Grew up in Watkinsville, went to UGA and saw the evolution of everything. A sleepy southern town by day that could transform your mind instantly if you just happened to walk into the right club at the right moment. Gonna move back there when I retire.
Athens was an absolutely amazing world when I was going to Paul Scales’ 40 Watt at 16. I was reviewing the local music scene in the very late 70’s-early 80’s for my school paper. Fast forward and I moved back in the early 90’s and was sickened by the yuppie arty fart phonies that were essentially permitted to take over. They say you can’t go home again.
these new artists don't seem to have the dirty, drug addicted, analog, compelling sense of artistry that was here in the 80's and 90's. It's just like everything else; popularity turned the town into a place where mostly rich, trust fund, pseudo intellectual weenies congregate and try to be cool by being an 'Athens band'. Hey kids, stop trying to be cool, stop being instagram-able, stop taking showers every day and for goodness sakes stop making music just so you can have the photos and the cred. If you have a plan B, then you are too privileged to participate in the world of art where there is no plan B. It's either success or homelessness, prison, and insanity. If you are not that committed, then get a job at your Dad's firm, ok.

One of the nicest places I've ever been to. If I were given a chance to live there, I wouldn't think twice!
