- Today we're reviewing the new USSSA DeMarini Zen which will be replacing the Zoa for 2025. The Zen features DeMarini's new "Dark Matter Composite" and is allegedly supposed to be one of the hottest DeMarini U-Trips ever made.

As a father to a 16 yr old ball player who played travel since 8 in SoCal, it’s been interesting watching kids who mashed with -10, -8, -5’s struggle once bbcor is required. You have to learn how to hit especially when velo is high and there are secondary pitches. It’s fun watching the 12 yr olds who are more physically developed launch balls but I know so many of those kids who quit once they got into 9th grade. Teach boys how to hit with a light wood bat or a Baum when they’re young so they can make the transition easier.
Yep. They need the wood bat tournaments before they get to HS.
Contact over power. Kids don't understand the importance of placing a ball, they only wanna hit dingers 😂 Going thru this phase with my son right now.
Agreed, kids should always hit BP with a wood bat before their game bat.
Part of our 10U practices often incorporate rewards for hitting backside, moving runners.
@@rdd2devore409 I’m not a former player but from what I’ve observed, what you’re teaching seems so be what coaches want!! Can you move the runner over, can you execute a play? That seems to get boys more playing time over the player who goes to the plate looking to hit one over the fence. If you want to play, you have to play team baseball. I’ve seen kids who mashed at 12-13u who can’t execute and move a runner over. Those guys always end up sitting and eventually quitting because they never get off the bench. They look great during BP but they never play. Thea coaches seem to want line drives oppo. Obviously that’s really hard. I’ve only seen a handful of HR’s in freshman and JV… maybe a dozen in varsity??? You can’t go up to the plate thinking you’re going to hit one over a 350’ fence when a 17-18 yr old is throwing 85+ with movement and secondary pitches. It just seems to limit your success. The guys that seem to play more are good contact hitters who hit line drives oppo. You’re teaching your boys the right thing to play in HS for sure.
Amazing video, Will! Your thoroughness and unbiased reviews mean the world to us parents buying these bats. My 10yr old son and I wanted to fall in love with the zen drop 8, but after this video we’ll be going icon 30/22 instead.

Since DeMarini figured out what Dark Matter is to make their Dark Matter Composite, it would be nice for them to share that discovery with all the physicists who have been trying to figure that out for decades.

Me and my son love watching these videos. It’s interesting to watch the other kids in the travel league we are in hit with all these bats you guys use and rarely do they ever get decent outfield hits. Meanwhile we have been using an Easton Elevate 30” -10 for the last 3 years and every hit he gets is in the outfield. I wonder what this kid can do if I can ever afford one of these $400 to $500 bats.
Will would you go with a BBCOR V1 Nox , or Easton Split ? If they were the same price which would you prefer ?
The world of USSSA bats is so crazy lol “only 113 bro!” These bats are nutty. My son is just now old enough to play travel ball with USSSA and it’s a crazy fun time. All these kids are holding rocket launchers in their hands 😂
So for how much we actually get to use USSSA bats (tourneys), we haven’t been able to justify getting a new one. How much difference is there between these top bats and the 2022 Orange Meta?

As a softball player, when I look at the icon it reminds me of a softball bat made by Rawlings called the mantra. It is also made of composite and it hits bombs.
So is this a high school bat? When I used to play it was -3 only I didn’t know there was different legal drop sizes
You guys should do an all time bbcor bat madness at some point with all the most hyped bats. Like the OG bat madness with all the different categories but with bats not just from the current year, so like a round could have the green goods, bone saber hybrid, cat x connect… etc. I think it’d be really cool to see all the bats that everyone loved in the last few years face off against all the new bats.
Do they not make drop 3 anymore. Drop 3 was always my go to in high school. I just loved the extra weight. Don’t get me wrong I had an Omaha tpx drop 5 that was a tank and a redline drop 3 that the ball just exploded off of. I still have that damn gold redline.

Right, we are teaching the player to be complete ball players, team players, versatile athletes who understand the game. The earlier these concepts are introduced the better IMO, cheers.

I think there has been a big step up in usssa bats since I used them 3-4 years ago because I was using those dirty south bats and I thought they were the best bats ever but now comparing them to these modern composites they are miles better.

The Rawlings Icon is better, IMO. One question, what exactly does “drop” mean?
The weight of the bat minus the length. So, a 20 ounce, 30", bat would be a -10.

idk what it is, but I personally just like the zen better, maybe because they did something extra with the glitch repaint, but in 13u and 14u, I was hitting 450+ with the CF Glitch 2021

is there an atlas hybrid, the tennesse volunteers are using a 2 piece that has atlas colors, but a different designs and colors than the select pwr. Soo I think it is an atlas hybrid.

The new zen (-5) sounds a lot like the old green (-5) cf zen. I had a green zen back when and those were crazy. Mine lasted a pretty long time too if I remember right

DeMarini is much more durable than Icon or Hype! We swing the Zoa and it's amazing. I would suggest dropping down a size, they are heavier than they are supposed to be. The 30/25 actually weighs almost 29 ounces.
My friends drop 10 Icon broke, it has a giant crack on it

Icon really better than the black n Red cat 9 composite???
Yeah, the only downside on the Icon was it was pretty fragile (which at 500 bucks isn't great). If they managed to really improve the durability without affecting the performance then yeah. Thats honestly better than the hype is anyway. Its as close as any bat to being as hot but its super complete. Add on durability...it has to be number 1 for a while befoee someone manages to top it.

It’s only banned in one drop weight and from one association. The vast majority of players can still use it.
I swung this bat today and it blew my pb velo out of the water it went from 84 to 86 at 13 years old

Did you break in the Zen at all before comparing to a well used Icon?
They are both drop 5 so it really does not help to get a ton of swings or it’s probably going to break depending on the bat. I use the Rawlings icon in a drop 10 but I’ve swung both the drop 5 hype fire and Rawlings icon and they are RIDICULOUSLY HOT. But the Hype fire just ain’t that durable compared to the icon. Plus everyone one my team was using the drop 5 icon since only on person owned it and it didn’t break or crack. Plus I’ve been using the drop 10 as my gamer for 2 seasons but my summer baseball tryouts are next week. Overall I wouldn’t get the Zen over the hype fire or the Rawlings icon.
We had used that Icon for one single video. Pretty much all the swings put on it are on camera from our 2024 USSSA video.
Also, when hitting balls 110+, it takes a USSSA bat about 5-10 hacks to break in 😂
