Why It Feels Like You’re Surrounded by Idiots

  • Does it ever feel like you're surrounded by idiots? Whether you’re smarter than most people or not as smart as you think, coping with stupidity be rather frustrating. But there are several psychological and societal factors that make it seem like stupid people are everywhere. The Dunning Kruger effect is the first thing that comes to mind when dealing with idiots. Indeed, there are a lot of folks out there who overestimate their own intelligence, abilities, and positive qualities in relation to others.
    We also tend to put more weight on negative experiences and information than positive ones overall - known as the negativity bias. In addition, social media filters and algorithms often show us only opinions and perspectives that align with our own. We get trapped in filter bubbles where our own views are reinforced and magnified while dissenting opinions are suppressed or filtered out.
    Now, it's easy to let our cognitive biases and ignorance lead us to assumptions and judgments about the intelligence of others. But rather than labeling someone as stupid or an idiot, we can recognize that all people have a mix of strengths and weaknesses when it comes to different types of intelligence. We can also understand that even very smart people sometimes make questionable decisions or have gaps in their knowledge.
    With more understanding and less labeling, we may realize that not everyone is a complete imbecile. We are surrounded by complex human beings, each with their own unique experiences, strengths, and challenges.

    Existential anxiety is the fuel that makes the fires of ignorance burn so brightly. Every human being in a nutshell:
    - Stuck in a cycle of short-term pleasure over long-term solutions
    - Constant comparison to others, especially on social media
    - Blaming external factors for personal problems and financial struggles
    - Engaging in addictive behaviors to escape reality temporarily
    - Seeking validation through material possessions and external praise
    - Acting tough and aggressive in anonymous situations due to internal frustrations
    - Lack of self-awareness and reluctance to address core issues
    - Helping others only for personal gain and seeking praise afterward
    - Judging and criticizing others despite personal shortcomings
    - Inability to handle delayed gratification, leading to frustration and anger
    - Accumulating material possessions without finding genuine happiness or accomplishment

    Trust me, I could name you hundreds of other people who need to see and hear this. I may sound harsh or like someone who exhibits these exact traits you warned us not to exhibit, but I know how to approach information and complex issues, while many other people fail at it; they fail to comprehend even the most simple things and most common of senses, and I think that gives me every right to mark them as stupid, because they really are. It's not my fault they cannot objectively and carefully approach information, but go ballistic with the first word. They judge too damn easily, and only consider parts of information they like, and dismiss the other parts and people who point at them. I dealt with these kinds of people for far too long and I would consider myself an idiot if I didn't learn anything from it - I know their patterns, their way of thinking, etc., and it evokes a feeling of extreme disgust towards their ways.
    Unlike them, I question myself, my thoughts, beliefs, and opinions every single day, and when something new emerges, I adjust my opinion accordingly. In contrast, they ignore it and continue to force their baseless conclusions upon others, and then call US the irrational ones.
    In short, sometimes people really are just plain stupid and there's no point in having any kind of conversation with them, especially the civil one.
    Just my thoughts, and unlike the people I described here, I won't hate you if you disagree with my take. Cheers. 😌

    • @Noggin-Knowledge
      @Noggin-Knowledge 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It sounds like you've had some challenging experiences dealing with people who struggle to approach information objectively. How do you navigate conversations with individuals who may exhibit these traits, and do you believe there's a way to foster more constructive dialogue with them?

    • @FilipRanogajec
      @FilipRanogajec 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Noggin-Knowledge, thanks. I sure did.
      I navigate them as I would with anyone; I try to explain to them what is and what is not, what I believe in, why I believe in it, and then back it up with evidence and facts. Wish I could see that in more people, but most people just prefer being irrational. If the other party refuses to be logical, objective, constructive, or whatever, then I doubt that any kind of enjoyable conversation can be established with them. Willingness MUST go both ways, not one way.
      And thanks for asking. Hope this helps.

    “My son, keep my words, And lay up my commandments with thee. Keep my commandments, and live; And my law as the apple of thine eye. Bind them upon thy fingers, Write them upon the table of thine heart. Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; And call understanding thy kinswoman: That they may keep thee from the strange woman, From the stranger which flattereth with her words. For at the window of my house I looked through my casement, And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, A young man void of understanding, Passing through the street near her corner; And he went the way to her house, In the twilight, in the evening, In the black and dark night: And, behold, there met him a woman With the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart. (She is loud and stubborn; Her feet abide not in her house: Now is she without, now in the streets, And lieth in wait at every corner.) So she caught him, and kissed him, And with an impudent face said unto him, I have peace offerings with me; This day have I payed my vows. Therefore came I forth to meet thee, Diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee. I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, With carved works, with fine linen of Egypt. I have perfumed my bed With myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: Let us solace ourselves with loves. For the goodman is not at home, He is gone a long journey: He hath taken a bag of money with him, And will come home at the day appointed. With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, With the flattering of her lips she forced him. He goeth after her straightway, As an ox goeth to the slaughter, Or as a fool to the correction of the stocks; Till a dart strike through his liver; As a bird hasteth to the snare, And knoweth not that it is for his life. Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, And attend to the words of my mouth. Let not thine heart decline to her ways, Go not astray in her paths. For she hath cast down many wounded: Yea, many strong men have been slain by her. Her house is the way to hell, Going down to the chambers of death.”

    I pretty much agree with all the comments, but here's my take. When I feel some one is an idiot, I ask them a few questions about their trade (that I already know the answer) and my favorite IQ puzzle, the 3 doors puzzle. In fact, I perceive the person reading this comment is an idiot. Does that declaration make me an idiot?
