This is one of the times I feel the plot armour point is not fair. We see these characters withstand some crazy stuff and Lee was obviously not trying to kill Gaara. This was his first time using the 4th Gate in a real fight, so obviously his body was unprepared for using it as effectively as in Shippuden. At the end of the fight, Gaara was grounded and Lee could barely walk. It's obvious the guy whose jutsu can be used without moving would win in that position. Lee probably could've opened Gate 5, but this isn't supposed to be a death match, so he tried to only use the minimum power he needed.
Nah I really don't think Lee could have beat Gaara. If you consider how much further Gaara can still go and the abilities he doesn't use in this fight, Lee's loss was inevitable. He also had no reason to go beyond the fourth gate to fight Gaara so him using the fifth gate was purely a reckless decision. That's not a dig on Lee though, none of the other Genin in the room would have been able to beat Gaara either
@@VelvetAura Totally disagree, lee is by far the strongest genin, as the author choose (wrongly for the plot) to make him that way. He destroys gaara easily with the gates you can see that his power is way too strong and his speed... he is so fast that kakashi needed sharingan to see, others couldn't even see him. Quoting gaara's words " is that the moves of a human" being lost in the sauce against a way stronger opponent. I mean gaara was getting rolled every time lee was on the offense but he get saved miraculously everytime. The plot armor is really visible on this one and appears twice, first time is the substitution jutsu (which is kishimoto's most used plot device pre timeskip, this is not the unique case) on the omote renge. The second one if making it as if the lotus damage was just "fall damage" and just making him fall on sand would nullify that, while he punched and kicked gaara with crazy power that would have killed anyone, but hey that doesn't count obviously.

Lee is regarded as one of the greatest characters in anime. His arc is so awesome people conflate it with the purpose of the show itself. To persevere through the sheer brutality of life despite a mediocre existence is nothing short of inspirational. Lee's character is greater than almost every single anime protagonist, hell, almost any character in fiction. Lee is a character that is initially humorous but then becomes so incredibly serious at the same time and it resonates with anyone who has ever felt inadequate or struggled to become something better than they are. That's what makes this one of the greatest fights in anime. It just hits so goddamn hard.
It really shouldn’t surprise anyone. Lee is modeled after Bruce Lee. He’s one of my favorite characters. He’s just a bad mofo. He has a couple great fights. I love the sparring match between him and Naruto at the end of the series.
in the japanese dub the condition to take of the weights was to protect "the lives of a large group of people", so that would explain why lee didn't do so in the forest

That phrase “sometimes the surest way to hit something is stop trying to hit it” made no sense as a kid but I get it now. It’s like when you try hard at something, but sometimes the best thing is to walk away from it and return later. Somehow bam like magic you improve at it. I’ve experienced that many times with different things and I still don’t really understand it but it just is.
It's because humans are ritualistic. We do the same things often and don't realize it. When we're actively looking for thingswe are interrupting that pattern for a reason. But if we can't find something, we'll often run across it again if we just allow ourselves to do our patterns

I think what makes the lee vs gaara fight so emotional was how guy was willing to help lee become the best which both helped lee grow but also lead to his downfall causing him to push himself to the point where he ultimately destroyed his chances of becoming a ninja 😢

He didn't really need it in the Forest though, he didn't lose because he was too slow, but because he was unprepared for the Sound Trio's ninjutsu. Dosu was cooked if Zaku didn't create a cushion in the ground.
What I hate most about this fight is that Gaara's "sand armor" could never actually protect against the kind of blunt force Lee was putting out. Because the sand is making contact with his body, the force would still transfer through. The lotus technique where he was kicking Gaara into the air over and over, that by itself would have ruptured all the organs in his chest cavity and killed him.

I love it! This is my first time watching your channel and your mom is great! I watched all of Naruto and Shippuden with my mom aswell and it took us 3-4 years. Even during my military service time, she visited the city near where I was stationed for a week once (mostly for herself to get out of her work stress at the time and she loved that city). She took long walks through the old city and spent time reading the bible during the day and every evening I came over from my baracks, we got some asian food and we binched half of the war arc in shippuden in her hotel room in one week. Those were some great times. I moved out 2 years ago, but everey second or third sunday afternoon I visit and we keep watching Boruto now (and many other anime). Idk what it is with moms and anime, but it's a perfect match somehow, especially for the Naruto series.

