    Had mine 16 years and took it to a friend's house who uses a cordless Dyson. The crap I pulled out of her rugs left her gobsmacked. No machine can compare to it, especially for air purification.

    The older powerhead on the rainbow has a beater bar and would have cleaned the carpet in 2 passes. The filter on the Dyson will plug with fine dust and won''t pick up anything. Need air flow going out so dirt can go into the vacuum. PLugged filter will prevent anything being vacuumed up. The Rainbow will never lose air flow. My rainbow model D3C and is 40 years old. Still works great

    I miss my rainbows. They are awesome deep clenlaning, and being very versatile. We bought a Kirby Avalir brand new September 2017. It's cleans very very well, not not as easy to get around like the rainbows where. It can be a pain in the butt hooking up the hose and converting it down. Takes some work to do that but once you have it done it still cleans very very well. Versatility hands down rainbow.

    After rewatching, neither one did a very good job. Probably need to vacuum in more than one direction, and to go a little slower. Regardless of the vacuum you own, you can improve performance by slowing down to give the machine enough time to do the job.

      I want you to know that despite that Dyson having automatic height adjustment, when you recline the machine back the pivoting sole plate tends to tilt up off the floor, which is why the machine doesn't do too well a job! So when he was using the Dyson it's cleaner head wasn't sealed to the floor properly and the brush bar wasn't actaully beating the carpet, therefore it was just gliding across the floor. So what I do is after I recline it back I kick the sole plate down with my foot, so the machine is correctly sealed to the floor so it will actually clean it and not just glide across it.

    • @gpelite6616
      @gpelite6616 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +zmanifest This unit doesn't have a true automatic height adjustment like the newer ones (or you wouldn't have to use your foot in the first place to adjust it). It will not self level, which was always an issue with the dyson true uprights. It will always "kick up" at an angle no matter the adjustment. In the video it is on the lowest adjustable setting for the ribbed carpet it is working on. I couldn't go lower without readjusting it every single pass. The high-pile verses low-pile test is to show the transition issues and how it "resets" to only the highest pile. I could have put it on bare floor setting like some people do but then you stress out the motor and risk breaking belts and damaging the brush bar/clutch prematurely.
      The issue with the newer ones is they are slightly less powerful at beating with brush bars that are more accommodating to any type of carpet/bare floor making them less effective across the range in carpet only so I wanted to use a decent brush bar that was comparable to Rainbow during the test.

    • @gpelite6616
      @gpelite6616 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but that was not the issue I was addressing in my previous. This Dyson will not go lower than the highest surface you are on. It doesn't auto adjust or have a spring action like the new ones to adjust as you travel over other surfaces. Therefore, it does not have automatic height adjustment as you stated in your original comment. This performed as designed, I can't force the brush to the floor on every pass, that is above and beyond the normal intended usage and beyond the scope of the video.

    It's funny how personal people take criticism of their vacuum cleaners. I have an 80's vintage Rainbow that I like better than the bagless and bagged ones I've hated over the years. I don't mind dumping dirty water and I really appreciate how well the Rainbow works, how the dust in the house is decreased, and how the powerhead can sneak deep into little places a one piece could never dream of entering. The Dyson may work well but it can't go into places the Rainbow can.

      Ya, the dirty water aspect kind of sucks - but it's nice to know you aren't breathing all of that in. My parents had one for as long as I can remember, and I recently took the plunge after my old cheap Bissell took a crap (it did outlive its lifespan to be fair.)

      gpelite just learning, still watching your other rainbow comparison. I want easier quicker to use, but have to keep using riainbow overall because of severe allergies to dust mites. So, I find I am avoiding vacuuming because so much hassle, but definitely my e rainbow does really good. I don't know which dyson to get for a quicki second and to keep upstairs, only taking rainbow up there occasionally. I guess I'm shopping for a second one, but want best filtering and suction because I get so sick when vacuumed with regular vacuums. I even vacuume with a face mask and shower after vacuuming. My hands itch cleaning and doing main ten ever, so that I have to wear gloves. Crazy, uh? Thanks for your information. 👍🏻 any advice ppreciated.

    • @gpelite6616
      @gpelite6616 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well it sounds like you need something with good sealed parts and a high HEPA rated filter. All vacs are going to kick up some of that stuff, even rainbows, but the HEPA on both the Rainbow and Dyson mitigate the exhaust output from contributing to allergies. Cheaper vacs use non-HEPA rated filters and their parts have no gaskets in the airflow which allows blow by into the air unfiltered (even if they have a HEPA somewhere in the design). My old Shark and Bissell had bad blow by but both had HEPA filters. Depending on your floors and types of carpeting you still need a powered brush bar for carpets. Lots of good brands out there for spares. Personally, I know what I get with Dyson, Miele, Rainbow, etc. Good design, airflow that is sealed through the entire unit, and a HEPA with a high micron filter rating that works but doesn't impede power.

