- In the winter, between 40,000 and 50,000 sandhill cranes migrate to the southeastern Arizona area. The cranes typically arrive around October and depart around mid-February, with some remaining until mid-March.
Two of the best places in Arizona to see sandhill cranes are Whitewater Draw, northeast of Douglas, and Willcox Playa, an ancient, closed bin lake bed near Willcox. In both locations, the red-headed wonders take off around sunrise and return midday, after spending the morning feeding on insects, lizards, aquatic plants, rodents and snakes. They can also be seen in fields along Highway 191 and north of interstate 10 in Wilcox, Arizona, that have been harvested, where they feed on grain and corn that has been dropped during harvesting
They also stop at other locations, including:
• Twin Lakes Birding and Wildlife Area: A great place to rest and feed
• Cochise Lake: Located south of Willcox
• APECO Apache Generating Station: Located in Cochise
• Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area: Located near McNeal
• Safford Valley-Duncan: Home to nearly 4,000 cranes
• Bonita: Home to fewer than 300 cranes
The best time to view the cranes is during the 30 minutes before and after sunrise, when they fly off to feed. The cranes are known for their distinctive calls and synchronized flights.
