Spock took this amazingly well because if my girlfriend had dumped me via impromptu musical number with my friends and several co-workers as backup singers I would have simply piloted a shuttle into the nearest sun.

Um you might find that you enjoy musicals
I know nothing about this show, but after tiktok clips of this musical episode I went to Spotify. This is remarkable.. the composition, Orchestration, the whole cast can sing. I'm tempted
This is a perfect blend of all previous Star Treks and is a fantastic intro to the lore. Trek aims to explore humanity in a very broad way and blends campy fun with a lot of critical thoughts. Starting with Strange New Worlds may be a little challenging to understand all the references but it's not a bad place to start. I'd recommending watching The Next Generation as well. Voyager and Enterprise are personal faves of mine but lots of people Love Deep Space Nine even thought it bores me a bit. Lower Decks is pure campy fun. The JJ Abrams films are a fun way to see an alt version but also introduce you to the main cast of the The Original Series (TOS). In terms of timeline, this series, Strange New Worlds, takes place just prior to TOS with Pike being the captain before Kirk (of TOS).
I don't think everybody can sing. It's just they are voice trained as actors and they found their range on where it compliments them. Some have been in musical theater and some put out records. Celia Rose Gooding (Grammy Winner) and Christina Chong (Who has put out music) were the stand outs and have belted their performance showcasing their range.

It's a great entry point for Star Trek. All you need to know going in, is that Pike is aware of the Bad Thing that is going to happen to him 7 years in the future. There, you're now ready to go in on episode 1 and get caught up with this fantastic show. It's done comedy, horror, courtroom drama, war film, musical... it's not fumbled a genre yet. I love it so much, dive on in.

Somebody pointed out that this song and Spock's "I'm the X" are the same melody, just arranged differently, different key, and different tempo/lyrics. Very clever.

It sounds like Nurse Chapel too as opposed to Jess Bush. I don't know much about voice acting, but I always assumed maintaining a character's voice in song can be tricky after seeing/hearing other actors struggle with that.

As an Australian, she does me proud . Some trivia for people, she was on two episodes on the long running Australian drama 'Home and Away', then made her way to the U.S, over the years and i think this was one of if not her most major screen role to date.
This is also i believe how Chris Hemsworth got his start. He went from 'Home and Away' to a small cameo in the new Star Trek movie reboots as James Kirks dad who died in Nero's attack at the start of the movie. Obviously he's now THOR 😂

The show was fab but to me this song is in a class of its own. Such an infectious number and the cast dancing was awesome. How feel good… unless your .Spock :)

A few years later, she's still a nurse on the Enterprise and Spock is first officer to the next captain. I can see why Spock becomes wholly Vulcan in his demeanor, getting your heart broken is a horrible feeling.
I get what you're saying but... "still" a nurse? She never wanted to be anything but a nurse, being a nurse is not the side B of a doctor: it's its own thing. She's a nurse with the specialized studies she wanted to pursue. Still, this explains their non-couple dynamics in TOS and I like it.
I see this break up, in both songs, as the beginning of the ascendance of spock, and the downfall of chapel, given how things turn out.
Remember, SNW is a PREQUEL.
the whole number is brilliant, but that tracking shot of Spock at 2:21 conveys his heartbreak in just a few seconds. Props to everyone from the director, to Peck, to the editor for that one.

I think that was the whole point of the episode. Everything was suppose to be in the narrative that they're stuck bound by the rules of a musical universe.
Which of course includes obvious "I'll say this so it will happen." tropes.

Everybody really gets down on Chapel for publicly dumping Spock via musical in front of all of his fellow officers but in her defence I would like to point out that Spock is the one who chose to air their relationship drama in front of everybody while she was trying to celebrate a big accomplishment.
Yes, it was shitty of her to not tell him about the fellowship (although understandable when you realize that she genuinely fell for him and now thinks that he’s just using her to flirt with his human half for a bit before he gets sick of her) but Spock could have chosen to have that confrontation in private and been broken up with in a much less humiliating way.
Spock WANTED this confrontation to happen the way that it did, and while it’s understandable that he feels hurt and betrayed it was still a very petty and immature thing to do, and I will stand by that opinion.
Kind of expected it to end but not like this lol.

Spock has the whole half human and half Vulcan issues along with not knowing how to truly express himself.
While chapel has a lot of baggage and it felt like Spock was another casual fling for her. Especially as she showed she once dumped a guy because she got bored in an episode. Like sure there was some chemistry but it felt like they not ready for a serious relationship.
Honestly
Spock should have see a therapist and not gotten into an relationship until he was more emotionally mature or better able to express himself.
While chapel probably has a type and it's definitely not Spock. Considering how the canon goes.

