In this explanation u will be able to use google translator so that non arabic speakers could verify independantly: That word used in the saying of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon Him " الرفيق.." is referring to the last word in the verse (4/69) in The Qur'an
" وَحَسُنَ أُولَٰئِكَ رَفِيقًا..."
it's the same word with 2 different format but with the same meaning, in order to verify u put the verse " وَحَسُنَ أُولَٰئِكَ رَفِيقًا..."
in google translation from arabic to english u see it indicates plural form "companions" , then leave only the last word "رَفِيقًا..." it indicates a singular form "companion" Now let read the entire verse (And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger, then they will be in the company of those on whom Allah has bestowed His grace, of the Prophets, the Siddiqin, the martyrs, and the righteous. And how excellent these companions are!) U understand now that companion is actually referring to that company of those on whom Allah has bestowed His grace = the Prophets, the Siddiqin, the martyrs, and the righteous.
Al-Bukhari recorded that `A'ishah said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah saying,
