Man these was the prime years of CFB and this game was a decade defining game, Texas football hasn’t been the same since and this was the beginning of the Saban takeover I don’t even call it a dynasty
I was listening to the ESPN GameDay pod today and Rece Davis chronicled how much Texas fell after this game. It's amazing what happened to that program since then. Maybe now Texas is on the road back but I remain super skeptical of Sark and those players as they don't seem to have that mental fortitude. I think they win tomorrow but stub their toes a couple times in epic fashion. This particular game was tremendous but has a huge "what if" factor to it.
There were so many things Texas did wrong in this game. Mack should've taken a knee before halftime you're down 17-6. Knowing you can move the ball considering all the points they left on the field in the first half. Then @3:08 in the fourth quarter NO ONE picked up Eryk Andrews blitzing off the corner causing that fumble. But, what happened, happened starting the Alabama run. This game should've ended 28-24 Texas.
I wouldn't say he was the worst backup ever to play in the biggest game. Let's be real here. He made some big plays. This was on Mack Brown 1. poor coaching throughout the game. 2. Not having Gilbert ready to go. Hell, I'll go so far as to say if Colt was really that dude, he would've played through the pain. I don't think Vince Young would've allowed Mack to take him out of the Natty and he faced a far better defense than Colt.
Mack Brown's poor coaching killed them in this game. Let's be real here. The score is deceiving as hell. Texas was driving down 24-21. It took a late up-picked-up blitz. Which I blame on Mack. To beat them. The Texas offense was rolling "no pun" in the second half. This game should've ended with Texas on top 28-24. To the victor goes the spoils. What this showed is that Colt McCoy was a frail waif of a QB, and that following kick off TX would play VERY DIRTY... that launch off the feet to hit the Bama return man trying to make a catch was dirty as hell... that was a cheap shot on a defenseless player looking for the ball... they did that KNOWING they could take a hard dirty hit and maybe steal a possession.
