When you have a cake fail just cut it up into chunks and put it in a glass bowl and top it with pudding and Cool whip or whipped cream in layers and call it a birthday trifle!!! 😊🧡🧡🧡
On the low cupboard where you'd like to turn it into a drawer one day, I have an "interim" fix. Get a clear plastic bin that's slightly smaller than the mouth of the cupboard, fill it up with the contents, and slide it into the space (store the top of the bin somewhere else). When you need something you just grab the bin like it's a drawer and slide it out when you need to see what's in there. I have an old kitchen and had some extra clear bins I realized were the perfect size to do this. They've worked out beautifully.
Pro organizer here. I recommend the pull out drawers for every lower regular cabinet shelf. I’ve put them in every home I’ve owned and every client kitchen And when we remodeled our current kitchen we have only drawers. Lower cabinets with shelves are awful.
To make bread easier at home, you can assemble several bread kits by putting all of the premeasured dry ingredients in a ziploc. You can write on the outside the type of bread and wet ingredients if needed. Then when you want to make bread, add the wet ingredients and yeast. Dump in the dry on top and start the machine. What takes the most time is getting everything out and measuring.
Thank you Christy for that tip! I will have to try the pre assembly, because I agree that all the work is in the measuring & getting everything out/putting it away.
You can make that lower cabinet into a drawer by sourcing a plastic bin very close to the size of the cabinet. Then just put everything into the bin and slide it in and out for use. I've done that for a few of mine, and love it! Great video, thanks so much! ❤
For the life of me I will never understand why we get so many crumbs in our ustensils drawers!!! 🤯 When I reorganized the kitchen, I got rid of evrything we didn't use (no maybes) and I'm so happy I was ruthless, everything is now so accessible! I love your 1950 kitchen, I find it so inviting! Take care and cheers from Canada 🧡🎃
Crumbs come from leaving the drawer open while prepping food. If you grab what you need and immediately close the drawer, you’ll find you don’t get crumbs in it.
Shannon, you have so many good ideas in this video. I especially like how you reuse containers to adapt to your needs. Your kitchen is so cute. I like the 50’s feel. The cake fail was so funny, my kids would have put it in bowls with ice cream on top. Great job!
Hi Ann, I laughed so hard when that cake didn't work out. We ate a lot of it jus off the plate, but I thought it was better to start over with a fresh cake for the party LOL. I hope you are doing well.
I'm laughing with you at your cake fail! I'm a pastry and that still happens to me sometimes! When this happens I take the cake, cut it into chunks, make or buy pudding and whip cream and make a trifle. Easy save! 🙂
It was such a shock to me because that recipe has worked before LOL. Next time if that happens I will definitely try out the trifle you suggested! Thank you =)
Shannon, my pantry has deep cabinets as well and I also use bins in the front for easy access, but I use a lazy Susan in a cabinet near my stove for bottles of oil, vinegar, etc. Love your channel!!
LOL Same here! One time I totally ruined the look of a cake so I put the pieces in individual glasses with whipped cream and fruits. My guests thought it looked so pretty so I didn't tell them it was from failed cake 🤭 ( the taste was great but it was all stuck like Shannon's)!🤗
I have a bundt cake pan that sometimes does the same thing; depending on what recipe. Your kitchen is so nice and neat. I am always going through cupboards and drawers too; but seem to need more dishes and things that I would like. We regularly have 10 to 12 for dinners with family.
Hi Krista, that is a good idea and I didn't flour the first bundt pan, I should have! I definitely greased and floured the glass pan ( the second time around) LOL. I kept thinking this better not happen the second time around haha.
Your attitude is refreshing! Back then if that had happened during my son's 6th birthday I would have panicked and thought his birthday was ruined. The cake was a major thing because I always did it in a certain theme and had it all planned out. I'm sort of a baker so I get perfectionistic on those types of things. I still remember that his sixth birthday cake was a cake in the shape of a school bus I remember because he had asked for that. I remember thinking that the people looking out the windows looked odd.. why didn't I just go the simple route lol?! That homemade bread is unbelievable. I've always wanted a bread machine but never wanted to store something that big. Yours looks manageable and the bread looks completely amazing. You make it look so simple, it really that easy to make homemade bread? Any tips on which kind of machine to buy would be greatly appreciated if you have a second. I hope you're having a wonderful day, Shannon! Happy birthday to your little guy!!
Thank you Julia! Wow that is amazing you were able to make such a special cake. I have to keep it simple because I don't bake super often so I usually stick to the basics lol. Bread is so easy to make with a bread machine. The machine I have is a simple cuisinart bread maker, I like it because it's very basic and easy to use. Like you said it does take up lots of room, but at this point I feel it is worth it. I hope you are having a great day!
@@shannontorrens1 thank you, shannon! I think it would be worth it because I don't typically love to get store-bought bread with ingredients that aren't the healthiest. And it just has to be a good feeling to have a beautiful loaf of fresh bread. I remember when I first found your channel you were making homemade sourdough. I'm going to look up a Cuisinart bread machine. And by the way I think you do wonderful. What really counts is that our kids have these wonderful memories and are excited about it which really is knowing that they are so loved and seeing that they loved eating their cake! P. S. Our son is 25 now and it probably took me until his teen years to realize he didn't even really care for cake but wanted pie instead haha
Hi Shannon, did you spray paint your kitchen cabinet pulls black or were they already black? If you spray painted them, has the spray paint held up well? Thank you!
So the original handles were black but the paint was chipping off so I did spray paint them again, but they are chipping again. I was able to find the exact handles at Home Depot and they are really cheap and already black. So on the new cupboard I just used the new ones. If I ever get the motivation to fix the old ones, I think the solution would be to strip the original handles of all paint and then spray them again. But let's be honest that will probably never happen LOL.
Lol! We have the same handles in our 1960’s house but ours were more of a copper. I like yours though! I was thinking about spray painting them all black. Lots of work but new handles are SO expensive!!
Everyone's worst fears with a bundt pan! I'm scared of them. Pull-out trays are so useful! Now you'll have to oil all the hinges. Good job on the cabinets.

