I gotta say, I LOVE your channel..Not only do you explain everything so well where anyone can understand it but you make affordable options where anyone can build a great commander deck which can be tough at times..Thank you for all your work!
Mitch I was just about to make my hapatra deck and now you've once again inspired me even more. Thanks for this video and keep up the excellent content.
So I understand the need to up the budget from $25 to $50, but you can very much see the impact that slight uptick in budget can have on card options. This is an absolute monster of a deck, I have also learned of several cards I need to add to my own personal Hapatra. Also, it's important to note that with Flourishing Defenses and Nest of Scarabs, you get a trigger for each counter placed on creatures, so it is slightly different from Hapatra's ability, which gives one trigger no matter how many counters are placed on a single creature.
Love the new budget and the videos! Imo one of the best magic TH-cam channels. Extreamly educational and help with deck building. I don't really ever copy decks but get inspiration from your videos. Picked up hapatra for 50 cents and making a commander with it.
I've had a Hapatra deck for a long time now and keep changing it. It's lovely to play, but there were some really good includes in the video that I'll try out. What is also nice as a massive finisher is End-Raze Forerunners and/or Beastmaster Ascension. Of course, Craterhoof Behemoth would be better still, but since that'd blow the entire budget in one go, I doubt it's that much better...
There’s gotta be an itch once in a while where you want to build a deck without budget restrictions, it doesn’t mean you build with only expensive cards, but surely there’s a commander you love in particular that you love a particular build you love. Your formatting of 10 tactics would be sweet to see on a deck that’s a labor of love. I submit to you a new potential series: Budget Non-Cents where you present a deck you love where budget isn’t factored, though could be encouraged. Perhaps it’s for decks that you return to (perhaps a different build?) Or whatever Non-cents means to you. Love the content, and thank you for your transparency.
It’s so great that you do this, I don’t even usually build the decks you showcase but I usually try to use the base pieces you always you (bauble). I know you have helped people at my lgs play with a lower budget than mine so thanks for that!!
This is the coolest deck so far. I love how this channel leads me to commanders I never thought off and cards I wasn’t familiar with. I’m gonna definitely build this and tweak it to my play style.
Pretty much me when ever someone mentions gisa and geralf (because I just loved zombies) one of my first self made decks and was surprisingly so combo hard I got targeted at my table every time we played.
I just built this deck a couple days ago. A great budget include? Viridian Longbow. For every 3-mana you spend, you can equip the bow to a deathtouch snake and snipe enemies. If you have multiple snakes, they can switch the bow with one another to snipe again.
Very fun to see some of the combos I've discovered myself included as points of synergy rather than the real focus. You don't have to go infinite to win. I would be happy if I played the deck, and I got to destroy all of my opponent's indestructible creatures.
I ended up making this same exact deck except with Muldrotha at the helm for some added color, versatility, and resilience! There's actually quite a few good blue cards that work with -1/-1 counters! Leech Bonder + Paradise Mantle/Song of Freyalise is another infinite proc for Hapatra/Nest of Scarabs/Flourishing Defenses!
Viridian longbow is the mvp in my hapatra deck. Always funny to see the gears turning and clicking over when your opponents realize that you have 10 deathtouch snakes and can move the longbow to each one to keep the board clear.
Snu Snu It’s because it’s one of the few equipment that pings but the creature itself does the damage. If you look up Atemsis decks you’ll be able to find some more, I think there’s 6 total.
No love for Archfiend of Ifnir? I mean yes you have to discard cards to get his effect, but being able to choose when to spread -1/-1 counters to all creatures our opponents control seems pretty huge.
nice deck! i love hapatra! the idea of building an army of snakes with deathtouch to bite everyone is so great!! i changed though some things, i put in beastmaster ascension and put out throne of geth, also i put in darksteel plates cause of indestructible and put out liliana influence. dont know if that was right thing to do but for i feel like it was.
