I appreciate so much that you let us see the entirety of the alteration with no fast forward clips. Makes it so much easier to try and learn how to do this myself 😊
When you're undoing the seam, instead of putting the pointy, sharp end inside the seam so slide down, use the end with the red blob on it. It's there specifically for this job - it prevents the point from slicing into the fabric and allows you to rip through several stitiches at a time. :)
That topstitching is a chain stitch. I've never yet had to pick out stitch by stitch. I always pin the belt loop onto the waistband, away from where I'm working. I hate to go looking for it.
I had no idea I was taking a master class when I started this tutorial, wow! This is the most comprehensive waist alteration I've seen on TH-cam. I messed up the rear seam about 20 times, and almost threw my machine out the window, but I kept on. Lots of self doubt, broken threads and poor measurements, yet I couldn't stop. Towards the end it all started coming together and it felt like magic. My rear seam is nothing like the demo (how does she do that), and things are mostly straight, but I gave one of my old favorite shorts a new life, and I'm really proud of my work :) I learned so much, and it was great practice. Thanks so much for the help!
Thank you so much for the kind words! The rear seam magic is alllll about the iron, youre really heating and molding it into place before the final topstitching. Great job for sticking with it!!
I loved this video! I've been sewing 35 yrs. Never a class. All self taught. Always wondering if Im doin it right! LolI feel SO confident i knowing that Ive always been a wonderful seamstress!! Thank u! What machine do u use? I need new one & need ideas.
Just came across your tutorial. Thank you. You're an angel. My husband has cancer and has lost a lot of weight. Especially from his butt 😄 bless him. I followed your tutorial and managed to make his jeans fit much better. I am very grateful. Wonderful, easy to follow, professional tutorial. Thank you again. ❤❤
OMG I did it!!!!! Well, I did it with you! After very frustrating attempts before (with other tutorials), I swore I'd never take in a jeans waist again. But as I type I'm sitting comfortably in perfectly altered skinny jeans! Onto the next ill-fitting pair with renewed confidence. YOU ARE AWESOME!!
I have seen several tutorials on how to do this, and yours is by far my FAVORITE!!!!!! So easy to understand and I love how you go into detail through every single step. Thank you !
I am extremely impressed with your patience during the video. As someone else said “this really was a master class” in alterations. I like the way you showed everything you did. You didn’t start something and then stop the video and show the results. Where there was a small area that didn’t match exactly but you showed how to correct it and everyone learned that we can all make little mistakes but we can fix them too. In sewing, I’ve found that patience is one of the biggest asset to have in learning to see. I have been sewing since I was in 7th grade when you had to take Home Economics and learned to see. I was anxious to learn because my mother made all our dresses for my sister and I when we were small. Yes I’m old enough to have worn dresses made of chicken feed sacks and they were beautiful. My mother was an excellent seamstress and made not only our clothes but her own as well. Never change how you do your video’s because they are the best I’ve ever seen. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. ❤😘😘
Yes, that is what I just did... I used a thrifted pair that were too big in my butt and took the butt in with this method and it is pretty darn good. You need top stitching jean thread though bc it's thicker and will look best in the end. I am going out to buy some later so I can go back over the stitches I have in place for now.
It's pure pleasure to watch a professional do a beautiful alteration, while explaining every step in such detail. Your confidence and patience are inspiring. I'm going to look for your other videos. Thank you!
Great video from start to finish. I LOL when you tilted your head to virtually fit the pixelated sunglasses. In fact you ticked all the boxes, even having the sewing machine in the background in your piece-to-camera. Excellent film-making 👏👏👏
Hands down the best how to and most professinal looking finsih. I will be following this, this afternoon to fix a bunch of jeans that don't fit at the waist. So wish TH-cam allowed you to add pictures so you could see - just how useful the tutorial is!
Thank you so much, I’ve tried for years to do this and now maybe, just maybe, I can do it. Your instructions were so understanding and clear, once again thank you! 🥰🥰
This is one of the best tutorials I have ever used. I looked at other tutorials for taking in a waist band, but none had the clear video and very clear verbal instructions that your does. I love it! I was able to take in my jeans waistband on the first try! And the finished product looks so fantastic. I have a very small waist and new pants always gap at my waist. In the past I have brought clothes to a tailor to fix this. But never again!! You have saved me money and upped my confidence in sewing skills. Keep up the good work!
