Frank Rijkaard is truly one of the most unique all around and versatile players of all time. Fun Fact: Rijkaard, Zidane, and Cruyff are the only superstars to win CL as a player AND manager!

@@bricktop. Ronaldo will be off to America next January. I guarantee it. He will want to see out his career playing in the sunshine, not the drizzle of Manchester.
If he does go to play for an MLS club, it'll most likely be in California or Florida. LA Galaxy or Inter Miami. Leaving United mid season would make sense, because the American season starts in March and runs until December. So he'd have two months to train for it.
Anyway, back to Rijkaard. The guy left football management too soon - not at the right time as many on here seem to think.
He still had another decade of management in him. But maybe he got so fed up with being knocked back due to the colour of his skin? - despite all he achieved as both a player and a manager. Perhaps people should consider this as a possible reason why he walked away from football.

When his team had a bad team, he was another world class center back infront of the defense line...but when needed he played like a offensive 8...

You can't compare them, not the same positions. If you want to compare then it has to be Gullit, Rijkaard, Van Basten vs. Messi, Suarez, Neymar OR (Messi, Ronaldhinho, Eto'O). Iniesta and Xavi were not as forward and goal-oriented as Rijkaard although they played the number 8 and 6 positions better. Gullit was a number 10 and so you can't compare him with both Xavi and Iniesta plus Van Basten was number 9 so his profile is different from Messi who played as a roaming 10 and used a s false 9 sometimes. This is why Messi is so good and it's amazing he has been able to score all these goals because he is not a number 9-scoring is not his main focus. can you imagine how many goals Messi would have scored if he only concentrated on scoring goals?

I've always said Frank Rijkaard revived Barcelona, at the time Barca was finishing 4th in the league and fighting for a champions league spot. Guardiola is not a great manager he just inherited Rijkaard's team and in fact Guardiola made some disastrous moves that cost Barca dearly in the long run. I never saw him as a player but my uncle says that Rijkaard could play defense the entire game and if he was bored he would just go forward and so a goal at will.

One of the best defensive midfielder the game has ever seen and honestly even in today's game there has been no one like him around that position. Top DMs from the past 20 years include probably Makelele, Alonso, Kante, Yaya Toure.... most of them are good at defensive task but not so much of dribbling or attacking. But this guy had everything and with such tall frame you could just imagine what a pain he was for the oppositions. He has won almost everything possible as a player, retired without major injury, and then won pretty much everything as a club manager. The guy is so cool to walk away from the game and just lives a normal life. Sometimes it's not a bad thing to know when to stop and enjoy other aspect of the life.

Another thing with Rijkaard is hes a verry verry humble down to earth person , No controversies or bad image on and of the pitch , ( exept if your part of a german national team and your name happens to be Rudi voller . ) He took his time in the sun and moved on . if the passion is gone its the right disision .

It is unfortunate that mainly Barça and Milan fans are the ones who remember him. And even within the Barça fanbase he doesn't get his deserved recognition because his last 2 seasons were not very good. But they fail to realize he brought back the Cruyff philosophy and with Laporta and Ronaldinho managed to turn the club around completely, and then he built the core of the sextuple winning team, two achievement which imo makes him a club legend, because if we didn't have that rebirth in the mid 2000s Barça could've gotten stuck as a club with European prestige but not in the same category as the elite clubs and not become the footballing titan it went on to become.

I lived In Amsterdam and used to see him frequently. He’d take his ‘son’ to the park at Amsterdamse Bos, he always looked miserable. Even when he had his family with him, he looked lonely and sad. You’d have thought that a man that had achieved all that he’d achieved would be a happier person, I guess we just don’t know what goes on inside the minds of the brilliant.

I always preferred the Rijkaard barsa as the Pep one, Rijkaard was the creator of the team and had a more direct game, Pep found a champions team and just fixed the drunk pieces, giving a style that personally I do not like: pass, pass, pass....The more aggressive game of Rijkaard was better for me

Frank Rijkaard was a uniquely talented football player and manager because as a player, he could play in three different positions during any game ( defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder, centre forward); and as a football manager, he was unigue because he had the instinct and natural ability to select players for all the positions he played in, with attacking mind with quick and short passes which were so devastating to defenders that, they did not have the time time to react in time to stop the attackers and midfielders. I call Frank Rijkaard a genius football player and manager. The Rijkaard, Gullit, Van Basten ( R.G.VB) trio in AC Milan was one of the most deadly attacking trio in the world. No wonder Frank Rijkaard replicated the R.G.VB in Barcelona with Ronaldhino, Iniesta, Eto'o ( R.I.E) trio. The Netherlands has also produced many of the world's best football players.