    • @InLawsAttic
      @InLawsAttic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So, I need heap and a good brush, and an easy to use in between my rainbow. Also the carpet we are fixing to rent is a Burber throughout, so hope my rainbow brush is not going to mess that up. What model dyson or any vac do you recommend?

    • @gpelite6616
      @gpelite6616 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Berber is high traffic carpet, really hard to mess it up :) It is made for hard usage so there is little the brushes will do to it unless you have loose fibers or a very low grade version.
      I personally like the upright dysons, not a huge fan of the ball ones, but that is just me. I think they all do a nice job if you get the full size versions. Really look at the brush bars on them though, determine if they will work for the floors you will be on. A lot of the new dysons have a soft brush bar section and more mild brushes for hard floors to be "all surface" where on the old ones you turned the bar off for suction only.
      You lose some carpet brush points on the bar to compensate for being "all surface". It doesn't beat the carpets as much but they do have stronger motors now and good airflow ratings with their auto-leveling head (not too dramatic but you may need slower passes to get the same effect). I prefer a rougher brush and beefier beater bar to get my carpets cleaner in less passes. I buy special tools for hard floors and laminate and find the regular suction only works OK. I always need to go back and wipe down / treat hardwood.
      All depends on what you got going on in the house to use it on, time, and what you prefer. Hope this helps!

    great review on those 2...and yea the rainbow is really amazing but the price for it just isn't, maybe if I win the lottery, lol,...... but so super you found one used on Craigslist....... I already have too many vacuum cleaners ...I have an old Bissell Powerforce Helix, Shark Navigator Deluxe (NV42), Numatics Henry and the Dyson Ball Animal and all of them get totally smoked by my super hygienic Miele U1 cat and dog and that is also a very fun vacuum, they are not too loud yet have strong cleaning power, its like driving an Audi R8 trough your living room,.... Yeah I need to get my buying guide together, got a few PMs about it now. I would never buy a rainbow new but boy is it a fun thing to have. Miele is top notch as well, but bags always get me down, being cheap and such. I know I would overuse the bags like I did growing up. Much like the Kirby, Miele is mentioned a lot so I will have to eventually get my hands on one to fix and test out to do a review someday.

Reviews are top notch from what I've scene, they offer a 10 year warranty and if you really shop you can find one for a better price. • @benshuetrim9640
    @benshuetrim9640 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Those dc7's are antiquated junk however to be fair the beater bar didn't have time to lower itself and adjust to carpet pile height until the beginning of the third run. It then misses half of the mat as it continues to play catch-up with beater bar adjusting...like my Sebo x4 "auto" junk that filters really well but the constant upping and downing of the beater bar is a real piss off when you're trying to get a carpet thoroughly dry vacuumed. My Kirby is the freight train when it comes to getting the job done though.

    • @gpelite6616
      @gpelite6616 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This mode of DC14 does not have and auto-level or auto-adjust bar. The bar is always on if the switch is selected for carpet. The front lip of the unit (which helps mostly for the bare floor mode) is what is angled up over this high ridge carpet and I agree it's not a fantastic design. Dyson added spring tension on newer models but it doesn't completely solve the issue. Kirby's shear weight of the machine pushes the bar into any surface with more force, but I've noticed they can't always be used on the more delicate carpets. All have strengths and weaknesses.

    I love the rainbow just because it qualifies as a air purifier. When you can have a vacuum that purifies the air at the same time!? why have two separate systems when you can just have 1!
    Plus since it’s water and pretty much EVERYTHING attaches to water... you can add triethylene glycol solution which is the same that hospitals use. It’s great to sanitize and deodorize the air... with the certified HEPA in the back.
    I’m jus sayin

      Zaka Pentax well you have the water... which pretty much catches just about everything and then the Hepa filter in the back. Why would you need more?

    • @ralphw7454
      @ralphw7454 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zaka Pentax i already have a real air purifier on the 3rd floor. While this i can clean and stand alone on the first floor. So it counts as 2 filters, still just as good for any other filter.
      We have lots of smoke from wildfires right now in California and compared to my other expensive air filter. This does great but even better job because it catches everything in the water... then with the extra on the back.

    • @ralphw7454
      @ralphw7454 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zaka Pentax ALSO... with covid running rampant right now. I can put a disinfectant in the water so as it sanitizes the air as well.... so that’s another plus.
      I have the triethylene glycol solution from rainbow. It’s the same chemical that hospitals use. It’s great for sanitizing and deodorizing the air.... so yeah sure it doesn’t have THAT MANY filters compared to another purifier. But why would you when it has WATER as an actual filter. Plus an added HEPA on the back.

