+Roman Darius Wow. There needs to be a prevalence of all minorities and even all religions, including Asians; Native Americans, Latinos, and multiethnic people. But "boo...hoo...black people"? Seriously? Someone could have easily commented 'boo...hoo... Asian people'. ALL must be recognized.
I'm in LOVE with Viola Davis. She's so eloquent and good with words. Her message is always transmitted effectively. A magnificent actress. I think HTGAWM has given her the chance to showcase talents people didn't knew she had. Gotta love empowering women. Thank you Variety!
I didn't mention the word racism once. That was you. You have the right to disagree with my perception. I'm just expressing my point of view, which is based on her as a person and not the ethnicity to which she belongs to. Sometimes people compliment each other, you know, out of the kindness of their hearts. It's not all about being politically correct. My appreciation for her is genuine. If you are not wowed... good for you. Have a nice day
I must say I'm not crazy about Viola Davis in HTGAWM. It's more the writing than her acting ability. I find the writing overly dramatic and don't get the fascination with her shows. Ugh. As for Viola Davis. I've seen her on stage, in movies and on television. She has something that truly stands out. Like Meryl Streep, Viola seems to become the character she's playing. She is THAT good. At least I think she is.
+daniel stanwyck I couldn't believe that when she said it and she said it so effortlessly. She seems like she's found a really good place in her life. Her spirit seems so peaceful whereas it used to seem so nervous, like that of Barbra Streisand. Go Jane.
If Viola Davis was a motivational speaker, i would immediately attend her masterclasses... Also, i love the part at 05:04 where Jane gets emotional just by hearing Viola speaking of her character.
@Penelope416 I think they heavily edited this interview; it was probably a 30 min to 1 hr interview where they edited it down to the bits they liked best. To me it seemed liked they edited out Jane Fonda's emotional reaction. It definitely seemed to me like she was getting teary eyed.
These ladies have presence. It's so powerful and they know that they are powerful that's why they don't need to be loud or animated. Stately and elegant. I loved watching this!
Love Jane and Viola so much. And when Viola spoke about sexual abuse and how we hold that inside, in a small part of ourselves in order to function and survive, it brought tears to my eyes. It’s such an honest, accurate, correct statement of the adult aftermath of having been sexually abused. It spoke to me so profoundly, a women who was sexually abused as a child, of how it never leaves you even when you have come to terms and moved past it, and come out on the other side. The loss of innocence, the feeling of betrayal and fear, the changing of how you trust others, the feeling of low self worth and shame stay with you. Even when you’re grown, they’re still there in that small locked compartment deep inside yourself. Even as your higher, adult reasoning self fights to erase those feelings with self affirmation, assurances to trust others, and embracing self love and combatting shame. Despite that, There is always a small part of you that knows the abuse changed who you would have been had it not happened. That you will always mark your life by who you were before the abuse and who you became after. But there is hope. And although the scar will still remain, There is a way to heal. And you do that by continuing to be the best self you can be, and being aware of who you are striving to be, and consistently surrounding yourself with kind, loving and trustworthy people, then giving them kindness, love and your trust in return. In doing so there is a feeling of taking back you power, of owning who you are and moving past victim hood to not only survivor, but a thriver in life. Viola was spot on that it is something that stays with you. But although the abuse will always be a part of your life experience, YOU DON’T HAVE TO ALLOW IT TO WIELD POWER OVER YOU, BECAUSE IT DOES NOT MAKE UP EVERYTHING YOU ARE. IT DOES NOT EQUAL THE SUM OF YOUR WORTH. AND IN TAKING YOUR POWER BACK, YOU STRIP THE MEMORY OF THE ABUSE AND THE ABUSER OF ITS POWER OVER YOU. THEN THE ABUSER DOES NOT WIN. YOU DO ❤️hugs and love to all the survivors and thrivers. You are not alone and you are worthy 👍
Thank you for sharing ❤️ I am very proud of you. It’s not easy to do that. To any man, woman, or whatever you identify as who has ever been through this. I want you to know that you don’t have to feel ashamed or embarrassed. There people who want to help you and see you at your best. It’s always okay to get help :) The fact that your still here is a blessing! Much love ❤️
I love Jane, I am happy I got to watch a documentary about her before I knew ANYTHING about her. I'm 27, she is the same age as my grandmother. Viola is a gift. I have read her book recently. I have no words. On the outside I see a bold, beautiful, envious woman who has it all - but on the inside she is just like me and her struggles are relatable.
Love these two woman! Such amazing strong actors....each holding their own, and not being afraid to stand tall and shine. They have actual talent vs most of the "look-the-type" actors we have now.
