Seems like a terrible strategy to play the next machine over when waiting for a Hand Pay. These machines are connected, so you are essentially betting against yourself. It's rare that more than one of these machines will be paying at the same time.
Sometimes it works, other times, this!
Yup seen a lady hit a 5 grand jackpot on dancing drums and knew after that the chances of winning on the 5 dancing drums machines they had at my local casino was pretty low after that.
