  • From our 2016 trip to Europe.
Reims was a major Roman settlement when Paris was still just an insignificant little village. Clovis, the first ruler to unite the formerly separate Frankish kingdoms, was based in Reims, and his conversion & baptism here in 496 AD greatly expanded the influence of Christianity throughout France. The first cathedral was built here in the 4th c., and for a period of 600 years (1223 - 1825) all but three of France’s kings were crowned here. Today's structure dates mostly to the 13th c.
The cathedral has a fabulously carved west façade with three portals containing more sculpted figures than any church in Europe except Chartres. One such figure is the famous Smiling Angel, a symbol of Reims. Above her is the crucifixion, while other biblical scenes adorn the rest of the facade along with various animals, both real and mythical, serving as decorations or downspouts. The north facade also has carvings of the final judgment.
The cathedral’s interior has interesting stained glass ranging from the 13th to the 20th century. Marc Chagall's trio of windows are immediately recognizeable. Another window celebrates Reims' association with the champagne industry (we'll visit one of the champagne cellars in the next video).
The video ends with a series of still photos from our visit.
