  • Let's explore the lore of the High Wills and how the themes within this personification of a deity seemingly draw similarities from the Gnostics and their concept of the Demiurge.
    In this video I’d like to posit that the primary themes within the game, mainly focusing on the High Wills and the concept of heresy, and how it draws from mythologies going back to the very first Christians - even predating the Catholics. The question I’d like to ask here is then: is BLASPHEMOUS a Gnostic allegory?

    Hell of video, absolutely loved it. Discussions like this prove what a great piece of art Blasphemous is

    Interesting analysis. This game has the most unique artistic paintings (art), surreal yet not looking cheap like some games. An unforgettable game. I wasn’t expecting a not so expensive and simple looking game could be so amazing. Yeah I enjoyed other similar games like this but none stayed in my mind like Blasphemous and not sure why. It’s just very very unforgettable.

      Exactly, there is a depth to this game that any other game just doesn't reach. I think it has something to do with it's mystique and spiritual mysticism - that the themes are all familiar yet different enough to be uniquely compelling. That's why I consider it to be High Art, as there's something about it that resonates with you long after you've played through it

    Hoping for a Blasphemous 2 followup, because I think the game's endings 100% reinforce this reading of the story as Gnostic allegory.

      Wow! I haven't finished B2 yet (about 70% complete) but if that's the case I will absolutely make a follow-up video. Thanks for the heads up!

    Super interesting man. Maybe it's possible to expand on the theory, and link it to more things in-game. The game is so thick with symbology I think there should be more parallels if the theory holds up.

    Even though I don’t know very much about Gnosticism, everything you say makes sense to me. I’m also glad that i came across this video and channel. Definitely I will dig that topic. We need more analysis of Blasphemous on a little deeper, philosophical and religious ground on youtube. Your narration and voice also do the job - awesome video. I will definitely stay on this channel as i love the other gaming content too (have to watch Hitman videos as alongside Blasphemous these are my favourite games). Keep up the good job!

    I’ll have to watch this after I beat the game, though I agree with you the art direction and music are amazing. For how much I played I get most of the story, though I’d rather prefer not to see spoilers.

    The way i've always interpreted Blasphemous (i'm not good with fancy words when I analyse arts so it may read a bit dryer than my actual feelings. This game is in my top 5 of all time) : it's a critique of the Catholic Church around Inquisition time and a love letter to the city of Sevilla.
    The clergy transforming into monsters to me is just so easy to compare, I grew up Catholic and was always near either modern stuff that I find morally wrong or more ancient stuff like the inquisition which I always find wrong to say the least.
    It's all so well written and presented in a manner that has been seen before but nobody ever made it feel so cohesive and the Sevilla flavour in there makes it so unique when it comes to visuals and lore.
    Your video and way of explaining your vision is much sexier than mine by the way, great video!

    Question: who is the strongest? Is it the Penitent one of the brotherhood of silence, or Crisanta of the wrapped agony?
    If you had to do an analysis?

    • @Mordrukk666
      @Mordrukk666  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Interesting question. I think they each represent the masculine and feminine aspect (similar to the Gnostic "Aeons"), so their strength would essentially be equal. Crisanta is blind and the Penitent One is mute - so there's some additional symbolism there as well, but both of them were required to defeat the High Wills, as neither could do it alone.
      Symbolically I'd say they're equals, but because the Penitent One is the protagonist of the story, he's granted capabilities beyond Crisanta to serve various narrative purposes.