    There is NO comparison. RAINBOW WINS HANDS DOWN. I'm almost 60. My ma had one when I was a child. We had the cleanest house in the entire neighborhood.

      Therese Masi Rainbows last so long you can pass them down to other family members. Which other vacs can do that.

      I would disagree. In real testing by the carpet and rug institute and Consumer reports, the Rainbow did a rather mediocre job on carpet.

      @jmg1232 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Roy Mazingo The first link is from the Carpet and Rug institute: carpet-rug.org/testing/seal-of-approval-program/certified-vacuums/. Please note that the Rexair manufactured Rainbow vacuum achieves "Silver" status for carpet cleaning. Unless you subscribe to Consumer Reports, you can't actually see their ratings. You may be able to access them at a public library. The Rainbow E-2 series was the last Rainbow tested by Consumer Reports, so we will have to wait on updated results. The highest rated canister vacuum in Consumer Reports is currently the Miele C3 Marin - which is certified HEPA and is completely sealed. The Europeans do a better job of certifying the entire unit as HEPA rather than just tossing a HEPA filter on the end of the exhaust. Certainly the Rainbows have made improvements over the years, and they don't do a terrible job - just average which I find to be a problem for such an expensive vacuum cleaner. I will reiterate that no portable household vacuum is worth $3000. However, if you have one that you like, I'm perfectly happy for you. That said, the engineers that design the power nozzles should be fired for incompetence. They kill the air flow with poor design.

      @Roy Mazingo Hey Roy, if you have a Rainbow and it works well for you great. Personally, I think $3000 is way too much for a portable vacuum. heck it's more expensive than a washer and dryer. It's more expensive than many built in vacuums. I hate the DTD sales model. I don't like letting a creepy person or any stranger in my house. It can be difficult to get them out of your house too. It's not only the price though. I don't like how they ask you for names of friends/family that they can use as sales leads. I would never give out contact info for my friends/neighbors. It's a decent product, and IF (big IF) you follow directions very carefully it can last a long time (unless the electronics fails). I don't like the return policies - you generally have 72 hours to return the product for a refund. I don't like the way they tie people down to long term contracts where they end up paying over $4000 for a Rainbow on credit (18-21% interest). Much of the sales pitch is deception. The warranty is a little sneaky too, since it's warrantied to the distributor rather than the consumer. I like that they are a US company, but I despise how they are sold.

    • @jmg1232
      @jmg1232 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Roy Mazingo I appreciate that it's a difficult job to sell a $3000 vacuum. I also appreciate that it's hard to get into people's homes to do a sales pitch. With all of the uncertainty in the world right now, I can't imagine it's too easy to find buyers. While it's nice to test out the Rainbow in your own home, I am opposed to the DTD model. I like the Costco model. You buy at Costco at a good price, you try it out in your own home, and if you don't like it you return it within a reasonable amount of time. Sure some people can get the Rainbow for free by helping to sell to 12 friends/family members, but in return other people are paying more to cover their free Rainbow. My friends would never pay that much for a vacuum regardless of how nice it might be. Had I wished to try out a water filtration vacuum, Costco had a Sirena for about $600 (one time deal about a year ago, no longer available). While it may not be built as well as a Rainbow, it was about 1/5 the price with a 10 year warranty. I wish you well.

      Can I ask what features the Kirby g5 has that you prefer? I was offered a trade of a g5 for a purple version of this model. I've come across a few kirbys but never bit the bullet. (perhaps for the channel someday I may)

      gpelite I actually own an Kirby Avalir bought it last year new, owned that exact dyson he used for this video I couldn't sell it fast enough, plastic overpriced junk! Kirby makes a great product that will last you a lifetime. The only way to see if you love it is to test one out

    • @qwp0983
      @qwp0983 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      At the end of the video you talk about why you own both vacuums. A Kirby does what your Dyson does, but does it like your Rainbow. I feel it may be superior to a Rainbow on carpet because the heavy motor unit helps seal the nozzle to the floor and drive the brushroll deeper into the carpet, regardless of pile height. They are self propelled, making them easier to push. They are very easy to service, too. A Rainbow might be more convenient for attachments and above floor cleaning, except maybe for stairs or cars.

