It works great. I’m not sure how far away, but it’s been great for me.

The two different antennas are designed for two different frequency ranges. The short antenna is designed for 800 Mhz frequencies which is where most Digital Police transmissions transmit. The longer antenna is for lower frequency 118-174 mhz where aircraft and older Police departments transmit. It makes no difference whether a transmission is Digital or Analog it only matters if it is at a lower or higher frequency. Also the word Antenna is pronounced An-TEN-na not An-TAN-na. Sorry to pick on you.

Just a note. They NOW have anTANas for the 436 and SDS100. The Diamond SRH77CA pops right on with no adaptor needed its for all frequencies but best on low frequencies 120-440 its 15" long though. Super long! Its $25. The Remtronix 820S needs no adapter and its best for 800/900 its only 8" long and $40. The remteonix 843S is also an option it ls triband but ive nevwr tried that one.

What kind of external speaker should I get?

I’ve never looked into them. I use the built in speaker when inside and I use my truck speakers when in the vehicle.

Wilson Electronics all metal external speaker is the best external speaker, it is a current day "knock off" of the old Motorola Motrac, Motran, Mocom 70 - Cop car speaker . Works good for scanners, CB radio and ham radio.

What bnc connection do I need. Female to female or male to female? Can you suggest a link plz

This is a good link for putting a BNC connector on a BCD436HP unit. The unit cokes with a SMA connection. So this is SMA to BNC.