Ugh! Such beautiful -- yet brief -- discussions of the craft! These clips are my new TH-cam addiction! I LOVE hearing actors simply discuss the artistry of acting! This was such an intelligent pairing! I loved listening to what both women had to say about their work.
Jane Fonda a true ICON and I love her in Grace and Frankie. She is great! Viola Davis, love her in her role How to Get Away with Murder. Glued to the TV. I love her in The Help and others.
Viola Davis is such a beautiful woman! Gorgeous! Why would they put so much make up on her face? Her head looks like it belongs on a different body! I love her and it annoys me that someone thinks she's not beautiful enough to let her use and least make up possible!
I agree. But I also took into consideration that sometimes a person of Viola's hue, makeup artists on those sets are either unprepared (don't have makeup to match her skin tone) or they don't know how to apply makeup (blend) to her skin tone. You'll often hear women (especially models) of Viola's hue complain about making appearances/going to events where the venue hires makeup artists who don't have diverse kits.
Fonda looks and sounds remarkable for a woman who is 77 years old; she appears about 47. Whether this is attributable to plastic surgery, good genes, or a combination of the above, she could unquestionably play a romantic lead in a film today, and I just read that she is slated to have a film reunion with Robert Redford in a Netflix or Amazon produced movie.
They are both such an inspiration, it's beyond words, not to mention beautiful women. I got to say though I absolutely love the Actors on Actors, those are such intelligent and enjoyable conversations. Great idea.
What a lovely rapport they have; I've admired Jane for so long; and now Viola is becoming the state of the art, if she's not already. Thanks for this conversation, ladies!
Viola is not just a great actress. She is a valuable teacher of art and life, even if she just talks about average things. She makes average, important. She makes my brain and sowl "rich"!
GREAT VIDEO!! great set! The design of it was PERFECT. The lighting was a little dark. but, both of you were just STUNNING and so intelligent. Thank you
Both these ladies are gorgeous, talented, and intelligent. Jane is an icon. Viola exudes such warmth. I just want to hang out with them and bask in their creativity and wisdom. Why wasn't this 1 hour long?!!
These women are simply exceptional. Plain talk. I was not focused on the make-up or wigs or clothes or set. I was listening to the stories. I am a black Caribbean man and I am fascinated by Jane Fonda as a person. She is an incredible individual NOT woman but individual who happens to be a woman. The individual is bigger than the gender. Her life is based on equality and using her privilege to change the world for the better. Folks read life story and look at her interviews. I love her as much as I love Dolly Parton. Viola is the epiphany of perfection. Brilliant Actor fantastic storyteller. Every word is laced with emotion, feeling and is so touching. Two fantastic individuals.
Ms. Jane Fonda, I have loved you since I was 5 yrs old!!! U are the Queen of fitness and b/c of U, my body and health at 40 is incredible!!! Ms. Viola Davis, Ur Beauty, Grace, Ethics, Strength, etc etc etc... lol. When I was taken Intensive Acting I studied U like a hawk. 2 women I truly respect and admire. Thank U both so much!!!❤
Jane Fonda looks so great for being in her 70s. I also love Viola Davis so incredibly talented and so opened. So glad they are both together discussing TV shows. So glad they're on TV as well as in the movies.
What a great concept this Actors on Actors web series. I'll make sure not to forget it was sponsored by The Authograph Collection hotels. By the way, I'd like to suggest an episode with The Divine Miss M and Barbra Streisand.
I really can't wait for season 2 of Grace and Frankie, I've never seen How to Get Away with Murder but I love Viola Davis whenever I have seen her this was an awesome interview!
Since the beginning of time when humans gathered around the fire to hear the Storytellers speak of their hopes, fears and history, I want to be one of those, the simple Storyteller. That is what makes me an actor and that is what I'm drawn to in others. I'm enamored with a good Storyteller and these are two of the finest!
... I know i found this late, just today. Thank you! A big thanks from a girl/woman not important - but who really is? Deepest respect & love to both of you, Jane and Viola.
The more women talk about the fact there are no "good roles" for women, I am so grateful that women like Reese Witherspoon take the plunge and create production companies of their own to create great roles for women. For example, the movie Wild which was incredible. I think it's time more women did that.
Both are very intelligent women. I hear Fonda's autobiography is great. But Viola is such a force. I could listen to her all day. Both beautiful women and not just looks but personality. Viola's skin is stunning.
When Viola speaks, she speaks with such precision that it cuts right through to the viewer. She's truly extraordinary.
+Jacob Flores Absolutely jacob she does....
