She has this thing (that you also noticed) where her background vocals are flowing around her lead vocals, which makes it sound like they're all part of one big lead vocal and in Have You Ever those background vocals are really strong. Another big ballad of hers is Brokenhearted, that one's featuring Wanya from Boyz II Men.
I would also recommend checking out Borderline by Brandy I have never heard a song like it, it's one of her more recent songs and her vocal dexterity is crazy!

I do prefer like you said Monica's voice, a bit more classic (gospel power voice). Both have maintained their pipes while they are in their early 40's, about 25 yrs from when that song came out in the late 90"s