I am so glad to see this. I thought I would have to recreate the flat fell seam, I never thought of serging the raw edge and then just imitating the look of a flat fell seam. My alteration chore will be easier than I thought! On some of my pants, a feature I really prefer is having two belt loops at the back waist, just to each side of the center seam. It holds the belt in place much better than just one center back belt loop, and is much easier to attach the belt loops without being on top of the center seam. If there is extra fabric from raising the hem, I will make an extra belt loop and sew the pair beside the center back seam.
Love this video. Your instructions as you sew and taking time to explain each stitch and cut is superb. This is such a professional alteration Thank you so much for sharing.
Using a hammer to flatten those heavy seams before stitching will help with the sewing. Also I double my thread, lengthen the stitch length to better match the look of manufacturer stitches.
Using a hammer on my sewing machine will help with my frustration of not being capable of learning to sew haha. And I'm not an interent baby. I actually take classes, as in, drive the car even in snowstorms all the way downtown, park, walk 4 stories up to some warehouse space where actual classes with humans are taking place. You know, the ones you can touch? And I STILL can't learn sewing. I've mastered much more complicated classes like Belly Dancing. But sewing, nope
If you steam the thick seam you can take a pair of pliers and squeeeeeeeze it! I put a cloth on top of the fabric to reduce the impressions from the pliers. The hammer works but pliers apply pressure on the inside and the outside at the same time.
Simply use a so-called midwife (sewing machine accessory) or even easier and make it yourself, a piece of folded cardboard... when sewing thick layers of fabric and hems, you place it directly behind the sewing foot, sew slowly and allow the part to slide forward so far that until the thick spot is overcome.
Fantastic tutorial, excellent tutorial! You make me realize why paying a good tailor is so worth it when the job overwhelms me or I don't have the time. Thanks so much for providing this very valuable learning experience!
Great tutorial! One thing I would mention about denim though...please pre-wash your jeans before having fitting and alterations done. New denim tends to shrink quite a bit on the first washing and altering before a wash and dry could leave you with a too small garment after it's eventually washed. I always tell clients to wash and dry the Jean's first to take care of the initial shrinkage.
Also on a side note if you wash them hot, dry them, wash hot again, then mostly dry them and wear them, they will sometimes shrink to fit you perfectly 👀
This video is making me want to try a waist alterations on jeans again! I've tried 2-3 times in the past, using previous videos, and was super disappointed with the process and results. Thank you for showing that bit where it wasn't perfectly flat on your first try!!
This is fantastic! Thank you! None of these videos show the alteration with the seam not there. In my mind I was doing it like this, yet I was intimidating myself. I didn’t want to damage the man’s slacks.
I'm so glad I found your channel! I'm finally really trying to learn to sew. I feel like I've found my best resource. Your voice really lends itself to teaching by the way- great work!
Wow! This was a very professional presentation! Your sewing techniques were extremely well done! This is a great tutorial for anyone that wants to also do a great job on their alterations!!
thank you sooooo much! my handcrafting teacher was always delighted to let me know, than i was the most untalented student that ever entered her classroom. with your help i was able to take in the waist of my Jeans! you healed my trauma, god bless you
Well now, isn't this my lucky day! Just scrolling youtube I came across this video. I have recently lost 20kg and my denims need taking in. Thank you for a very informative tutorial. Your calm voice makes me want to jump right in. 🌹🐝🇿🇦
very useful content. excellent construction and presentation of video. excellent grammar and diction. excellent camera shots. the best overall sewing you tube production i have viewed, and i have been watching all winter.
Very great tutorial! I’m inexperienced at tailoring and garment sewing but my jeans turned out very nice. I don’t have a serger and so I just used a zigzag stitch for that part. I also had to trim out some excess fabric in the waistbands at the end and flatten the seams down with a hammer, but that worked just fine. I didn’t have the high expectation of actually wearing these jeans afterwards due to the learning curve but am pleased to say I very much can wear them. They fit my waist perfectly now and they look darn cute!! Thank you for your clear instructions. I’m so happy to have found your videos.
Thank you! I have a pair of pants that I want to take in at the waist, and I was trying to imagine how I would do this. Learning that you cut 6" down from the waist (or halfway down the pocket) helps me understand how you can make it look more natural by angling down. It's also helpful to see how you merge with the seam that is doubled over near the seat.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I need to do this to nearly all of my jeans. For me, if the waist fits, it too small in the butt, and vice versa. Thank you!!!
