of criminal acts by Micronesians in Hawaii. It leaves the impression that has resulted in the discrimination that is taking place. I've worked, managed, and hired micronesians and it's difficult some times because when some of them get their paycheck, they celebrate and drink more than they should and don't show up for work the next day. Some are great workers when they are at work but will no show no call and you never hear from them again. It's challenging because you give them an opportunity to earn an honest living to provide for a better life and they don't show appreciation. I know there are good people and think more needs to be done to promote this in the media so people will think differently or be more objective.

      @@temarikel8674 you are absolutely right. It’s a tough world so I find I’d rather try to be understanding of others situations rather than making it more difficult for them by judging or anything along those lines.

    Micronesians could aspire to be great Americans if our immigration laws were better.Must speak english,must have proof of employment upon arrival,proof of residence,and absolutely not eligible for entitlements for the first five years.

      So Micronesians can enlist in the military yet you don’t think they should be eligible for entitlements ?