Everyone saying Spock wrecked his whole engagement for Chapel clearly watched a different episode than I did. He only went to Chapel AFTER T-pring called off the engagement after Chapel risked her life to save it (and Spock to an extent but let’s face it, his life was not on the line).
Remember y’all, NOTHING has T-pring beat for worst breakup (where Spock is concerned). And Chapel couldn’t exactly help the whole “song and dance in front of the whole crew” part. In fact Spock and Uhura instigated it!
I think the truth is somewhere in between
Christine is definitely not at fault for Spock's engagement being broken, but Spock's feelings for her did influence his behavior towards T'Pring, which then lead to her calling it off.
But yeah, Christine carries no blame and shouldn't be stopped from chasing this dream/opportunity because of it.
@@Olochguthe strange thing is: why is she opposing Spock and the fellowship/career?She does'nt have to be with Spock, but the way she put an end at the relationship was rude, even contradictory with the past episodes. She wasn't even talking to Spock, she was leaving without saying anything and ending up by osmosis.They didn't show Spock as an obstacle before, I think this is what turns the scene strange...But I still like the song and that was she breaking with Spock, but would be better constructed
@@helberlessa6614the seeds of this were planted in the turbolift with Boimler. He *beep*ed up and unintentionally drove this wedge between Christine and Spock in her mind. She grew cooler and more distant since that happened.

Had to get the subs and manually time them in youtube studio, depending on how quick you work, how pedantic you are about timings and stuff, a 4min clip can take a couple hours or so >.

It's nearly identical to "I'm The X", it's written in it's major relative (A) to "I'm the X" (F#m). There's a reason why and it's deliberate.

Because it's their song and I'm the Ex is kind of the reprise to I'm Ready.
Yeah, the songs are identical, because they are the happy/sad major/minor mirror images of each other. Which is what the characters in the show are. Spock is serious and logical, and Chapel (in Spock's own words) is "happy and carefree, the opposite of me".
You can even take the lyrics from one song and sing them to the backing track of the other. It's INCREDIBLY well done, and is the emotional resolution of two seasons of star-crossed love affair.

She did if i remember correctly. But her rejoining the Enterprise under Kirk was to find her missing fiance/husband. Probably since her previous experience taught her that the ship would most certainly find him. Since she rejoined with Starfleet(?) she took up her old post as nurse seeing as that was her last commission on the Enterprise.
Umm... nothing wrong with being a nurse, btw. they save our asses over and over again.. just in case you did not know that.
Ah, the scene that makes Nurse Chapel completely unlikeable by humiliating Spock in front of the entire crew! What a night in the theater!! Let's see -- So far, Chapel has used Spock (who has betrayed his fiance as a result), humiliated him in front of the entire crew and lied -- without remorse -- to the Captain over the possible murder of a Klingon Ambassador on board the Enterprise. What a gal! All the traits of a borderline psychopath. True Starfleet material! But let's forget about all of that. It's a musical!!
To be fair, the musical anomaly does compel people to express feelings in ways they wouldn't have otherwise.

@@agamemnonn1 sometimes people are really bad at communicating their needs in a relationship and this causes the relationship to not work very well. this is a problem both of them had to the extreme both in this relationship and in their previous ones. their relationship spelled disaster from day one and a certain someone from the future butting in certainly doesnt help.
it sucks but it also sucks that he kinda ended up seeing her as this vulcan equivalent to a manic pixie dream girl thats gonna fix him and show him from Real Love Is (not that icky Vulcan love), when Chapel has been shown from season one to be pretty flightly when it comes to connections and building relationships and pretty unwilling to commit to the idea of Loving Someone, which also sucks.
buf in terms of his character development the implication is that what he will learn from this will help him become like how spock is in the original series. if it makes you feel any better for spock, theres an episode in tos where chapel pines after spock and gets rejected and leaves the ship about it.
All this did was turn Capel into a stereotypical woman (ask any dude about a breakup and it will probably be eerily similar) and made her a bit less likable.

but hey, its a very funny way of explaining how he ended up beinging the much more stoic version of spock seen in tos. him being butthurt bc his first rebound fling didnt go well. lmao.
@@spectralan0maly a simple discussion would have done wonders. She didn’t even entertain the idea of asking Spock to join her. Nope, straight to the dump for no reason. Spock was willing to turn his back on his culture for her and she repaid that through ghosting and gaslighting.
Nurse Chapel would not have told Spock to ef off; so the writers screwed that up, just like making a singing episode, total crap.
The Chapel you knew was a much older and wiser one. We saw how impetuous Kirk was as a lieutenant and it got him killed. Just about every character in Star Trek had a character development thread.
Jess Bush is a beautiful woman but when she does that manic grin at a minuite in she looks like Hugo Weaving :/