Hapatra has always been one of my favorite commanders. Another great value engine is the combo of Archfiend of Ifnir and Undead Gladiator which allows you to do a one-sided Black Sun Zenith while filtering your hand.
This is a deck I run, and using obscure cards like Blowfly Infestation and Nest of Scarabs to dominate the game is so much fun. Great video, keep up the good work!
Obscure is not quite the phrasing Imhad in mind for an almost $4 uncommon that is good in a select few decks. Narrow, focused, perhaps essential? Only the budget jump could fit this in before Reasonable Upgrades like it was for Scorpion God
I run a pretty similar deck to this. One thing I think is a no brainer to include is Dimir Machinations as a cheap tutor for Blowfly. As long as your running a 3 mana transmute and a throne of geth, might as well add a Glissa too
Thanks to the budget increase it looks like the decks can hold their own alot better and can even have a combo or two in them for some fun. I'm soo excited to order this deck!
Love the episodes and also I built about a $300 version of this deck about a year ago and goes bonkers when things get rolling especially when you have about 30 snakes then drop a Natural Order into Craterhoof Behemoth. It kinda ends games quickly. But keep up the good work.
Could there be some place for Yawgmoth, Thran Physician in that Hapatra deck as he can put minus counters on any creature, that and he can proliferate?
OMG! I can't believe I have a Generous Patron collecting dust and I didn't realized it triggers with -1/-1 counters, it's going straight to the deck. A pet card of mine for a Hapatra deck is Gaze of Pain, low cost, cheap as dirt and it works better than they ever intended with deathtouching snakes in a multiplayer game.
This is one of my first commander decks, and it's great. Some card you might consider: Yawgmoth, Thran Physician. This is an amazing engine and does everything your deck wants. Grim Poppet. It's disgusting with proliferate and gives you a lot of snakes. Triumph of the Hordes. This is an I win card most of the time. Viridian Longbow. Slap this on a snake and you have repeatable spot removal. It's also budget friendly.
I always wonder while watching your dechtechs how much removal/board wipes your playgroup plays. Granted I play on a higher budget for most of my decks (100-ish dollars), but I had a Hapatra deck for a long time (a year or so) and it never worked. Trust me I really tried to make it work and went through a lot of versions. Usually, I was either stuck with a hand full of cards that didn't do anything without my commander or played a bunch of good cards and had little use for her. The main problem was the fact that as soon as I became a threat my opponents used their removal to keep me off my general. I even tried similar strat to what you do (playing cards to protect my commander - Golgari Charm, Heroic Intervention, Boots...), but that ended up also being bad since I then didn't have enough cards to advance my board state. Is this something you encounter or is your group just lighter on removal then my is?
I have a similar deck built around Hapatra that I dubbed "The Negative One" since I'm a huge Slipknot fan. There's some differences, but one of the more surprising omissions that I noticed was Parallel Lives. I know it's a little costly, but it's almost too good to not include it.
I really like the raise in budget, since it allows a limited number of cards like Skullclamp to get used in decks like this, where it just supercharges things.
You know I made a Hapatra Commander deck back when she first came out. So I got a lot of those cards that are for upgrades when they were much cheaper like Crumbling Ashes and Necroskitter.
I commend you with this commander pick. Can't go wrong with tokens! Also, I'm so happy Wizards finished the talismans, all the more options for budget ramp!
My Hapatra deck is easily my favorite of all the decks I use, but mine is stupid expensive lol. Budget Commander is arguably more fun though, it was cool to see this deck from that perspective.

Another reasonable upgrade is Yawgmoth, Thran Physician. You can sacrifice a Snake, draw a card, and put a -1/-1 counter on another creature. With a drain effect like Blood Artist or Falkenrath Noble, this lets you draw a ton of cards and wipe your opponents boards! Plus, he can proliferate as well, creating even more Snake tokens. Interesting deck, I would have dipped more into the infect and wither side of things myself but the combo potential on this is definitely nice.
Great deck Mitch. Would Syr Konrad be a good addition?
