Mlp is making some really unique morals lately. I never expected a moral about how some people need help but aren't able to ask for it, and being a good friend means helping them without making them ask first. She helped them without forcing them to swallow their pride.

Notice that none of the yaks tried to stop Pinkie from helping here. They didn't _ask_ her to help, but they weren't against her doing it on her own. It took me until the third time I was watching this scene to realize its hidden importance.
Some people said this episode was boring...Yes it was...But I love Pinkie Pie so it makes it a little more enjoyable. Also too I am not sure if I want to have a Pony OC or a Yak one.

Your history buff friend completely missed the mark with Yaks. Vikings, really? If anything, Yaks are a parody mixture of Mongols (and other steppe peoples) and Russians.
And Yak episodes are not wasted potential - they actually show how to approach foreign cultures, in a way. You do not imitate the culture of your visitors - they didn't come to see you fail at reproducing their way of life (some would even take offense), they came to see how you do things in your country. I think that's an important lesson for American and Canadian children especially, to be proud of your customs, however young they may be in comparison. Too many struggle with the idea that there's no American or Canadian culture and come to despise what folklore they actually have - and that's a damn shame.
And this episode shows that you have to modify your approach when you're in a different culture. When in Rome, do as Romans do. Yaks are too prideful to ask for help, so help them without asking. It's not too different from some cultures see leaving tips for waiters and bartenders as insulting.
Sorry for a wall of text. In short, those who dislike Yak episodes can't see things from a different perspective.
I think they meant wasted potential from a lore perspective. They could have added a new, solid, and really interesting new race and culture to the lore but what we got was a violent race of brutes that are very hard to like and lacked anything interesting about them until this episode came out. The race was wasted potential, not the episodes and morals.
I feel like they fixed a lot of the problems in this episode though. I actually found the yaks likeable now, and it cemented them as more than just a violent group of tantrum throwers.
I, on the other hand, liked them instantly as I assumed that they might be the dwarves of the setting. Their temper was in line with the environment they lived in. Their uncouth abrasiveness is what made them fun to watch. The probable reason why most people disliked the Yaks was that they were violent, brutish males, while the same traits in Gilda, a female gryphon, ironically made the fandom fall in love with her, in spite of literally no lore about gryphons in her episode. A case of waifus before husbandos, if you will.
It's a bloody shame that Diamond Dogs seem to be a forgotten part of the lore in the show. I want the not-Orcs/Goblins back.
Yeah each culture have different customs that has to be understood or get the right gist. In the Yaks' case, the Yaks' don't ask for help BUT won't stop help being done, AND they'll be grateful for it especially if it really helped. They do things on their own, so others must do it on their own initiative.

I saw Yaks as extremely patriotic, to the point where thy would destroy things if they think that their culture is represented poorly.

well not really Viking Style, this is true they live in mud houses but not Circle houses but instead longhouses. The yaks light Style is more like tribal people in Finland and Russia and further west around 600 800 AD.

It's a good, fun episode that I thoroughly enjoyed. It has two tiny issues, though. First, some of the dialogue feels a bit stiff, which is probably due to the new writer. Hopefully she improves with that. Secondly, this episode really didn't need a conflict. The conflict, as well as its result and moral weren't bad, but felt a bit forced and unnecessary. Sometimes it's just better to have a nice, slice-of-life episode without a conflict, where it's just about the main characters in an unique (or even a regular daily) situation, with maybe some lore exploration. I feel like that's the one thing MLP needs to change about itself; it needs to drop this idea that every episode/story needs a conflict. This episode would've probably been better, or at least as good, if it was just Pinkie hanging out, having fun with and learning about the Yaks.
Dang, I was hoping we wouldn't have to wait for e12 and 13. XD Oh well. I totally understand you wanting to wait to release them. I'm just really glad you watched them early so you wouldn't get nailed with the inevitable spoilers. I'm hoping you'll still react to some stuff in the mid-season hiatus, such as the EQG specials (I believe either all three are out officially now or two are and the third hits this weekend) or maybe even some fandom stuff. You should consider checking out "A Different View of History" and "A Different View of Reality" by killme2paza. The first one is an interesting animation and the second is really awesome. Together the two are shorter than an episode so it's not too much time involved. Also, if you do react to them, make sure to have subtitles on during the first video. It relays some info that's not readily apparent in the video.
Actually, I'm taking the hiatus as a chance to watch the neglected non-pony stuff I've had on my list for a long time.
I'll be watching an anime called Overlord,
then maybe I'll react to season 4 of Steven Universe (though you won't see those reactions for a while)
Too long to explain why, but it will make sense when I eventually post those.

With all due respect your friend was being extremely petty. Regardless of being a history buff or anything else, you SHOULD NOT take ONE instance in the show that seriously all because it didn't give you what you wanted.... from secondary characters? MLP can have its deep moments for sure, but was he really surprised or hurt that they decided to give the Yaks a simplistic attitude and culture? You can't expect MLP to give you profound conflicts, lessons, and characters every single time. One of the biggest strength of this show is turning simplistic or cliche characters and/or plots into looking something more than they initially are. I'll agree that the Yaks weren't that likable or fleshed-out in their first appearance, but they still provided some entertainment which was still somewhat interesting seeing furthermore how they would interact with a culture that's drastically different from theirs as well as piquing curiosity in wanting to see more of their cultural background, despite it looking a little too simplistic at face value. You can HAVE simple and cliche things in a show as long as you at least try to furnish it with your unique charm and style to make it not only fun to watch, but interesting as well; that's one of the things MLP knows how to do right.
Your friend is most certainly entitled to his opinion, but I surely can't respect his viewpoint concerning not just the Yaks but the show as well.
I don't care for the Yaks but their episodes haven't been terrible. The first one was actually pretty cool.
Side note, when is the US continuing with MLP?

