He and Randy Rhoads were my favorites. Also liked DeGarmo, Lifeson, Page, Knopfler, and Vaughan. There's also a few new bands worth a listen like Highly Suspect and Greta Van Fleet. Almost forgot Jamie West-Oram.
I first heard this album in 1988 and was in awe of the power that every single note packed. I make it a point to listen it at least a couple of times a year no matter what. I am now 52 and bought my first guitar last year. When I saw this video, shortly thereafter, I was truly inspired to buckle down and really get to know my new companion. Thank you for sharing your talent and giving me something to strive for. " Madness Reigns !!!""
Not good enough to make a cover video yet. I'm plugging away at it though. I just wish I had more spare time. I already spend every spare minute practicing. I practically sleep with my guitar. Thank so much for asking though. Maybe one day...
@@Zacsondyyou did a great job on it, But it's the wrong guitar for playing this. My ears can recognize even if blindfolded that it's a Les Paul in drop c. You need a strat style guitar to play this because when I recognize it's a Les Paul, it's off Wrong guitar
Amazing cover, you got Criss' tone down great! Criss was amazing! Jon Oliva, Criss Oliva, and Paul O'Neil writing songs together is just on another level. Once in a lifetime, I wish Criss and Paul were still with us. May they R.I.P. 😔
The tone is close but this is the wrong guitar to play this on, you need a strat style guitar I can hear the difference. If blindfolded I can tell this is a Les Paul I can recognize it even in drop c tuning, it's obvious to my ears.
That’s the only guitar I owned at the time. Well, I may have had an Ibanez RG 550 but the neck had a crack where it met the body. It was my only option if I wanted to record it. I do now have a Charvel though. That could be appropriate.
That was great i saw them like 4 or 5 times & met them & talked with them got them to sign my hall of the mountain king back cover album photo ! I got that song down to and you played it perfectly all you missed was the part where jon is strangling criss in the video part where he picks that one note twice really fast before you do that repeating part over and over and then the double string bends up picking two strings at once part which both are easy so i know you can do them if you can play the solo's and rhythms which you did do so i think you just didn't want to break away from that part maybe plus it takes two guitarist to do the two separate parts so that's probably why but otherwise that was the best cover of that awesome song I've seen to date so far ! What kind of les paul is that I'm not familiar with that model it's very nice and sounds great !!!
This is a 1977 Les Paul Artisan. Thanks for the kind words. I saw them in the gutter ballet tour. And the part of this song you referred to about Jon headbanging with Criss, he was right in front of me and he grabbed my hair and I was “Criss” for that part!
Ohhh my goodness that was spectacular!! You capture that magic and the tone as well …. And that is a beast of a guitar. Is it a Gibson Les Paul , the headstock plate throws me off Great work Sir
Insanely great job. My band used to cover this song in the late 80s when I was a kid. Ive always loves it. This and legions. You did a much better job than I ever could . Fantastic!!!
Chris used the Double Pre Amping trick of the day back then. it consisted of a few old Yamaha 100 watt solid state heads! you needed a few because they would blow up or get fried doing this!!! You would come out of the output on the Yamaha Head then plug into the Marshal 100 watt JCM head input both amp heads on 10. then lookout!!!! what a killer sound! My name is Tom Yazvac. I have a credit on the liner notes on the Hall of the Mountain king album. I rented John Oliva My synthesizer rig for shows in Florida were I lived . we hung out all the time back then.
@@thomasyazvac1219 Wow! Thanks for that great insider information - I have always wondered every time I listened to the track over the decades just how those single rhythm notes sounded so massively thick, in a different way that you get from just doubling tracks. IMO it was well worth the sacrifice of a few amp heads!
Savatage was such an underrated and under appreciated band. Rip Criss Oliva, one of the best guitarists I’ve ever heard.

No, because everyone that underrates this song is dead :D
Indeed a metal relyc

Don't forget to check out the rest of the album as well as the album Power of the Night and Sirens..
Freaking awesome 👍👍👍
I love how the song starts off with a blistering solo. Excellent cover, you have the tone down perfectly.
RossBayCult thanks! This is my favorite guitar player.
@@Zacsondy What tuning did you use here? Thanks
@@motoman9944 Drop D, then take that and tune it down a whole step. So low C.

Criss was an amazing player, with every Savatage record he was getting better and better! Great cover, you nailed it...