To be honest, the dub isn't horrible, but certain character's mannerisms become exponentially more annoying when translated to English and paired with mediocre voice acting that is either over or underexaggerated or awkward. Naruto's saying "Believe it" is a little bit of a meme by itself, as it sounds suuuuper corny in English, but "Dattebayo" in the sub version sounds like it belongs and is actually a cherished part of the character, partly because the Japanese voice actors were absolutely perfect imo. It's hard to match the original in quality.
I personally think it’s more about which you watched first in some cases. When I watched sub, I couldn’t focus on anything else besides how much he said datebayo, and it got annoying. It’s way more corny in English, but it has some charm, and isn’t nearly as invasive imo. Don’t get me wrong, there are some trash English performances like konohamaru, kankuro, and ino, but itachi, tobi, and pains voices ALONE are good enough for all the bad ones!
@GoldFamilyReactions definitely which one you watched first. The sub is just better quality all around but I got used to the dub and associate the characters with their dub voices, so the dissonance of hearing a different voice is uncomfortable
@GoldFamilyReactions I watched mostly subs but I can't watch shows that I watched dubbed as subbed. I watched all of dbz and inuyasha dubbed so now I can't handle the sub voices because they just aren't what I've connected with the colors. It works the other way around also, can't watch dubs after watching all of it dubbed. This show though I started dubbed but early on switched to subbed and I can only watch subbed now. The only English voices I don't hate are guy and Lee because they just seem to really fit them with the cheesiness
Knowing Gaaras backstory and rewatching this, seeing how much people cared for Lee and him learning he's not untouchable/undefeatable anymore. That might be one of the greatest character development moves

Hyped? My man's, I subscribed just for this fight. Rock Lee standing back up with clouded over eyes was the exact second I knew I would watch anime for life. It came at the point I really needed it in middle school. Struggled mentally with esteem, and related to Lee's feelings (trade the jutsus for being on the spectrum though). 24 and the episode still makes me ugly cry every time I see it, but I've found a lot of strength since that first time.

I love how the running theme for Naruto is that the person who is looked down on can rise up and surprise you. Every character who is hated or mocked by people around them overcomes and shows that words of hate ARE words of ignorance. No spoilers from me, but I love that out of the 12, Lee is the first person Gara fights. I'm going to love watching you react to the introduction of a very ahem 😉 interesting teacher in the near future.

I have not read all of Kishimoto's interviews about his themes, but I have read as many as I could get my hands on. Based on his words, it seems as though the series message revolves around war and understanding. He took great inspiration from his Grandfather(who I believe is a veteran), who talks about past wars he survived. Tailed Beast are supposed to represent nuclear weapons. the "Cycle of Hatred" that was born from war is suppose to be an obstacle to understanding others. Naruto connects to and learns from/ teaches others using "Talk no Jutsu". You can find evidence of this theme through the reason Naruto created his ninja way(chapter 33 and 43) as well as the antagonist that reflects Naruto himself.

That phrase “sometimes the surest way to hit something is stop trying to hit it” made no sense as a kid but I get it now. It’s like when you try hard at something, but sometimes the best thing is to walk away from it and return later. Somehow bam like magic you improve at it. I’ve experienced that many times with different things and I still don’t really understand it but it just is.

It's because humans are ritualistic. We do the same things often and don't realize it. When we're actively looking for thingswe are interrupting that pattern for a reason. But if we can't find something, we'll often run across it again if we just allow ourselves to do our patterns

I think what makes the lee vs gaara fight so emotional was how guy was willing to help lee become the best which both helped lee grow but also lead to his downfall causing him to push himself to the point where he ultimately destroyed his chances of becoming a ninja 😢

What I hate most about this fight is that Gaara's "sand armor" could never actually protect against the kind of blunt force Lee was putting out. Because the sand is making contact with his body, the force would still transfer through. The lotus technique where he was kicking Gaara into the air over and over, that by itself would have ruptured all the organs in his chest cavity and killed him.

