    love the way the voice-over/background music echoes the documentary style of the time!

      The music was the Thunder Birds Theme song... adapted as documentary stock music... "The Cham Cham"

    As a kid, I worked out that the under water scenes had to be done behind a tank of water and fish. It just looked like it too, but that never spoilt it. Loved every bit of the Thunderbirds!

    Those explosions and associated sound effects are still incredible.. Derek Meddings and his crew had me absorbed as a kid watching this.

    Let me just pick my jaw up from off the floor! Now THIS is the way Thunderbirds should be done, and no CGI.

    This looks (and sounds!) so wonderful, so much better than the crappy ITV reboot which has way too much CGI. This is analog 60's bliss, it has a heart and soul. Thank you so much for doing this.

      Bla Bla do you know only the vehicles and characters are cgi and the set and some vehicles are models so I think the reboot is better than you think

      @@Garbageguitarist Aye. It's also reaching back to the old show instead of separating itself from it. The nephews love it... although I had to explain and show them the original Mole and Firefiy and they agree those two are the best pod vehicles in terms of power... but they liked the variable pods as they can turn into whatever you need...
      Shame we never got to see the original Firefly in the new show. It's the one gripe I have, but a minor one.

    • @Mcfreddo

      @@Garbageguitarist No it is NOT. No one wants cgi bs. They didn't even focus upon why the original was loved, nor understand it. It was observing the explosions and crashes, for they cut from that before it's completed and focus only on the character's soap opera. Boring!

    • @Mcfreddo

      That reboot was a peter Jackson thing done in Wellington nz. Sure, the voice acting probably recorded in england, but hell, it WAS atrocious.

      Thunderbirds are go looked like it was animated. Rhey should have left Alan and TinTin in the cast. I need to look for the complete series, Prime is missing the last season.

    Supermarionation beats CGI any day of the week.
    The love and attention to detail every person within the company put into creating Thunderbirds is easily seen, unlike the modern Thunderbirds CGI rip offs.

      The vehicles and environments in the new "Thunderbirds Are Go" series are actually completely made with miniatures. _Only_ the characters are CG.

    • @Garbageguitarist
      @Garbageguitarist 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nyerguds yeah and that’s nice but this part of the tb community I hate look on the bright side it introduces our generation to thunderbirds which is why I love the new show

    • @LogiForce86
      @LogiForce86 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Garbageguitarist Why can't someone come up with their own new series? Why do they have to be bad remakes of the old?
      In my opinion every generation should have their own hero's and their own things to fill their dreams.
      Sometimes you just need to appreciate the old stuff for what it is, but let it rest otherwise. Like good whine.
      Every generation has their things. I am 34 years old now and Thunderbirds was basically my father's youth who is now 60 years old.
      As much as it pains me but it's time to move on. Where I was looked at my parents or grandparents like them being nagging old sods of in the past everything was better, I now became one.
      At the end of the day... you only live once and in your youth you still can still live freely with the worries taken away by your parents, so make it a jolly good one and make it your own because it is your life. Seek your hero's and dream your dreams and let your generation develop its own identity.
      Joe Cocker, a singer that has already passed away, once had a song about it called Noubliez Jamais. In it he sings about how every generation should have its way. Maybe it will be inspiring or maybe it is just one of those oldies that should be buried with the old folks like me. 😉

    I'm 63 and watching Thunderbirds all over again on ITV X. I don't care how dated it looks, when the intro starts and Geoff Tracey is doing his countdown, 54321 to Thunderbirds are Go, the music starts thunder crashes, it takes me back to the sixties as a child. Nostalgiia aside its still a great programme. Hated the digital remake a few years ago, what a load of tosh that was.

    EVERYTHING about this mini documentary oozes early-to-mid 60s Britain in the best way possible in a way that many who attempt the same look end up failing at, from the saturated picture to the analog-sounding voice over! Just how did you get the latter part sounding so realistic?

    • @stephenlariviere
      @stephenlariviere  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You mean the sound quality? Or the person doing the voice over?

    • @KKAkuoku
      @KKAkuoku 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oops, I meant the sound quality of the voice over. I've been trying to achieve that effect in programs like Audacity and it just doesn't create the same result.

    • @KKAkuoku
      @KKAkuoku 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      stephenlariviere I've also looked into recording it via 3 head analog cassette and then transferring it back to digital. Was this the technique that your team used?
      Also, can you go into the technique used to replicate skin tones at 1:39 to 1:45, please? Can it be done using Adobe, perhaps?

      KK Akuoku Glad you're digging this! We did all the post-production on the featurette (as well as on the documentary itself) digitally. The audio was distorted and EQ'd to mimic a lower fidelity recording, and the picture was graded to approximate '60s film stock. The process to grade the puppets, especially Lady Penelope, was a real pain and involved grading each part of the picture separately using animated vector masks and colour keying when possible. The entire post workflow went through Adobe After Effects, which amazingly handled the two hour film (in bits, mind you).

    • @KKAkuoku
      @KKAkuoku 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely inspiring to know that the visual side of the end product was all done in AE. That means I can pretty much achieve the same level of color detail shown.
      But what program did you use to distort the sound, Justin?

    I loved Thunderbirds and all the other fantastic series the Anderson's created. As for the voice-over ... ugh .. what a sneering, patronising PUT ON accent those 'BBC types' used to assume. The Beeb has always been patronising.

    • @imfsresidentotaku9699
      @imfsresidentotaku9699 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Any generalization as broad and cynical as that is highly questionable. The voice-over is meant to imitate documentary voice-over from the 60's. There's no need to say "ugh." If that sounds like "a sneering, patronising PUT ON accent," you must be taking it too personally. Eloquent =/= patronising.
