We're they meant to be an in-between ball for plastic/early reactive covers or even a prototype hybrid cover? I'm pretty new to bowling (in late 20s but didn't get into the sport until 2022) but the particle cover looks like it wants to react like a pearl.
I remember throwing particle balls roughly 20 years ago and your description is completely different from what I saw. They were very smooth, like a stronger urethane. Particle was the predecessor to the nano coverstocks we have today. Particle balls had tiny jagged "particles" in the coverstock that made the ball grip the lane more. The problem is the jagged edges wore down quickly and the particles would become smooth, severely decreasing the performance of the ball permanently. By the time manufacturers fixed the problem, particle had developed a bad reputation so it was essentially rebranded as nano.
Yeah that was my experience too with the Ebonite XXXcel, which was the only particle ball I ever owned. This man had the wrong ball in his hand. Morich made some horrible pieces especially in the late 90s/early 00s.
I agree with this completely! Particle balls would hook well in heavy oil and remain very smooth but as you said they would wear out fast, and resurfacing made it worse for me
They were never hook monsters they were designed to be heavy rollers and get traction in oil. Very little movement but could still hit. The problem was people were like today it don't move a ton it can't be for oil so then would try on lighter oil and it would hit like marshmellow because it rolled out 10ft down the lane
I remember my Pro Shop driller telling me particle balls with use wear down the studs, i.e. particle down making the ball react more like solid reactive. He said you can rejuvenate the ball by sanding the ball that exposes the particles more again. I had a particle ball back in the day and remember this discussion. I moved on to non-particle shortly after this discussion. The ball you bought that was pre-owned might react more like a non-particle ball on some shots but the inside target balls are telling. Thanks for the video and the intro was fantastic!
as someone who deals with thumb injuries from just bowling in general, but i wanted you to know i really respect how you powered through even with the ripped thumb, that pain is no joke for real and the focus to power through is commendable.
The greatest particle ball and arguably one of the greatest balls ever made - Storm ElNino XiT - had me on pace for a 300 when I was very young until the pin setter chewed it up in half and I was left with a ball split in two. Unstoppable ball on wood lanes.
I was a Pro hop Operator in a house with wood lanes. El Nino Wrath was a great ball, it was Particle Pearl. Had a customer who use a Dyno-Thane Particle pearl, 220 Average, 300's, 800 series, he would have me give it a light sand before every league night and was able to use it a number of years in a row. I had one also. I also had a Brunswick HPD patricle ball. I also had drill some Morich Balls. I think Mr. 220 Ave. Ball the Particle were flattened and just need some sanding.
Some particle balls were great from visionary bowling which is now out of business but my dad was on test staff with them from 2003 from what I remember and the gargoyle balls were awesome. The green and the slate blue gargoyle. The slate blue was a urethane ball and the core was used in the glowing amulet which was a collector's edition ball and was a hard urethane ball .
I have a Storm La Niña partlcle that used to be owned by PBA pro Tommy Delutz. Back then (early 2000s) I thought it was OK. Maybe I should break it out next time i practice.
You should! I still have a particle ball i use sometimes.. But the vid does show what they are like. If you’re not on your game every shot, that over/under will get ya
I used to love particle balls in the early 2000s. The Columbia 300 Icon 300 was my favorite. I still have a Visionary Granite Gargoyle, and Visionary Centaur AMB that are both particle. Very smooth pieces that really bit early and gave you that midlane read when everything else was too clean. Really stopped the violent backends in wood houses too.
I remember back in the 90s I had a ball I didn't have that ball but I had one that was a particle covers doctors made by Columbia 300 it was a complete chaos it was a greenish color ball I don't have it anymore but it was a hit or miss ball
Funnily enough, one of my favorite balls of all time (besides the Columbia 300 Reaction Ricochet and the Brunswick Danger Zone) was actually another particle cover stock ball from Track in the early-mid 2000’s, the Rule GP2. I was a stroker style then and that ball gave me the whole lane on a nightly basis. Still have yet to find a ball that made me feel like I had the whole lane that often.
I have a dynothane element, one of the first particle balls. It’s the best ball I’ve ever used. The call reaction stays the same for a very long period of time and I don’t have to move for 2 games
Can you challenge a manufacturer to make 5 pound candlepin bowling balls, and 8-10 pound duckpin bowling balls? The objective is to train ten pin bowlers in center mass release and less curved more controlled throws.