    • @gpelite6616
      @gpelite6616 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I totally agree the Kirby metal head will really get down hard for the weight of it and take the brush reach factor out more so. You can get extended hoses for the Rainbow for car and stairs which make it even more useful. Personally I have 3 vacs right now, and I love my simple DC26 or Rainbow for the car. The house is a toss up depending on task. The reason I don't own a Kirby as part of my personal kit yet is the weight and bags. I really do lift and move my vacs a lot and I need hose attachments for every room. Growing up I dropped our household one on my foot, so yeah there is that lol. I'm sure I will get around to getting one to fix someday and really torture test it. They are good machines overall.

      I actually had a kirby before I got a rainbow. I cleaned my floors ALOT the night before my demo and made sure we stayed out of the house until my demo. I wanted it clean. During my demo he got up SO much dirt from AFTER the Kirby. He even had me do 52 strokes with kirby, to represent vaccuming for a year, assuming you vac once a week. After me vaccuming the night before, and then the 52 stroke on top of that all with my kirby, he did TWO strokes with the rainbow over the exact same spot that I did the 52 and the amount of dirt he got up blew my mind. Kirby really really sucks.

    You made more passes with the Dyson than the Rainbow. Not a true comparison.

    • @gpelite6616
      @gpelite6616 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate your feedback :) The Rainbow finished the job in less passes than the dyson, I did until job completion not 1:1 passes as you pointed out. The comparison is on getting the job done efficiently and is supposed to demonstrate that 6 passes to 4 to achieve relative levels of maximum cleaning potential given similar messes on varied carpet pile. The Rainbow design was better suited and more efficient for the test even if I gave the Dyson more passes to achieve a real world clean expectation by a potential end user. The extra passes themselves illustrate the point I wanted to show and I'll drive that point home more if I do another similar video in the future.

    Having the rainbow, i can give a honest opinion on the Rainbow. First, the Rainbow experience has to do with the collection system ,not the suction. The Rainbow sucks up dirt and stuff exactly the same as any other good vacuum cleaner, it isn't stronger, better, when it comes to sucking up dirt. The Rainbow has a unique water collection system which means instead of going in an old bag, or into a bagless container like current vacuum cleaners, the dirt goes into water. It doesn't suck up more, it doesn't clean better, it doesn't outperform a good regular vacuum. What it does is makes the collection cleaner, you don't have powder mess like a bagless container has. It also is more time consuming changing the water in the Rainbow than emptying a bagless container, but is isn't as messy. is it worth the price? of course not, The only thing about the Rainbow is the collection system, which is a water tank. The ONLY reason to get a Rainbow over a great regular vacuum cleaner is if you are trying to keep the dust down afterwards. It isn't worth the price, its a "gimmick" vacuum cleaner and regular ones do the exact same thing for 1/3rd the price, and that is if you buy a great regular vacuum. When they started with Rainbows they were thousands of dollars and you were a fool to buy one, sadly many fell for the gimmick. Currently I think they are more reasonable at 500+ dollars, which i consider a good price for the vacuum, but also remember there are plenty of regular bagless ones for that price which are just as good. So decide if you want one ONLY because of the water based tank collection system, which is more time consuming than other vacuuums having to change and empty the water, but keeps the dust down, you won't have a dusty time with a Rainbow. My mom has had one for about 5 years, we laughed when she paid thousands for it, but its her money. My 250 dollar dirt devil full sized vacuum does just as good a job, and the bagless container can be opened and emptied in about 5 seconds and put back in. Can't do that with the Rainbow.

      it also depends on what one calls 'does a good job'. bagged vacuums DONT clean nearly as well as this water based system. Water based ones keep you from having to buy bags....don't blow dust BACK into the room like bagged ones do after 5-10 minutes of use (dust clogs the smallest pores of the bag and then its blown out from continued use). Check your exhaust on a bagged system with a strong light and you'll see it coming out! IF....your goal is clean as much trash/dirt etc from your carpet/upholstery, then the water based systems blow the bagged ones away...UNLESS, you are changing your bags EVERY single time you use the vacuum...and that assumes you are vacuuming for 10 mins-is or less..

      james friel Raimbows are amazing vacs and worth the money. Yes they are very expensive but they also almost last forever. U can buy them used which is a great deal. Dyson seems to be making some improvements but still I think Rainbow is the best. All other vacuums are garbage and a waste of money.

      Tyler Shell Easy there The new Dyson V10 is something new and something Rainbow cannot do because they stick with what works. Dyson is doing new things and cordless will only improve from the V10. I am looking to get a V10 absolute to compliment my rainbow.

      I will put my rainbow against any vac,bag vacuums let dust back in your house because the air got to Go somewhere that's why you get that bad odor when you turn it on. Rainbow has been out since 1930s as a air purifier then in the 60s they added the vacuum part so it now does more. Most rainbow vac still work over 30 years so how many vacuums did you replace lets say 10 years rainbo gets better and better