10 is undeniably a fun episode and it really is great but it doesn't have the same emotional pull. In any case, I was far more impressed by Starlight swapping the princess' cutie marks than by Daybreaker. But everyone seems obsessed by the latter.
yes i noticed that obsessed part too an that's why i mentioned it was not the case for me. I am not the emotional type anymore but i still liked the episode a lot.
13 is better then 10. (At least to me personally). 10 is my second favorite of the season though.
This was an okay episode, although not one of my favorites; compared to the other episodes we've had this season this is one of the weaker ones in my opinion. Pinkie Pie was great in this, it's just, I don't know. The lesson seemed off; like what was the lesson? Help others even when they don't ask for help or want help? That seems rather messed up in my opinion, but I don't know; maybe I'm reading it wrong. I know some people consider Fluttershy Leans in is the weakest episode this season, but I personally think it's this episode, Pinkie was great in this, just the lesson seemed off to me in my opinion. But still, great reaction and can't wait for more! XD.
There wasn't a lesson really, this was just a case of Pinkie being close enough to the Yaks to understand that even though they won't ASK for help, they would still APPRECIATE any help given. It was a culture thing, and Pinkie was very respectful of their culture, which she got recognition for at the end. It was a VERY specific situation.
Well if there was a lesson it came close to help others even if they don't ask for or want help. (That's just how I read it). But yeah I understand where you're coming from as well. Pinkie Pie was amazing in this episode, I'm still not a huge fan of it though. Although I loved how you said the word avalanche and then they started an avalanche, that was just great/bad timing. XD.

So many yaks yaking about this episode...
I found this episode boring. The yaks being stubborn gets repetitive. Pinkie Pie is a lot of fun. The ending is kind of weird.
This was a nice pleasant episode.
It's better than 12, but not nearly as good as 13.
All three episodes were highly enjoyable, a very rewarding marathon to sit through.
If season 7's second half is as good as the first half was, then this will be nailed on for my favourite season so far.
For me, personally, this already became best season with episode 7.
Episode 10 hammered that home.
And Episode 13 cemented its place.
I think it's already the best season so far even just with half of it. And i am thinking that the second part of the season will add even more to it.
Wait just to see if I got this cleared up, you like this episode more then episode 12? This episode felt a little messed up in my opinion. Pinkie Pie was amazing in this, just the lesson and everything else seemed off to me. But yeah I think this season will become my second favorite season, with season 5 as my favorite. (My favorite episode from season 5 being Amending Fences).

And I saw the trailer on my own. I won't be reacting to the movie, I'll be seeing it in the cinema.
This episode could be a good "Helping a friend in need, not in his demand" lesson, only the writer somehow decided to reach the next level, which makes it a little confusing and controversial. Let's do a recap:
Pinkie just came to their country for a day at most, saw one (shitty) part of their culture, then immediately decided "their culture sucks, let's do it our way", even those Yaks said no, she still did it regardless, and Yaks thank her for that in the end------it feels like watching people from Afghanistan or Syria thank America or Russia for invading their homes and destroy their culture. Maybe this works out okay for Equestria, but in reality where every culture sucks in their own way, Replacing one with another is not exactly a fine opinion.
Thus makes it the most hard-to-rate episode for me..Please tell me I'm thinking too much.

She didn't decide that their "culture sucks, let's do it our way".
She loves and respects their culture. That's why it meant so much for her to be an "honorary Yak".
And as the episode proved at the end, they were always willing to accept the help.
It's just that it's Yak culture to NOT ASK for it. In this one specific instance.
Even while hatching the sneak plan, Pinkie was adamant that the mane six NOT bring along pony stuff, which showed that she was still being culturally sensitive towards the Yaks.
As the Prince said at the end, Pinkie truly understood and respected the Yaks, which is why
her plan was a good thing.
They didn't "replace" any culture. No Yak traditions were removed or altered in any way.
They literally just helped them move the snow. Which they appreciated.
but isn't altering their way of living eventually leads to altering culture? Cause Yaks' stubborn and durability are pretty much determined by their harsh living environment (and way of life), now that the environment had a better solution, wouldn't they just accept the help every year since thus become similar to ponies' way?

Their way of living wasn't really altered.
They've never had a situation like this before, so it was more of an allowed exception.
They don't need help every year, this avalanche was a freak accident.
Multiple re-watches clearly show that the Prince was making things up on the spot to save face.
And as I said, it's only against their culture to ASK for help.
They were always willing to accept the help itself.
Well it makes sense for Yaks to get a little excited seeing someone new around, therefore caused a bigger avalanche, but Prince Rutherford did say "Snow falls off the mountain all the time, every Yickslurberfest.", indicating the avalanche is not an accident but more like an annually routine, thus making their enduring of snow part of their way of life.
I'm not saying Pinkie meant for something harm, I'm saying that her friendly actions may accidentally lead to changing Yaks' culture. As you said(and I agree), Yaks were willing to accept the help. Without Rutherford's stubbornness they probably gonna accept it right away, they may even try to learn from ponies afterwards. It's definitely not bad, but a change is a change nonetheless.
However......again, why not ponies? xD

Is it just me, or was this episode a little too...predictable?
Predictable doesn't mean bad.
Knowing the destination doesn't make the journey less fun.
Of course, that depends on a case by case basis, but MLP
has a pretty good track record of keeping plots simple but fun.
It's a balance after all. It's meant to be simple enough for kids, but
it's done so well that adults can enjoy it too.