+Jacob Flores ----------------------She should cry that there are not enough Asian actors ! Not just cry for her boo...hoo....black people.
+blahew I'm pretty sure +Roman Darius belongs to the KKK.
+Roman Darius you're just a racist piece of shit
I wish Viola Davis would read books for audio tapes.... could listen to her voice for hours
+SproutAndTheBeann Me too, her voice is so soothing.
Totally! i never thought about it but yes. i would listen to her like u said for hours!
Egot!! Egot!!
Well you can now. Audible has her book narrated by her! :)
I'm in LOVE with Viola Davis. She's so eloquent and good with words. Her message is always transmitted effectively. A magnificent actress. I think HTGAWM has given her the chance to showcase talents people didn't knew she had. Gotta love empowering women. Thank you Variety!
+Vivian Russo ---------------Oh, stop crying racism ! She is not that great
I didn't mention the word racism once. That was you. You have the right to disagree with my perception. +Roman Darius Your comment doesn't even make sense. WTH is wrong with you?
+Vivian Russo you handled that very maturely.
I must say I'm not crazy about Viola Davis in HTGAWM. It's more the writing than her acting ability. I find the writing overly dramatic and don't get the fascination with her shows. Ugh. Wow, highly intelligent women having a real conversation...I hope younger actress are watching and learning what elegance and class looks like.
+cross cultures ----------------Learn to stop crying racism!
+Roman Darius The only person mentioning 'racism' is you.
Are you bored?
+cross cultures Men should try it sometimes.
Yessss
Jane Fonda at 77 (could that possibly be??) is exquisite, still, after all these years.
+daniel stanwyck I couldn't believe that when she said it and she said it so effortlessly. She seems like she's found a really good place in her life. Her spirit seems so peaceful whereas it used to seem so nervous, like that of Barbra Streisand. Go Jane.
Jane Fonda and Viola Davis - both inspirations. SO admire their work.
If Viola Davis was a motivational speaker, i would immediately attend her masterclasses... Also, i love the part at 05:04 where Jane gets emotional just by hearing Viola speaking of her character.
Really? I thought she was covering her face for some other reason because she looked completely unbothered the next second after.
@Penelope416 I think they heavily edited this interview; it was probably a 30 min to 1 hr interview where they edited it down to the bits they liked best. To me it seemed liked they edited out Jane Fonda's emotional reaction. It definitely seemed to me like she was getting teary eyed.
I thought she was laughing
Agree... Jane´s reaction... Perfection. They are perfect!
I wish this would have been longer !..what a powerful conversation. Especially Viola. She needs more recognition !!!!
Take what ya can get
This is fascinating. So much respect for these actresses.
Poignant, beautiful, classy, talented women. I feel blessed listening to them.
These ladies have presence. It's so powerful and they know that they are powerful that's why they don't need to be loud or animated. Stately and elegant. I loved watching this!
Jane Fonda is one good looking 77 year old woman.
Vincent Williams
Umm yes but it's not natural as you must be able to tell..she has talked about plastic surgery she has gotten publicly sir
@@simulationdisruptor6033 you are evil. Try to find out why.
@@Prince_the_One lol what? For repeating her own words about her plastic surgery? 🤣
@@Prince_the_One did you think I was talking about viola davis or something?
viola is an incredible talker, just watching and listening to her speak is poetic

Two of my favorite actresses of all time. I LOVE JANE FONDA AND VIOLA DAVIS. Can't believe that they interview each other. How wonderful.

Totally gorgeous and talented women!
Jane Fonda and Viola Davis are two beautiful, remarkable, powerful women! They are outstanding in everything! I could listen to them all day.
I can’t say how much I love the “hue” of Viola in so many ways. Both of these women have more than proved themselves as artists and human beings.
Two intelligent, talented and beautiful women having a good conversation. I like it!
Wow! Intelligent discussion! Especially by Viola. I can't imagine either woman going in like that with any other actor/actress.

Loved this conversation between two of my favorite actresses.
Beautiful both...but Viola really shines...love from Greece...
Viola has the most beautiful skin. I wish her foundation matched.
I thought the same
Who ever did both of their make ups, really fucked up.
Renegade Red I think it's possibly related to their being a lack of products for dark skin.
Renegade Red I said it too then I saw your comment
I was looking at that the whole time even Jane is orange
Lord have mercy, Viola is GORGEOUS in this interview! Love these two women!

Jane Fonda rocks! S2 of Grace and Frankie is streaks ahead of S1 and Ms Fonda is sensational in it.
Incredibly inspirational.
