Broken body, broken heart and soul. So many ways to be broken. I went to Scotland to do a one month housesit in a historic east coast village, I walked, I explored, i marvelled and fell in love with it all. I found a house, a pink stone one, with the sea on three sides of it, and moved in. Just me and my carry on bag. I walked along a coastline that didn’t have anything to say what era I was in. I soaked up the stories, the myths and legends and felt it deeply. A week later my son back in Canada took his life. After returning to Canada, and all the decisions I had to make, I came back to my new home numb, broken, suffering post traumatic stress, the only thing that made sense to me was the patterns nature makes. The way the waves create ridges and curves on the sand, the sound of pebbles as they roll and slip when pushed by the sea, a little bay with shells that I could press into my palm, rippling grasses and the slow movement of haar, tendrils of it reaching for me from the sea. Scotland healed me, I found my self again, I baked myself a new life. I baked for cafes, pubs and poured myself into things that would bring pleasure to others. I connected with my son through my memories of him enjoying my food. This show, this man, this country have brought back this intense time for me.
Thank you for sharing this journey. I had an 11-day NDE in and out and I will say during all that time I basked in the movements you describe and more: the pattern of fish as they school, the way snow billows off from a snowy roof then returns in perfect Fibronici form until it falls to the ground. While there, the music was amazing and mirrored those sights and patterns. When I returned to health, everything changed for me. My taste in food, my ability to play piano by ear. I've since returned to the monotony of normalcy, but quickly attend to remnants of the Divine as you describe when fortunate enough to see them present
@@latitude1904 have you heard of The Whiskey Wasps? Have a listen to their song, Our Own Christmas Song, you can find it here on TH-cam, and the video shows the beautiful east coast I lived on. Stumbled upon this video very randomly and I must say - this was unexpectedly wholesome, captivating and felt nicely familiar, the conversations were so natural and laid back. Here for it!
Giles Duley is a total badass. He lost both legs and one arm while serving as a combat photographer in Afghanistan. Eating crabs and lobster in his car with one arm! He is dominating!
Perhaps the most enjoyable food show I have ever watched. My heart is filled with love after this hour. Eating top-quality seafood in your car . . . it's like I am a student again. You can have a Michelin restaurant in your car; little wine, little food and the beauty of this wonderful creation we call Mother Earth. Blessed be.

Spot on about a cook for sous chef because I have been both but when I was called a chef and people would find out, I didn’t have a formal education they would immediately look down on me, but when I was in a job where I was technically a line cook people were so amazed that I could come up with things at the last minute when we ran out of ingredients and I would just say yes, I learned everything I know from my grandmother and the galloping gourmet lol
Wonderful to see the marvellous foods of Scotland being highlighted, not enough people are aware of the superb produce available & exported from our beautiful nation. Thank you Giles 🙏🏻🏴💙
I went on a week long trip to Scotland when I was 10 and I did a 12 hour bus tour and went all around. It's by far the most beautiful part of the UK and the people are the friendliest within the UK. As a Londoner, it was a completely different experience and it was like I had gone to a different country. I highly recommend anyone to go up to Scotland. The Highlands and the Loch Ness are really nice places to go to
Scotland is a different country (different to England). The definition of 'country' is intentionally vague for exactly this reason; it allows banding together under a national name and identity, without national sovereignty. Great Britain is a nation and a country, England and Scotland are countries.
This is the kind of brilliant content from Munchies I originally subbed for! Totally inspiring food doc, makes me want to go to Scotland! Thanks for producing this.
I usually don`t like to watch food documentary but it this one was way more then just the usual cook show. Those people and landscape of Scotland, all together perfect to feel just by watching happy and satisfied with life. Thank you!

Exceptional. Giles busted thru the wall & let the light of the universe all of us harbor shine thru! What an entertaining look at the Island, it’s physical environment, local cuisine and that je ne sais pas all Scots have that make us love them.
Wow Scotland is such a magical place! Always a favourite destination as a kid from sunny Spain. I left Europe in 1992 and have been itching to go back since. This makes it even more so! Thank you for this video
This man is the strongest human being I’ve ever coming across. He’s an absolute credit to humanity. 🙏🏻 Thank you for putting together such a fantastic documentary about Scotland 🏴
29:50 When people think of giving up, as Giles says he considered, I guess, if we can push aside the pain and think that even moments like this, eating amazingly delicious food, make life worth living. I know that's naive in a lot of ways, but sometimes if the sweep of our life is bleak, even a beautiful sky is worth looking at.
Went to Scotland a few years back with my family and went on tours, drove around and I just fell in love with the Highlands. Some places which I unfortunately have lost the name for was just straight out of a book. Absolutely magical. I want to go back soon to experience more of it, maybe even camp out in the wild for a few days.
haven't had much time to watch anything lately, and just generally been very down, but so glad that i made the time to watch this brilliant segment from beginning to end. born and raised in canada, but have had an affinity for scotland/all things scottish as far back as i can remember. as a small boy, it mostly existed as this epic and mythical faraway landscape from films and tales, but as i grew older, it extended to being the home of my beloved brown liquid, which really does have the ability to transport you to different times and places, as well as to the warmest people, some of the most incredible foods, and overall just such an amazing culture. i so badly want to visit; to explore as much of the land as i can. mr. giles, you are fucking amazing- i cannot wait to crush more of whatever it is you output. a new fan from canada, and a photographer myself- would be honoured to snap your portrait someday.
This is the second episode of Giles Duley's adventure that I have had the pleasure to watch and what I love most about this documentary is that I get completely lost in watching it. Very inspirational in so many ways, Scotland, Gin making, hill walking, Oban seafood hut, minging and blue murder cheese, scallops and black pudding, haggis toastie, simply good food well filmed. Thank you
