    Sonic Unleashed is a banger game that's why there's music and footage from it in there
    Today I take a look at why Steam (made by Valve, creators of Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Portal, Portal 2, and Half Life: Alyx) is better than other launchers that are considered "competition". These other launchers are Epic Games (the launcher you need to run Fortnite, and also where you can go to access the Unreal Engine), Origin (A launcher made by EA games, a publisher known as the "villain" of the gaming community, even though the studios under their wings, like Respawn Entertainment, have created games like Titanfall 2 and Apex Legends), Uplay, which is now rebranded to Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net (The launcher used to play Call of Duty Warzone, Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War, Overwatch, and World of Warcraft) and finally the Rockstar Games Launcher (known for making critically acclaimed games like GTA 5, sometimes spelled GTA V, GTA San Andreas, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Bully). Sadly the Minecraft 1.16 launcher didn't make it into the video, as I didn't deem it worth talking about. I'm honestly hoping my next video is about something like Minecraft, or maybe even Among Us, or I could dive into the lore behind the Dream SMP, and take closer looks at the personas created by Dream, Ranboo, TommyInnit, Sapnap, GeorgeNotFound, and BadBoyHalo.

    I think right now steam is like Netflix in the early days, it was the only real streaming platform and because of that it had a lot of shows and movies and everything you could want to watch on it. But then other services like Disney+ came along and took back their movies so you could only watch it on their service and then everyone else did the same.
    I hope the same thing wont happen with PC games because having exclusive titles on 50 different services would just be really annoying.

      True but the I think there is a key difference. The amount of money it takes to make a game that a ton of people want to play is way less for a video game that it is for a movie . It’s way easier to get an indie hit in the video game space than it is to movies. And since steam is the dominant platform all of the games will be released on it. Also another key difference is that most games are not restricted to one platform and can be sold everywhere.

    A big problem with changing launchers (and by extension, creating competition for steam) is the fact that all your friends are on steam too, so if you wanted to move you'd need to find a way to drag all your friends with you; and for what? An occasional free game on epic that they have to offer because nobody will use their platform if they don't? The average consumer either doesn't care about what launcher they use enough to bother changing or further still actively likes steam because all their friends are on it and they have a good reputation going back decades.

    • @Person01234
      @Person01234 ปีที่แล้ว

      If someone makes a better launcher this happens naturally. The same is true of instant messaging yet we saw the downfall of every IM service microsoft bought and ruined, now discord is the dominant IM software.
      You can have more than one launcher installed at a time, you can talk to your friends on one and buy games on another. Steam isn't perfect but it has staying power because it's life goal isn't to fuck over the consumer. They focus on making a working, feature rich launcher and give you good games at good prices. When they start to neglect the launcher or add a bunch of small changes that everyone hates, it will die, the way MSN and Skype did.
      Edit: Oh, by the way, this expectation everyone has of this transition happening immediately is moronic and leads to people justifying the shit epic was trying to pull. Yeah, your launcher is going to have to start out basic and you'll have a small userbase but over time you can grow. Epic didn't have to become the new steam within a year, yet the excuse for their egregiously anti-competitive anti-consumer behaviour was " how else will they compete with steam".

It's kind of a mess, but yes, the difference between display name and username is something almost no other platform gets right, Discord does it pretty well and then several others like Xbox have just copied that #xxxx system, but the fact that discord even needs the tag to be unique is redundant with their snowflakes that are constant behind the scenes.

    Steam simply has a vision and keeps following it: to offer a platform for gaming that helps creating communities around games and is up to the latest trends (the late 2000's forum-style communities? Check. Early 2010's modding boom? They have built a workshop were every game can be opened to modding. Late 2010's gaming streams? They have a streaming service on their platform. Early 2020's VR? They're working on it.)
    Valve hasn't made the perfect, community oriented, game selling platform from day 1. It has built a platform over the years adapting it to what gaming was at the time.
    The other launchers either lack a look at the gaming community (Epic Store, that as the game suggests is just a store) or lack vision entirely being only a way to push games from a publisher (origin, uplay and rockstar).
    Gog has some community features, but like the games it sells, it has a very primitive outlook on them.
    If anyone wants to be a competitor to steam, rather than be just an online store for games it has to adapt around what is the most modern medium for the gaming world. The current state of competition shows instead how the industry can survive offering products without a vision as long as they have a big name behind them.

    Steam is superior because it's more like a social media platform for gaming while the other launchers are just launchers with a few extra features.
    I find it funny how much money Epic are spending to try and compete with Steam when they don't even have user profiles, someone added me randomly one time and there was no way for me to see who it is or why they added me, with steam a simple look at someone's profile is enough to determine if it's someone you know, a friend of a friend or some scammer trying to steal your cs:go knives. It's such a basic feature it's insane they don't have it.

      @@sinistan1002 I think you underestimate just how much revenue Steam generates, they take a 30% cut on literally every single transaction made on their platform, and that is ALLOT of money when you factor in the community market, not to mention that after every single market transaction, even after the 30% cut, all the money involved stays on steam in user wallets, where it will be spent on steam anyways.
      Literally any amount of money you put on the platform, 30% of it is already theirs no matter what you do with it. (except for refunds when you buy a game with a card)

    I think the most underrated thing about steam is the layout for a game's store page. Everything is so compact and well laid out - the screenshots and trailers dont take up the entire screen, because there's a decent chance that you already have seen them before and arent important. To get to the recommended specs i only need to scroll 3 times instead of 5 like on epic games and i don't need to go through achievements and social media links that i dont care about, because both are on the side at the bottom. Having seen developer commentary on valve games, i imagine as much attention went into designing the store page.

    I love the profiles on steam and the achievements. The only other launcher I use is gog since I can put all games that arent on steam into an own launcher so that I have to spent as few time possible on other launchers. Its also really cool to track your playtime of games like Minecraft, Genshin and League, since they dont do it themselves.

That is good thing :) I would love to have all games on just one platform but I also believe that steam does not need that big of a cut of money I pay for the game.... Devs deserve more money from it... right now u give like 30% to steam and another 30% to taxes... how can devs have lesser half of money from stuff they worked on for Years...

    If I don't find free game interesting I just wouldn't bother to registrate in EGS and downloading game but if I do like the game that is free I will rather wait for Steam sale and buy it thus giving some money to the devs of a game I like and having the game on nice and cool Seam library

I only use origin because I have to in order to play Jedi Fallen Order but otherwise, Steam is the best and my default game launcher. So easy, user friendly, customer service is good and the sales🤩 Plus, they are a truly private company with a long history of actually supporting gamers and that makes me trust them more than I will ever trust the others

    People complain about steam being a monopoly, but heres the thing, sometimes monopoloes exist because one producer offers a service SUBSTANTIALLY superior to the competition, i believe this is the case with steam
    That being said, i like GoG galaxy, i hope the release of steam deck encourages them to develop a linux version hopefully you will be able to play most of the gog library through proton

    • @SuperTime2Change
      @SuperTime2Change 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Valve didn't build anything groundbreaking from the ground up. All Proton is, is a forked version of Wine tailored to make games more compatible out of box. I do agree that more companies need to adopt and support gaming on Linux. Competition is needed to stimulate the stagnant state of the video game industry. With Windows popularity and ecosystem declining, Linux has become the go to for many gamers. Myself included.

The Septic launcher is literally only good for fortshite and free games, if you think free games is worth having that trash launcher on your computer, which I don't.
