- Mihai Covaliu is a Romanian Olympic champion in sabre. Covaliou's first sport was football, but at age nine he began fencing. At the 2000 Summer Olympics, he surprised everyone by reaching the final, beating in semifinal Wiradech Kothny from Germany. Covaliu then defeated Mathieu Gurdan 15-12 to win Romania's first-ever Olympic gold medal in sabre. He managed to finish that season as number one in FIE rankings. For these achievements, he received the title of Distinguished Master of Sports and Commander of the Order of Merit. Mihai’s role model in sport was foil fencer Laura Bade, who won the world championship in 1995 and Olympic Games in the following year. After Beijing Olympics, Covaliu retired to become the head coach of the Romanian sabre team. Under his leading, Romania won the silver medal in the 2009 European Championships at Plovdiv and the gold medal at the World Championships in Antalya. In April 2013, Covaliu was elected president of the Romanian Fencing Federation. The same year, Covaliu was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the International Fencing Federation (FIE).