I love it! This is my first time watching your channel and your mom is great! I watched all of Naruto and Shippuden with my mom aswell and it took us 3-4 years. Even during my military service time, she visited the city near where I was stationed for a week once (mostly for herself to get out of her work stress at the time and she loved that city). She took long walks through the old city and spent time reading the bible during the day and every evening I came over from my baracks, we got some asian food and we binched half of the war arc in shippuden in her hotel room in one week. Those were some great times.
I moved out 2 years ago, but everey second or third sunday afternoon I visit and we keep watching Boruto now (and many other anime). Idk what it is with moms and anime, but it's a perfect match somehow, especially for the Naruto series.

This is so sweet, naruto has made me cry so many times, seeing you watch it with your mother is beautiful
To be honest, the dub isn't horrible, but certain character's mannerisms become exponentially more annoying when translated to English and paired with mediocre voice acting that is either over or underexaggerated or awkward. Naruto's saying "Believe it" is a little bit of a meme by itself, as it sounds suuuuper corny in English, but "Dattebayo" in the sub version sounds like it belongs and is actually a cherished part of the character, partly because the Japanese voice actors were absolutely perfect imo. It's hard to match the original in quality.
I personally think it’s more about which you watched first in some cases. When I watched sub, I couldn’t focus on anything else besides how much he said datebayo, and it got annoying. It’s way more corny in English, but it has some charm, and isn’t nearly as invasive imo. Don’t get me wrong, there are some trash English performances like konohamaru, kankuro, and ino, but itachi, tobi, and pains voices ALONE are good enough for all the bad ones!
@GoldFamilyReactions definitely which one you watched first. The sub is just better quality all around but I got used to the dub and associate the characters with their dub voices, so the dissonance of hearing a different voice is uncomfortable
@GoldFamilyReactions I watched mostly subs but I can't watch shows that I watched dubbed as subbed. I watched all of dbz and inuyasha dubbed so now I can't handle the sub voices because they just aren't what I've connected with the colors. It works the other way around also, can't watch dubs after watching all of it dubbed. This show though I started dubbed but early on switched to subbed and I can only watch subbed now. The only English voices I don't hate are guy and Lee because they just seem to really fit them with the cheesiness
They could do really good english dubs though if they weren't so cheap

Knowing Gaaras backstory and rewatching this, seeing how much people cared for Lee and him learning he's not untouchable/undefeatable anymore. That might be one of the greatest character development moves

Hyped? My man's, I subscribed just for this fight. Rock Lee standing back up with clouded over eyes was the exact second I knew I would watch anime for life.
It came at the point I really needed it in middle school. Struggled mentally with esteem, and related to Lee's feelings (trade the jutsus for being on the spectrum though).
24 and the episode still makes me ugly cry every time I see it, but I've found a lot of strength since that first time.

I love how the running theme for Naruto is that the person who is looked down on can rise up and surprise you. Every character who is hated or mocked by people around them overcomes and shows that words of hate ARE words of ignorance. No spoilers from me, but I love that out of the 12, Lee is the first person Gara fights. I'm going to love watching you react to the introduction of a very ahem 😉 interesting teacher in the near future.
LOOOL I gotta fess up. In my edited version (the one we watch) I took out some of the overly “interesting” parts in order to protect my dear mother. 😅 definitely didnt remove it completely, but they went a lil overboard at some points 😬 should still be tons of fun either way🤠🤠
I have not read all of Kishimoto's interviews about his themes, but I have read as many as I could get my hands on.
Based on his words, it seems as though the series message revolves around war and understanding.
He took great inspiration from his Grandfather(who I believe is a veteran), who talks about past wars he survived.
Tailed Beast are supposed to represent nuclear weapons. the "Cycle of Hatred" that was born from war is suppose to be an obstacle to understanding others. Naruto connects to and learns from/ teaches others using "Talk no Jutsu".
You can find evidence of this theme through the reason Naruto created his ninja way(chapter 33 and 43) as well as the antagonist that reflects Naruto himself.

I think in the original Dub he says "I thought I could only remove them when protecting a large group of very important people." The reason he didn't use it before was because he didn't deem the situation important enough.
Damn I cried at the end. Gets me every time. I always watch Rock Lee vs Gaara when I feel low or defeated in life. Just like Lee I had no talent or good at anything I tried, but just like him working hard paid off and then I showed the world what I'm truly made off.
