Hi, it’s Patrik Hutzel from intensivecarehotline.com with another quick tip for families in intensive care.
So, today’s tip is about, “A slow recovery in intensive care after cardiac arrest and anoxic brain injury.” So, we have many families in intensive care coming to us that say things like, “Look, my mom, my dad, my spouse has gone into intensive care after a cardiac arrest. They had a prolonged downtime.” Downtime is the technical term for no oxygen to the brain during cardiac arrest, during CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). And they say, “Look, they’re not waking up. It takes a long time.” ICUs are putting pressure on us saying, “Look, we either need to proceed to end-of-life because it’s not in the “best interest” for their loved ones to survive.” Whereas in reality, patients after an anoxic brain injury simply need time to recover, to wake up.
And also, the question that you need to ask yourself is, what is quality of life? What is it? It’s a subjective measure, a subjective term, not an objective measure. Quality of life for you might be very different compared to what I perceive as acceptable for quality of life.
And in many situations, you also need to think about the quality of end-of-life. If someone after cardiac arrest and anoxic brain injury wants to approach end-of-life, maybe it’s part of their advanced care plan, then you need to think about the quality of end-of-life. Do you want to end life in intensive care on the intensive care team’s terms? Or do you want end-of-life, for example, at home, in a family environment with services like Intensive Care at Home?

Thanks for making these video's, i really appreciate your work 🙏. We are currently in a similar situation with my dad having a cardiac arrest and and being in a coma state for the past month and half. He had a downtime of roughly 10-15 mins but we arent willing to let go. Didnt receive much support from hospital staff, just the same things that you mentioned. From day one to today we have seen many small improvements and just hoping for the best recovery possible. Thanks again for the info and resources ❤️

@marshathomas6422 Hey hes okay. Some more improvements from then, we have him at home but hes still in bed.. he smiles and reacts to everyones voice. Few things to look into that id recommend; hyperbaric oxygen therapy, acupressure, ambien. Do some research and i hope for the best for your loved one. We have only done some acupressure btw, and have been trying to get the drs to get him on ambien hopefully 10mg 3x a day, definitely something to look into.. just the Healthcare system in Canada is so shit and slow.

@hellokittydimaggio At home doing slightly better! Thanks for asking, gets challenging to manage but so much better than being at a care home. Trying everything possible to help him improve.

ty so much! ur videos have given me so much insight and hope. my daughters dad who was my highschool sweetheart and who i love VERY much. we spend every day together.. aspirated on easter causing anoxic brain injury. i administered cpr as soon as i realized there was a problem.. and out of the.. prob 15-20 times ive had to do cpr in my life.. theres only been 1 who passed and 1 besides my daughters dad.. that had brain damage that anyone found at least.. he was storming thurs and fri.. a little fever last couple days and no response to nail beds etc but last night after changing propofol to precedex or however u spell it.. and weining the fentanyl.. when i started talking to him he started slightly moving arms and fingers and mouth.. then at one point it looked like he was trying to cry. mouth turned down, eyebrows furrowed, and nose flared.. im praying hes going to be ok. i recommended ur help to his parents. ❤

My sister suffered cardiac arrest and was without oxygen for about 30 mins. She only has some brain stem activity. Does she have any chance at all of recovery? After 2 plus weeks, her eyes just give a blank stare. No reaction to anything.