I love that idea! I don't know why I didn't think of anything LOL.

Maybe your husband can make kitchen cabinet drawers, since he is a carpenter.

Thank you Shelley that is such a great idea! Anything that gets pushed to the back of that bottom cupboard never sees the light of day again LOL.
I laughed so hard at the cake fail. Thank you for sharing that. We all need to laugh more often.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Hi April, I can't wait to redo this kitchen and I love the idea of only having drawers. They work so much better!

Beautiful kitchen! I love kitchens made in the 50s, they are pretty, simple yet so functional. Good quality and timeless chic :)
Thanks so much! 😊
Your home is beautiful! The "1950s cabinets" I see you mention only add to the charm. Thanks for your motivation and tips you provide.
I had a failed cake coming out of a pan so I just crumbled it up and pours frosting over it! It was a big success! :)
That sounds good! Next time I am going to try that. =)

That is a great idea! I will look into doing that.
So True! Ikea Trofest bins work very well in my older cupboards. Only a few dollars each too.
What a good idea, I will go measure and buy a couple of baskets. 😊
Great inspiration as always. Oh, dear the poor cake - lucky you had another option 🙂.
Thank you! 😊

Thank you Sharon!! 😊 Yes the cake fail was a learning experience and not the first time I have had a cake not work out for a birthday LOL

@@shannontorrens1 Thank you Shannon! I had to improvise as I was pressed for time lol!🌟

I bought that at a farmers market years ago, I am pretty sure it was handmade.

Hi Jan! It was so weird that the bundt cake pan did that, but now I know I won't use it for that recipe LOL. I hope you are having a good day.
I always get motivated to look for something to declutter after watching you and I say to myself…“What would Shannon do?”
Thank you Jill! I will take that as a compliment. =)
I was wondering if you ever flour the pan after greasing it. I’m a little old fashion by always doing that.

You could have salvaged the cake by adding a sour cream like ingredient and making cake pops 🎉rolling the baked crumbs into balls
Great idea!!
For the life of me I don’t understand how we clean the utensils before we put them away and crumbs appear in them. It happens to everyone. Weird 😼😹