there were some good particles out there back in the early 2000s. The Danger Zone HP line (HPD and HPH) were good pieces and were pretty popular with players when they came out. The HPH was a particular favourite of mine and if I ever ran across one in good shape I would buy it.
My highest sanctioned game (288) was actually shot with the AMF NightHawk Menace, which IIRC, was a particle ball. I definitely remember it being a pretty off the spot motion.
Lmao! one of the best comedy/intro's in the bowling world Ive seen in awhile, keep them coming, this was right up there with Luke Rosdahl's power rangers intro , lol , great channel
Whenever someone mentions "particle ball", I instantly think of the Ebonite Tombstone. That shit was like sandpaper. I had the El Nino Gold. I think it was Storm's first smelly ball. Everyone called it the Grape. I rolled it pretty well. The lanes at my first house were half wood half synthetic.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s I had a Brunswick Swamp Monster, two Ebonite Apex Adrenalines and a Storm XFactor Trifecta, all of which were particle balls. I thought they were all great balls at the time. I still have two of them that I may have to break out and see how they compare to today’s technology.
Im really not going to lie, this ball looks.. actually pretty good. If you had 1500-2000 grit surface & proper fitment, this ball would actually be killer on a more fitting condition. This ball just suffers from the exact same things any slow symmetrical solid would now a days. The Hammer NU is a pretty close example of this, its fantastic in the track, lackluster when you miss inside, and can be quiet catastrophic when you miss to the dry. Very urethane-y type reaction. I'm very high RPM, so I think I would like it.
Never really had a problem with particle being over/under back in the day. biggest issue is the ball you're throwing has one of the strongest covers ever made, so it's hooking entirely in the midlane then rolling out. a particle pearl is way better for a house shot.
4:24 bro the ball is a whole ball size higher on your second swing than your first. You should try bringing the windmill back into play so you can keep your swing down lol. You're much more consistent when your swing isn't so high above your head.
First of all, Particle coverstocks do not suck. They are still used today in many balls, most notibally balls by Radical such as Informer and Spy and many others by brands such as Brunswick. If you look under a jeweler's loop at the Purple Hammer coverstock you can see it also uses this technology but on a microscopic level. I have one of the most rare Particle balls ever made and I think a cooler name than your Weapon of Mass Bias, I have the "Midnight Scorcher Particle Urethane." Here is how they describe it and I can tell you from personal experience this is exactly true and is completely the opposite you what you said about particle balls: "As oil carries down to the bowler's break point area, there is little effect on the ball because the difference between the ball's reaction on oil and dry is much smaller than with any other ball. This allows the bowler to make fewer moves to adjust to the changing lane conditions and often lets the player have more of an opportunity to play a shot closer to what they prefer instead of always being forced to play what the lanes dictate." If you are interested in learning more about the Scorcher and particle technology I interviewed Jason Wonders, the creator of the ball. The fourth post down has the interview: www.ballreviews.com/visionary-134/scorcher/15/?PHPSESSID=ua0pbeh7vnienlenr0143ad873 If you would like to see the Scorcher in action you can watch Video #53 on my channel. If you want to see how easily it handles heavy oil compared to a resin ball and purple hammer watch video #81.
I remember all those videos u did about arm swing and how u wanted to keep it shoulder height at most …. Oops lol… imma chicken wing bowler so I’m allowed to make fun of others lol
The reason it being better maybe you can get your thumb out of the ball quicker or you are slowing down and getting the ball in more than away from your body...a bad habit of mine
If this isn’t the best intro to a bowling video ever you can slap me irl
🤫🧏♂️
Holy intro !!! love the vid as always !!🔥🔥🔥
I love it man
Well done 😁
Despite my deep seated desire to slap you senseless, I can not on this basis. Well done sir, you win this round. 😂
Where are ya 😂😂
Pro shop operator here, fun fact, particle covers never went anywhere, they just stopped advertising them, and they got a lot better
We're they meant to be an in-between ball for plastic/early reactive covers or even a prototype hybrid cover? I'm pretty new to bowling (in late 20s but didn't get into the sport until 2022) but the particle cover looks like it wants to react like a pearl.
yeah they are just called nano now
@@attackonzach No, particle was meant for the heaviest of oil
Yep. The og gem was particle.
And the optimum idol