Explicit verbal technique/instructions and your sewing straight lines look Excellent, job well done! Kudos to you! I had learned to alter my jeans 3 years ago from watching a video from a guy that used the same technique. Again, your jeans well done inside and outside! Thank you!
just wanted to thank you for the extremely clear video on shortening suit jacket sleeves. Most of my customer who need this are men. On non-working buttons, this works perfectly. Working buttonholes I prefer to shorten from the shoulder if there is enough room in the bicep area. Your instructions are so clear and I really appreciate the time you took to make the video. I am definitely subscribing!
Although, the technique of blending gradually will always look nice, as the daughter of an old time tailor and a seamstress, I'd like to share that the way my parents got the angle of how far to take in was always measured on the client, as some clients are more rounded than others and the angle will not always be exactly the same.
I'm excited to see this video bc it is crazy, crazy helpful! And, I hope you are aware of your gift for instruction. Not everyone is able to convey with clarity as you do. Thank you for posting this. I cannot wait to attempt my next waist alteration on my own! 🙃 (I Hope I'm this excited when I'm knee deep in it at my sewing machine.) 😂
I just stumbled on your channel and I love your voice. I love how calm you are and methodical and I especially love that you don't have annoying music playing in the background. Thank you so much I have subscribed to your channel.
I have seen many sewing videos but this one is by far the best as she takes you through slowly step by step so you can learn by actually watching and altering at the same time! Good job!
I've done this many times, but never with a real knowledge of HOW to make it smooth and almost impossible to see. I've always counted on wearing a shirt out over the waist to hide the rough alteration! Thank you for this professional tutorial. I loved watching your hands (so beautifully manicured!) and listening to your voice (so positive) and learning the correct way to take in a pair of pants at the waist. LOVELY!!!!!
The red ball on the seam ripper should be pointed down into the seam when you’re ripping it and it’ll slide right through it and it won’t cut the fabric not sure if you were aware of that
thank you so much for your awesome explanation for everything! I enjoyed how you even told us what to do if there's a pucker. I appreciate your camera angles so much since I am a very visual person. I can't wait to give this another go!
Our videoagrapher will be so proud to hear you say that, he worked so hard on this particular video to make it really easy to see all the intricate little details! Thank you so much for your kind comments!
I'm a diy beginner type sewer. Basics. I needed to take up my sons shorts. On mine, I would have just thrown a dart in somewhere and not worried about a wrinkle. But he's picky. THANK YOU!! I watched numerous videos until I found yours. By far the most patient and detailed instructing. My only issue is there is only one side to the waist band. The back fabric is the other waist band. (If that makes any sense.) But I'm guessing the same technique will work. Just a bit different. At worst, I'll buy him a new pair. Lol. But he has 5. Weight loss. Your wonderful❣️ I will check out other videos too.
I appreciated the manner in which you explained each step . I have never tailored anything, just did home garment construction , and repairs . Many repairs on denim, as we lived on our farm , and husband and two sons were rough on work clothes . They never wore those clothes in school , so just work Jeans needed repairs . Thankfully the daughter never needed repairs ! What size machine needle did you use ? I use a Singer . One son lives with his family on the farm , and I do the repairs on his work pants . I caught myself clenching my teeth , so obviously my brain remembers repairs” back in the day “ ! Thank you !
here's a tip on how to correctly use the seam ripper with the red ball: "What is the red ball for on a seam ripper? The red ball is meant to go down towards the inside of your project. The ball protects the fabric and allows you to smoothly slide the seam ripper through the stitches. If you place the pointed edge down towards the fabric it can get caught and rip the fabric. The sharp edge should go up and away from the fabric. Jan 6, 2021
Mluch appreciated for the video. I just took in my jeans legs but the waist I knew took more detail in taking in. Now can finish off my jeans properly! Thank you!
I can’t thank you enough. My daughter came home today with vintage jeans that needed this adjustment. Followed your really helpful explanation and I have achieved an entirely professional finish! So happy. Thank you x
Your voice is so easy to listen to and understand. You never sound condescending- just helpful.
I agree, she’s my favourite seamstress to listen to. She sounds lovely.
I appreciate so much that you let us see the entirety of the alteration with no fast forward clips. Makes it so much easier to try and learn how to do this myself 😊
😊

