      It’s funny you said you were on the edge of your seat. When installing the first unit there’s the moment he fires it up and has to go back on the roof to see if the green light is on. That exact moment is when TH-cam felt I needed to see an ad. It made me laugh and groan out loud at the anticipation. The ad was only 5 second long, but it still struck me as funny and gave me that edge of my seat apprehension.

      @@HintonTheTrail I will say, if you have two A/Cs, it only makes sense to get their plug soft start with surge protector for $599. It's cheaper than buying two of these and covers all the A/Cs and doesn't require any of this install on the air conditioners. You just plug it into the outlet, and plug your RV plug into it.

      They’re a little bit different on each model but that’s one of the great things with SoftStartRV. They have install guides for all the models and you can also do the rooftop install assistance where they walk you through it on the phone. It was fantastic having them on the phone to tell me where things were and clarify things if I had questions. Good luck and enjoy the product!!

    I just finished successfully installing Soft Starts on both of my A/C's . I didn't use technical support during the install.. I went to the Soft Start support site to determined the proper wiring diagram. I did contact them to ask about the location of the wiring diagram reference number. Technical support told me to look for a tiny number on the A/C's Coleman wiring diagram that started with the number "1976". As you stated the written instructions were very easy to understand. I have both A/C's operating on 30 Amp now. I did initially trip the circuit breaker because I forgot switch my electric hot water heater to propane. I'm also pretty sure that I still have to practice energy management while on 30 amp and, wouldn't be able to run the microwave or other Hi Amperage items while both A/C's were running. I should be able to run these items if I shut off an A/C while using them. Thanks for the video.

    • @HintonTheTrail
      @HintonTheTrail  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for sharing your experience! Yes, the install is pretty straightforward, they do a great job with the instructions. No, you may still have issues running hi amperage items with both units running, especially in the heat. When we're on 30-amp we turn one off while using the microwave, toaster, hairdryer, etc. Happy Camping!

    Great video. I have purchased a SoftStartRv and am waiting to install. I am wondering, what would be the smallest generator in watts to power a 15,500BTU A/C with the SoftStartRv installed? Any idea?

    • @HintonTheTrail
      @HintonTheTrail  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! That's a great question and I'm not sure if I can answer it exactly. People are running one 15k A/C off of small 2,000 watt generators but I don't know how much smaller you can go. We have the Champion 3,400 dual fuel and it runs both of our with no issues and also allows us to run other things without worry (we ran the coffee machine with both units on and it chugged right along). If it's a size issue then go with something smaller. If it's a cost issue then you need to look across the board. A 2,000 watt Honda will run you about the same as the Champion 3,400. There are cheaper avenues and new generators on the market too.
      Out of curiosity, did you use our SoftStartRV link? We're trying to ensure it's working properly. Thank you-Chris

    • @HintonTheTrail
      @HintonTheTrail  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should be fine with two 13500 units. The time that the power needs spikes is so short the chance of them both hitting at the same time are slim but if they did you should be fine.

    Getting one installed on my trailer, to run off my solar. I have a 19.5 foot trailer with one AC. I’m also adding LifePO4 600ah batteries.. I boon dock only, unless I’m in a family’s yard, so I won’t need a 30 amp plug in, I will just need 110. I want to get rid of my generator, so I’m thinking a portable battery for a backup on a hot day/night.

    As long as they don't have a combined amperage draw of over 30 amps. Mine runs 15.8 during high cool mode. The soft start cusions the 21amp spike as the compressor starts and the capacitor recharges. With two units in operation you better hope nothing else needs power and no one tries to operate the microwave or any decent loads. This from many years of installing these along with thousands of units serviced.

    So what's the trade off with this unit? Obviously there's a downside otherwise they would come with this tech from the factory. I assume slower startup or something

    • @HintonTheTrail
      @HintonTheTrail  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We’ve heard that some companies are looking at doing that. We haven’t noticed a slower startup at all. It turns on and cools just as fast.
      There are a lot of reasons companies don’t do things but a lot of it comes down to money. It would cost more to add these on and then you have to charge more to the RV manufacturers. They in turn may say, why would we pay more?
      We’ve used our A/Cs for almost 4 months now with these installed. Sometimes running them basically non-stop for a week due to heat. They work. We were on a 30-amp hookup for a week and ran them both…along with using appliances and no issues. They just work and we love them!

    Will this void any warranties on your a/c or rv in general?

    • @HintonTheTrail
      @HintonTheTrail  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is direct from SoftStartRV: “Presently, Coleman/Airxcel has yet to weigh in on this, and Dometic RV customer service has told customers that it would void the warranty.”
      I’ve talked with SoftStartRV and they have a 2 year warranty on their product. In their years of business and over thousands and thousands of units sold, they have had one a/c issue. A gentleman swore up and down that the soft start caused an a/c problem. They refunded the money and paid for a new A/C. When the a/c was removed it turned out it had nothing to do with the SoftStart. But they still paid for it.
      We worry about warranty work too but the product is so good it is worth it to us.
      And if you don’t like it you can remove it and put the wiring back the way it was. You don’t cut or splice any wires. It doesn’t change anything mechanically in the unit.

But if you have 2 A/C's, running off 50 amp, this would be just as much as buying 2 soft starts that attach to A/C. It's fantastic! The customer service, tech support, product, all of it. We didn't mention it in the video...but we really feel like the ac runs quieter too. Make sure you use our link...it'll save you some dough! Let us know what you decide to do. -Chris & Suzannah

    Any idea if I ordered two how long they take to ship. We are on the road in our RV.

      They usually ship within a day and arrive pretty quick.

    The digital meter you had in the kitchen to see the volts ? Was that something you bought and if so where?

    • @HintonTheTrail
      @HintonTheTrail  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can get them at a hardware store or on Amazon. It’s a Hughes Digital AC Volt Meter. We’ve had it since day one of RVing so we can see what our voltage is at.

    Hi I recently bought 2 of these soft starts for my 13500 btu acs. What size generator should I use to run both at same time

    • @HintonTheTrail
      @HintonTheTrail  ปีที่แล้ว

      Beyond running the two a/cs you have to think about standard things running like your fridge, lights, etc. Obviously if it’s hot enough for a/c your fridge is going to be running more too. And of course every RV model seems to be a bit different with electrical draw. Regardless, I would stay above 3,500 watts. A lot of people go the route of getting two Honda 2200 generators. You can run them in parallel, their wicked quiet, and because they’re separate they’re easy to move around. You could pull one out and just run basic electrical needs when the weather isn’t hot. I think that gives you a lot more freedom. Honda is expensive though but there are other brands. Champion makes smaller ones, Firman, Generac. There are quite a few options. Good luck and glad you got the SoftStarts. They’re game changers!

      @@HintonTheTrail I only run my acs on power. Fridge run on propane and I never use microwave, I’m just trying to pinpoint exactly what size I need.

    • @HintonTheTrail
      @HintonTheTrail  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jamesgrubb8762 I would recommend a 3500 Watt or the two smaller ones that equal 4,000+ watts. If you go below that the generator could still really struggle to keep up in hot temps.

    Ok what size and type connectors do I need ? I must have missed that .

    • @HintonTheTrail
      @HintonTheTrail  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The SoftStartRV comes with all the connectors now so you shouldn’t have to purchase any. We recommend some electricians tape though.