Thank you! Historically accurate information! Oh, and can we take a moment for a little Mo Rich reverence?
Yeah that was my experience too with the Ebonite XXXcel, which was the only particle ball I ever owned. This man had the wrong ball in his hand. Morich made some horrible pieces especially in the late 90s/early 00s.

This ball just looks terrible😂 it hits so soft even when he throws a good shot. Should just leave it on the return for some little kid to throw😂😂
@@paul_omalley yep, once the particles wore out the ball was DONE. Resurfacing wouldn't help.
They were never hook monsters they were designed to be heavy rollers and get traction in oil. Very little movement but could still hit. I bet you that backflip swing in the intro took a single attempt
The swing hit his…
This is the editing I can stand behind. Masterpiece.
as someone who deals with thumb injuries from just bowling in general, but i wanted you to know i really respect how you powered through even with the ripped thumb, that pain is no joke for real and the focus to power through is commendable.
The “hey fellas” mid swing got me laughing

the intros are getting crazier😂😂
I had the Ebonite Matrix TPS 2 (TPS stood for Textured Particle System) which was made in 2000. I thought it was great.
I have a Storm La Niña partlcle that used to be owned by PBA pro Tommy Delutz. Back then (early 2000s) I thought it was OK. Maybe I should break it out next time i practice.

That intro was SIIIIIIICK!!!
The fact that the acting was terrible made the intro even better
That light 4 pin is the exact leave I had on my first 299 game.
The weapon of mass bias was one of Mo's GOATS.
I love when a new bowling video comes out on one of my bowling days!
The editing is on point brother!
Came for the intro, stayed for the bowling

That miss left bucket/miss right big 4 look is what I get in league with my actual equipment.
That intro is better than anything i’ve ever created in my life.
😂
I have a bw legend that is supposed to be reactive but ngl it does damn near the same exact thing when it sees oil, or rotation
I had two or three phenom unleashed, loved em. Also liked my power diesel while it had life.

The ball I want to see you tried to get next is the epx as far as I know this is the only bowling ball that was made from epoxy resin
I have a dynothane element, one of the first particle balls. It’s the best ball I’ve ever used. The call reaction stays the same for a very long period of time and I don’t have to move for 2 games
intro editing was clean and funny, good stuff bro 😄
Can you challenge a manufacturer to make 5 pound candlepin bowling balls, and 8-10 pound duckpin bowling balls? The objective is to train ten pin bowlers in center mass release and less curved more controlled throws.
Intros are reminding me of old AVGN videos. Love it.
I can’t count the amount of times I would break my neck attempting that open 😂😂😂 great vid as always
Did not expect to see my obscure bowling ball pop up on your channel. Nice. Love this ball.
there were some good particles out there back in the early 2000s. The Danger Zone HP line (HPD and HPH) were good pieces and were pretty popular with players when they came out. The HPH was a particular favourite of mine and if I ever ran across one in good shape I would buy it.

