    This is such a necessary study.
    It flips the tables on prosperity gospel and “name it and claim it” culture.
    It even runs head long into apologetics defense of the problem of evil.
    This is good.

    I believe "vanity" is related to "vain", as in "It was all in vain". It means 'pointless', or 'may as well not have happened'. Also, I think the closest word we have, in English, to the concept of "hevel" is "vapid". It is actually derived from the same source as "vapor" and similarly means 'unsubstantial' or 'offering no substance". I love Ecclesiastes.

      Myst. For « Hevel », maybe a translation to the word « myst » would be fitting, also as in « mystery » . So, capturing both meanings of « smoke » and « absurd ». What do you think?

  • @moneyhooligan03
    @moneyhooligan03 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    If all good & bad are hevel/smoke or vapor in this existence then it really highlights faith, gratitude, & temperance. Cool juxtaposition of how the material world can be a super real hallucination & how the spiritual is much more real than we often believe it to be.

    Vanity = self absorption = absurdity/futility... Maybe if we think of ourselves as vessels made by the potter & we are full of ourselves than we're actually empty & to attempt to learn anything turns out to be meaningless or absurd.

    • @cuebj
      @cuebj ปีที่แล้ว

      May, or may not be, a valid point on its own. But irrelevant to this topic. HVL is not 'vanity' as so many English translations have it. Maybe, back in 1600 CE England, 'vanity' had a meaning like 'smoke', 'vapour', etc. If so, its meaning has changed.

    I believe the author is simply saying hevel, hevel, because everything we do as human beings is temporary. From simple survival, all the way up to entertainment and power struggles amongst ourselves, is going to fade away and be replaced by the next person who wants to control "their" world. God has the ultimate say on everything and following his ways is as close as we will ever get to true fulfillment in this flesh.

    I love The Bible Project. I also love the book you all sent me a few years ago. God is sovereign, I have many experiences that brought me to a point of complete humility. My daughter was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in October, she is 18. She is getting better but when faced with this, my first thought was , what did I do wrong? My question was misguided, then I began focusing on who God is and his reality, and my relationship with him, and looked at my life , the faith of my daughter and her courage that God gave her , brought me to my knees, so God is good , even when we have these hard moments.

    The reference to smoke, vanity, etc are talking about ‘fixed definitions’. The wisdom books are talking about establishing context rather than simply applying formulas or fixed definitions. Human experiences are like smoke, the appearance can be one thing but the internal meaning can be multiple things.

    It seems like a literal translation would best retain all the allegorical implications of the original word.
    "Smoke, smoke, everything is smoke - merely chasing the wind."
    Smoke also suggests pollution and occlusion of the solid things underneath. It gets in your eyes and makes it hard to breathe, like the uncomfortable observations of the Teacher. The suffering of the good and the success of the evil are a lot like a nasty cloud of poison smoke in that way.

    I love this wisdom series. So much ❤. However I do think that the teacher does sometimes mean life is meaningless because, an example being Ecc 4:1-3 ‘I saw the tears of the oppressed-
    and they have no comforter;
    power was on the side of their oppressors-
    and they have no comforter.
    2 And I declared that the dead,
    who had already died,
    are happier than the living,
    who are still alive.
    3 But better than both
    is the one who has never been born,
    who has not seen the evil
    that is done under the sun.’

    I’m not sure I’ve ever heard anyone lump in Elihu with the other 3 friends. It wasn’t a bet either. It was a test, but more of a recorded example for the rest of us.
    “Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.”
    ‭‭James‬ ‭5‬:‭11‬ ‭

    The reference to Song of Songs regarding authorship is good. I tend to say the title could be any one of four: A song consisting of songs about Solomon; A song consisting of songs by Solomon; The best song about Solomon; The best song by Solomon. Then I plump for 'Solomon! The Musical', which equates to the first of my four options. It gets people's attention.
    There's a tendency to think of Solomon starting well but going bad. Read carefully, the text shows disapproval pretty much from the start

    I’m wondering if all is hevel because in the beginning we weren’t meant to do this in the first place? We were suppose to rule with God in the garden. That’s why it’s never going to be worth much except like a testing ground where we choose God over materialism that gets burned in judgement anyway. It’s like a tragic story where we blew it in the garden and we’re all trying to save ourselves because that’s what we chose in the garden but it will never be lasting or workout because that wasn’t the original plan but God says , well okay , this is what you guys chose but it will end up being hevel . But you still have a soul and I will save you so all is not lost.

But honestly, I would just translate it Vapor. Smoke, Everything is vapor and smoke. Then just put a footnote down.

      And plus….The record states:
      “Who can say, ‘I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin’?
      ‘Surely there is no righteous man on earth who does good and never sins.’ ‘Everything else Solomon did while he was king is written in the records of Nathan the prophet, Ahijah the prophet from Shiloh, and Iddo the prophet who wrote about Jeroboam son of Nebat.”
      ‭‭2 Chronicles‬ ‭9‬:‭29‬ ‭CEV‬‬
      Just like Jesus: ‘If every one of them [every act or words] were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.
      “When your people sin against you - and there is no one who does not sin - and in your anger you let their enemies defeat them and take them as prisoners to some other land, even if that land is far away, listen to your people's prayers. If there in that land they repent and pray to you, confessing how sinful and wicked they have been, hear their prayers, O LORD.”

    It concerns me that they categorize other "religions" with true Christianity. "Religions" that worship idols, that elevate sinful humans and try to make them equal too the Lord, too the Holy Trinity. That pray to the spirits of men & women in the heavenly realm, in place of the the Most High God, through His Son, Christ Jesus. Jesus the Christ, who is the ONLY mediator between God and man. Catholicism is not Christianity. This is not directly related to this video, but in general to comments from the podcast. We as Christians should be praying for those deceived bye Catholicism and sharing the true Gospel with them.