Thank you. I did not know that that was the red blobs purpose!
I was just thinking this too.
That topstitching is a chain stitch. I've never yet had to pick out stitch by stitch. I always pin the belt loop onto the waistband, away from where I'm working. I hate to go looking for it.
Thank you for describing this. I just learned after decades what that red button was for 😅
I had no idea I was taking a master class when I started this tutorial, wow! This is the most comprehensive waist alteration I've seen on TH-cam.

This is a very useful video. Very professional method to alter pants from the Waist.
Don’t listen to it I’ve altered for years. This is a sad, sad way to do it.
genuinely better than my fashion school demos I can't believe how well this is explained and filmed. thank you :)
That’s extremely thoughtful, I really appreciate it!
I was thinking the same thing! I even said out it loud as I watched it alone!🤩

There is no accounting for an amazing sewing machine to make the job so enjoyable. 🇨🇦

Great video! I love the sound the machine makes and your voice is so kind. As if Bob Ross had a tailoring TH-cam channel. Thank you❤️
Agree
I have seen several tutorials on how to do this, and yours is by far my FAVORITE!!!!!!
So easy to understand and I love how you go into detail through every single step.

Thank you for talking thru the tutorial rather than just showing a picture and steps :) very helpful! Thanks!!!

Wow this is amazing . thanks so much
I think I just discovered a new way to unwind and relax . Your professionalism and calm voice is a game changer . Thank you .
This is incredible! I want to go buy a second- hand cheap jean to practice this!

Always wondered how to do this, especially lately. Getting older, shrinking, limited budget, need to take in garmets. Thanks so much.

I am so glad I found you. I am a seamstress but you have taught me many new things. Thank you for doing videos.
Wow; you demonstrated and explained the process so clearly with such a pleasant cadence - impeccable presentation!
Thank-you
Must add it is a wonderfully comprehensive sewing video.
Thank you so much, I’ve tried for years to do this and now maybe, just maybe, I can do it. Your instructions were so understanding and clear, once again thank you! 🥰🥰
Exactly what I was looking for. Professional sewing and an amazing tutorial. You can see and understand every detail of it. Perfect!
The best video I´ve ever seen about trousers adjustment in the waist!! Thank you so much!

