Hey Eric - Just want to take a moment to thank you for the time you have put into your videos - you have been a huge help to me in making my transition from Alexa to HomeKit. As I was watching this video, I was figuring out in my head that this automation was similar to what I created using shortcuts, but I love how easy it was to do that in Eve!

Good tip in using the Eve app for more complex automations. I haven't set up too many automations using sensors, but that's definitely coming in the future. One that I like is turning on the back porch lights when the back door is opened (only at night). We're always letting dogs out so this one is great. I have a smart plug that my wife's hair curlers are plugged into. The hair curlers do not have an on/off switch so my wife has to remember to unplug them each day. I have created a scene called "Good Morning" that will turn this plug on so her curlers will heat up while she is taking a shower. I would like to create an automation in the EVE app that will turn off this plug after 30 minutes when it detects that the plug has turned on. Can you help me with this as I can't seem to be able to figure it out. I was able to set an automation through another scene called "I'm leaving", but again my wife would have to remember to "activate" this scene which defeats the whole purpose of having HomeKit do this for us automatically. Does an IOS device with the eve app have to remain at home? Of course my phone is going to be with me. I have two Apple TV's which act as homekit hubs - and I also started using lutron devices and their hub. I know Lutron is separate - and wouldn't really expect Apple TV to store these EVE app instructions either. So I'm guessing that I'd need eve on an Ipad that stays at home. Is that right?

Wouldn’t it be better to do to automatizations , one to turn on if lights are off and another to turn off if lights are on? That way they will go on when you go down and off when you come up. And not get left in the dark if you stay more than 10’ or left on more than necessary if you o let go down 1’ ? Would that work ?

Hi Eric. Great video. I have used Smartthings for 6 years bit having Apple Phones, ipads, macs and Apple TV's wanted to move to Homekit, especially with SMARTTHINGS stock seemingly disapearing worldwide and it just not look as slick. However it does just work as you would expect which Homekit does not. So in my Homekit quest i purchased a Hue sensor to test if can mimick all basic settings. For example, light comes on with motion, and goes off after 15 minutes of no motion. You can't do this however. It appears movement only pauses the countdown and doesnt reset this. I have found shortcuts to reset it, however due to scripting this appears to only work for a few minutes because just refuses to work. Can the Eve app help? EXCELLENT. Your Eve solution appears to be one way I have to go to setup my two dream automations. But! Is Eve still the answer, or have you found another way without going outside Homekit? DREAM1: I wanted to turn on my AppleTV and LG with one command. My solution was to put them on the same VOCOlinc smart plug because my LG didn’t support the fancy features, and my AppleTV wouldn’t wake up/turn on without calling it on separately. DREAM2: I wanted to have my VOCOlinc color flux light bulb on the front porch to turn on at sunset to red at 50%, then flare to yellow at 70% when a motion sensor (from a camera) detects a person, then after an interval returns to red-50%, and finally at sunrise just turns off. This I have failed so far. I set the “Schedule” via VOCOlinc app, but it didn’t stick to the schedule. I tried the “turn off” option in Homekit, but that turned off the light bulb altogether-no return to red-50%.

Nice. Woke-up kinda early to The TH-cams telling me to watch a new #homeautomation video. 😏
So. Do you think that #HomeKit will offer similar functionality for ‘conditions’ in future releases? IOS13?
While I understand that using a 3rd-party App isn’t really all that big of a whoop in the grand scheme, I just have issue with it being the necessity...
Perhaps (probably) I’m just too lazy, but it seems like a hassle/annoyance to have to use multiple Apps to configure what (I believe) is a function that would be commonly used scenario.
Maybe my expectations are too high?
Also - can you offer a reminder of the manufacturer of your motion sensors? I’ve been considering adding a motion sensor(s) and a water/leak sensor to my #smarthome - but don’t want to have to add another Bridge to the system...
I’ll likely just go with #Samsung #SmartThings, as they are supposed to work with the #LutronCaseta Bridge - but I’m open to other suggestions.
Oh. Yeah. Congrats on your 1500 subscribers!

I will be talking about motion sensors more in a future video but I use the Nest cameras as motion sensors (although don’t count on that for long given Google Nest) and I’ve recently been trying an Onvis motion sensor in this stair location. Onvis makes a Bluetooth HomeKit sensor that doesn’t require a hub.
So Apple officially supports this condition functionality in their API for developers, they just haven’t built it into their own app. It’s still pure HomeKit once it’s set up. But I understand it’s one more added bit of complexity.

    • @pghatak

      It can.
The trick is this is not done in the "automation" tab, but the settings of the sensor. For every sensor that you have set, go to that rooms tab.
Then you'd see the sensor icon on the top of that room. Press and hold - and the settings page will come up. Scroll all the way down and select "Status and Notifications". Now you can select "Notifications on this phone". By default this is turned off.
      I hope this helps.

@@EricWelander That's what I thought at first as well, but turns out that's not the case! When creating a new automation in the Home app on iOS 13, at the screen where you select which accessories to control, scroll all the way down to the bottom and there's an "Add Shortcut" option under "Advanced". This allows you to create HomeKit-specific shortcuts that run without a personal device!
Love your channel, BTW. Keep up the great videos!

Thanks Brian! That’s great added information! As a developer I’ve been using the betas for other projects but I need to dive into the home automation part of it more soon.

@@EricWelander You're very welcome! FWIW, I just verified that the Shortcut ran correctly even with my iOS 13 device being off the network (home hub is an Apple TV on the tvOS 13 beta).
Condition: When Basement Fan is turned on
Shortcut: Wait 5 seconds > If Basement Desk Light is Off, then set Basement Desk Light to 100% and blue > Otherwise, do nothing.

    God !
People are willing to give _access_ to their home information, including cameras to any corporation (Eve in this case) for a little convenience. *Homekit data are not encrypted !*

Can you turn the background music down please or turn it off altogether

Agree w/ Elie - the background music is too loud, and distracting.
