  • Will DIY fruit fly media produce fruit flies just as well as the commercial brands of fruit fly media? That's what I wanted to find out, so I decided to do an experiment. In this video I also show you step by step how to prepare your own homemade fruit fly media and set up a culture for breeding fruit flies. If you have dart frogs or are thinking about getting into dart frogs this is a crucially important thing to know how to do, because fruit flies are about the only thing you can feed to a dart frog and most pet stores don't carry them. So you have to know how to breed the fruit flies for yourself.
You can see the results of this experiment in the video I posted a few weeks after this one entitled, “complete dart frog care.”

Sorry for confusion. To see the results of this experiment, go to the dart frog care video that I posted about 4 videos after this one. 😀

I have found the more you give them and the media the bigger the culture and it will produce. For my media, I use a very rip banana more brown than yellow. Means it's ready to eat. I mix instant potatoes, I will added a touch of calcium powder with de and rep-cal vitamins. Healthy food healthy animals. I do not feed frogs, I do however feed top dwelling fish that love them, along with baby rollie pollies, and springtails.

Sorry if that was confusing. I did a video called “complete dart frog care” about 5 or 6 videos later and in that video, about 3/4 of the way through I talked about the results of this experiment. The homemade media worked fine but the coffee filters did not. They just collapsed into the media. The end result is that I am sticking with the supplies from Josh’s frogs.

@@WonderfulWorldReptiles I had no problem with using coffee filters. I only raise fruit flies for my jumping spiders.

You didnt do it right. they were likely laying eggs on the paper inside and the larvae didnt make it to the media and starved. when a fruit fly larva hatches it only has an hour or so before it will starve to death. you're better off just cutting plastic or thin deli sandwich styrofoam into strips and wedging it into the medium.
You can also buy a cheap plastic or straw broom and cut a bunch of the bristles and use those. just make sure it's clean and unused. Simply mix an overripe banana and potato flakes with a bit of vinegar and sugar. Cheap and (IMO) superior to any commercial mixes you can get. you do not need excelsior and only your creativity will limit you...
The method that one guy suggests with the cinnamon and potato flakes and wax paper is garbage. it doesnt work, plus cinnamon is a natural insecticide and the oleoresins harm the larvae. the reality of the bug industry is to push products onto you, not help you.
they constantly attack petco but pull the same shady marketing strategies. I'm so sorry they made you waste your time.

Thanks for the info. So far I’ve been sticking to the Josh’s frogs media and exerciser because I always have success with that.

what is your water/vinegar solution measurements?

Well, I gave up on the homemade media and just use the media from Josh’s frogs now. I’ve had a lot more success with that so I just decided to stick with that. It’s also a lot easier, just put the media in and add boiling water.

@@WonderfulWorldReptiles Saw this before watching much of the video. Saved me 12 minutes! Thanks!

@@SupremeGecko Well, I guess as far as experiments go, the homemade fruit fly media was a fail. But I did learn from it though.