Thank you!
GREAT video!!!
You are an excellent teacher!!!
Bravo!!!
❤
Love this video. Your instructions as you sew and taking time to explain each stitch and cut is superb. This is such a professional alteration Thank you so much for sharing.
Using a hammer to flatten those heavy seams before stitching will help with the sewing. Also I double my thread, lengthen the stitch length to better match the look of manufacturer stitches.
I do that too v
@@egrs78please don't touch the humans
definitely a super video. Clear images, even clearer commentary. THANK YOU!!
Fantastic tutorial, excellent tutorial! You make me realize why paying a good tailor is so worth it when the job overwhelms me or I don't have the time. Thanks so much for providing this very valuable learning experience!
What a great tutorial! As someone mentioned already, it's like a masterclass. Thank you!
Great tutorial!

just wanted to thank you for the extremely clear video on shortening suit jacket sleeves. Most of my customer who need this are men. On non-working buttons, this works perfectly. Working buttonholes I prefer to shorten from the shoulder if there is enough room in the bicep area. Your instructions are so clear and I really appreciate the time you took to make the video. Thank you for the tutorial. I followed you step by step and altered a pair of khaki pants. They came out very nicely. A 9 out of 10.
I didn’t know how much I needed this video. You are a wonderful teacher!
I have used this method for years. The bonus is an enhanced, lifted butt look from the new pocket placement.
Although, the technique of blending gradually will always look nice, as the daughter of an old time tailor and a seamstress, I'd like to share that the way my parents got the angle of how far to take in was always measured on the client, as some clients are more rounded than others and the angle will not always be exactly the same.
Awesome ! u made it very clear to anyone watching ! Thank you ,

Great video! I am about to take up a waist now. Perfect timing for this video
I have seen many sewing videos but this one is by far the best as she takes you through slowly step by step so you can learn by actually watching and altering at the same time! Good job!
Excellent video
I've done this many times, but never with a real knowledge of HOW to make it smooth and almost impossible to see. I've always counted on wearing a shirt out over the waist to hide the rough alteration! Thank you for this professional tutorial. I loved watching your hands (so beautifully manicured!) and listening to your voice (so positive) and learning the correct way to take in a pair of pants at the waist. LOVELY!!!!!
Holy cow. I am a pretty decent seamstress but you take the cake! Great skills, perfect audio and video. Well done!
The red ball on the seam ripper should be pointed down into the seam when you’re ripping it and it’ll slide right through it and it won’t cut the fabric not sure if you were aware of that
Ripper cut my fabric like that during this experience, oh well.
That's right
As a left handed sewer.. Seam ripping is a very delicate task... That ball usually just freaks me out
I didn’t know that
Omg!!! I didn’t know that either!!
I’m so embarrassed, I’m 64 and have been sewing since 7th grade….. darn red dot!!!!!🤪
Thank you so much for this amazingly thorough explanation!!
Thank you, excellent teaching .now I can alter my pants .So appreciate this
what a fabulous teacher you are! This was amazingly helpful and instructive. Thank you!
thank you so much for your awesome explanation for everything! I enjoyed how you even told us what to do if there's a pucker. I appreciate your camera angles so much since I am a very visual person. I can't wait to give this another go!

@@sewshowwithshae what type of sewing machine are you using? I would love to know if is suitable for all levels of sewers? Its seems fantastic!
You do such an excellent job at explaining every step, which made my pants turn out PERFECT. Thank you!!
A brilliant demo tutorial thank you so much , great explanations , I completed my alteration as you did it and it was very easy to follow.
Your great at what you do and your explaining was superb.
Thank you !
One of the best tutorial. Thank you so much❤️
here's a tip on how to correctly use the seam ripper with the red ball:
"What is the red ball for on a seam ripper?
The red ball is meant to go down towards the inside of your project.
The ball protects the fabric and allows you to smoothly slide the seam ripper through the stitches.
If you place the pointed edge down towards the fabric it can get caught and rip the fabric.
The sharp edge should go up and away from the fabric. Jan 6, 2021
my thoughts exactly. It is amazing how many people do not know how to use a seam ripper correctly.
@@anaidroach5557 My seam rippers don't the plastic ball.
@@Greythoundmom Wait for sale and buy one.
I always wondered why it was there. T Y
Sometimes the ball doesn’t fit into small spaces.
Mluch appreciated for the video. I just took in my jeans legs but the waist I knew took more detail in taking in. Now can finish off my jeans properly! Thank you!
