Oooo I feel your pain. This is an old school game. You have to save manually. On the up side, you'll never make that same mistake again!

If you want more money for better gear, capture is definitely the most profitable occupation that I'm aware of. I think you need to upgrade a building or something to store them beyond your fleet.

You have to upgrade your hanger. it is auto upgraded to store 1 ship but I think you can use hangers at other cities to store other ships. At least that is how it seems.