That intro was something else 🔥
This opening is your best! So awesome!
I had a Weapon of Mass Bias. Loved that ball. Our team called it The Battleship and it hit like a bomb.
I have the jolt partical by storm its a great ball for longer patterns i like it and is really controllable
I threw my 1st 300 with a partical ball. It was the Storm X-Factor, Ace. It was a pretty sweet ball when I had it. It's 20 years old now
I threw back-to-back 300's with a storm X Factor Ace
As I recall, they used scuff pads to bring the surface back. No resurfacing.
Lmao! one of the best comedy/intro's in the bowling world Ive seen in awhile, keep them coming, this was right up there with Luke Rosdahl's power rangers intro , lol , great channel
Since you live out in Cali., could you do reviews on some SWAG balls? Are you endorsed by anyone?
Whenever someone mentions "particle ball", I instantly think of the Ebonite Tombstone. That shit was like sandpaper.
I had the El Nino Gold. I think it was Storm's first smelly ball. Everyone called it the Grape. I rolled it pretty well. The lanes at my first house were half wood half synthetic.
His editing is amazing
I liked teh Lane#1 Super Carbide Bomb a lot back in the day :) I know my old proshop guy didn't like resurfacing the covers.
had an ebonite tombstone, tossed a 299 with it, eventualy it seemed to just get worn out, not all that much different than everything else.
i had a storm fear factor. it was a partical ball. thing was a beast. got my first santioned 300 with it during my junior years.
Best intro ever
I had a ball with mica particle cover. Couldn't tell you the name of it though
Had that ball, loved it. Smooth as butter.
Is that ball drilled for a left hander? Cg looks left of the grip. If the mass bias is on the left side of the grip its going to kill the reaction.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s I had a Brunswick Swamp Monster, two Ebonite Apex Adrenalines and a Storm XFactor Trifecta, all of which were particle balls. That is a strong Asym. The mass bias or intermediate differ is roughly .023 which is insane. I actually have one.
Editing goes crazy !!
Never really had a problem with particle being over/under back in the day. biggest issue is the ball you're throwing has one of the strongest covers ever made, so it's hooking entirely in the midlane then rolling out. a particle pearl is way better for a house shot.
Would love to see how this rolls if it was drilled for your hand
I bought a particle ball back in the 1990's and it didn't even last a season. The cover was so soft that it scratched and chipped apart.
I see you have the storm soccer ball and golf ball. I have seen recently the baseball, the basketball and the football for sale on eBay and mercari.
8:23 Sage advice 🙏
4:24 bro the ball is a whole ball size higher on your second swing than your first. You should try bringing the windmill back into play so you can keep your swing down lol. You're much more consistent when your swing isn't so high above your head.
That intro is awesome
What an absolute flex with the editing skills
I had that ball and loved it. I knew a guy that had a total shock and awe that just killed with it.
That intro made me hit the sub.
Well. At least the mail guy didn’t crash your car this time
Mail truck obviously ate too many burritos!

Brunswick and their subsidiaries blow, SPI ftw
The intros are top-notch
My favourite ball is still a particle coverstock ball the Hammer Big Blue Pearl
Goes longer and snaps harder than anything made today
you should do a two handed review on this ball
Note to 220 “ don’t miss in “
I think it gets overlooked how good you are with the 1000 different spans and grips you use in these videos lol
Why no windmill style?
Wait hahahaha yooo how high did you chuck that ball to make it look like it fell from the sky LMAOOOOOO This was gold
I remember all those videos u did about arm swing and how u wanted to keep it shoulder height at most …. Oops lol… imma chicken wing bowler so I’m allowed to make fun of others lol
Do you think bowling with all these different balls? It’s hurting your regular game asking for a friend
First off fire intro like always! Secondly you should really do 3 games so we can see what series you get
Bowled my 2nd 300 with my chaos tech
Total anihilation was a monster
220 angry are you okay? Are you feeling alright
bro 34 seconds after post, im so speedy quick
🏆 a new winner for the first comment trophy
Bro almost blew an ACL on that intro 😂
The reason it being better maybe you can get your thumb out of the ball quicker or you are slowing down and getting the ball in more than away from your body...a bad habit of mine
How's that dismount lol
Cool video talk tech bowling ball open bowling 2 games Michael
J.R. Raymond lookalike
@bmac6679 yes he is
Try throwing it two-handed!! That'd be sweet to see!
Partical just destroys the lanes partical was just traction in oil.
Bowl like Ernie McCracken in kingpin
Many years ago the four nations lived in peace
Haha the guy is the bass pro hat seemed like a real one
Mailcat coming in HOT.
The ball sucks or those square pants sunglasses …? lol
wait he was actually in a LLV 😂
But the Hammer 4d🤤🤤🤤such a sweet particle ball
Should’ve tossed it with two hands
Plug it and drill it for you and use it in league. Can't be any worse. USPS rules.
kool man
