    Going to be giving this a shot in the next couple of weeks. This will be my most ambitious project to date. I was wanting to build it earlier in the year but lumber prices made it a prohibitive

    I think a center support would be a good idea too. (My wife and I are little on the larger size). Also, maybe adjust the dimensions for a deeper seat both bottom and back to accommodate a cushion of choice. Otherwise, I love it! It's a great design and I hope to build one soon! Cheers from Chattanooga, TN!

    Seeing this project brought me back to my childhood. I remember one just like this my father made out of redwood back in the very early 70's. Good job.

    Just built one using pine due to cost. I had a blast with it. I plan on making a second but need to widen the seat area for a slightly bigger person. Thank you for making your videos and plans so easy to follow. I am new to this wood working thing and am really enjoying it.

    Great project, and easy to build. A couple of hints for the "less practiced" (like me): Be sure to think about the finished side of your lumber when making your cuts. I used cedar which had a rough side and a smooth side. To remain consistent, one set of chair support pieces need to be reversed in that situation. It's also helpful to do an initial sanding of the lumber before putting it together. Finally, instead of rounding off the back supports at the top, I cut a cap piece for both chairs out of 1x6 and then ripped it to fit. It gave it a nice finished look. Thanks for putting this out there for all of us to enjoy!

    Hey Pete! I made this and I took your suggestion and modified it. I closed the opening under the table to make a small storage area. I also added slats across the back to give it a more sophisticated look. I used your plans and changed them up a bit to make a chair. I made it king size for us Big guys.

      +DIY PETE had a go this afternoon, it's not perfect but that's part of its charm. Ended up having to use Australian treated pine, which doesn't come in the exact widths as your plans (or at least the store I went to didn't). It still looks great though. Huge thanks from a true beginner!

    I just want to thank you for the plans on this bench. I'm almost finish with the bench and I just need to add the last few wood planks. After sitting in the bench, I would suggest two areas I would change. One change would be putting the top brace that holds the legs together on the outside. The other change would be to make the seats 20 inches apart to give yourself more room. The 16 inch spacing seem to be a little too cramped

    Great project. I plan to build this. However, if you build this with cedar and it will be outside you want to either glue or use stainless steel hardware because cedar expands and contracts with temperature changes and deck screws will work loss. Thanks for posting.

    should i use white pine to make this chair? If I choose white pine, what will I lose compared to yellow pine?

  • @whitey3154
    @whitey3154 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I just built this out of pine in a weekend and I would recommend one change. The overall size is a little snug for a full grown adult male. id recommend making it 6 in longer, giving each seat 3 inches of width. I'd also go 3 more inches taller on the back rest and 3 more inches in over all depth, (i like to slouch). And since I used pine I prestained all the wood with Olympic deck stain before i made any cuts which went pretty quick.

    Pete, if I add 12 inches to the width, will I need a center leg? I’m considering making one with a wider seating area.

    • @DIYPETE
      @DIYPETE  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Scott! To be honest I think you'd be fine spanning the extra 12 inches with the 2x6. If you felt it necessary, you could always add a center leg later, but I think you'll be fine without.

  • @jem42670

    I built this bench and it came out really nice, I made it a little wider because I'm a big guy but didn't think about the depth. I don't need it to be deeper but i'm finding it hard to find seat cushions for the shallow depth of the seat "less than 18inches" Are the single patio chairs deeper?

  • @garygoode8714
    @garygoode8714 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I"m guessing this will make the chair 16ish inches from the ground? I"m taller and would rather have a higher chair. do I just add a couple inches on the cuts for the boards holding the seat?

    • @DIYPETE

      Yes, modifying the height is pretty simple and adding the extra height would get you there.

      Emt Scythe Hi! Glue is great to use. I've built a number of these without and they've held up real well, but if you have glue lying around, as you know, it will enhance the strength even more. I've been trying to show the gluing steps in my more recent videos. Thanks for the comment!

    Hi Pete, i have viewed your video & read a few hundred comments but I can't seem to find one thing. I am sure I missed it but how long is the 2 by 6? and how long is the bench when completed? This is my first of many projects I will be doing since retirement. Very impressed with your knowledge of wood working.

      Hi Kimberly! The 2x6 is 61 inches long --- and the overall width with the armrests is about 66 inches. The link to the plans can be found on my site: www.diypete.com/how-to-build-a-double-chair-bench-with-table-free-plans/ -- enter a " 0 " to get them for free :) Cheers!

    Awesome video! Quick question. Are the 1"x4"s and 1"x6"s true, or are they slightly thinner, say .75" X3.75" and .75"X5.75" My big concern is bending if they are not thick enough.
    Thanks!

    • @DIYPETE
      @DIYPETE  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! A 2x4 is 1 1/2 inches thick by 3 1/2 inches wide. a 1x6 is 3/4 inches thick by 5 1/2 inches wide. Bending hasn't been an issue with all the support under each slat. Cheers

    Thank you for this! I’m a neewbie from Sweden ! I’m starting to learn by doing these diy projects and i’m slowly getting there. It’s a bit confusing for me since i have to learn the metric or use a inch to mm converter. I’m almost done with the cutting now, the only thing i don’t understand is the 15 angle cut. Should the piece be 24 5/16 where i make the cut? Or at the edge? I hope you see this soon! Thanks again! / Charlie

    • @DIYPETE
      @DIYPETE  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great to hear from you Charlie and I hope you are doing well over in Sweden! The cut should measure 24 5/16 from the short point to the long point. Best of luck!

    New guy here - If I wanted to use pine (to save $ on materials) and just stain it a different color, could I sand all of my pieces and do the staining prior to assembly? There are some hard to reach places once it is assembled. Any tips/help would be greatly appreciated!

    • @DIYPETE
      @DIYPETE  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Derek! You can definitely build it out of pine to save on materials. A lot of folks do. You can also stain prior to assembling if you'd prefer. Spraying the stain is another option. Cheers!

    Great video, thanks for posting! How has the spar urethane finish held up - are you happy with it? Thanks.

    • @DIYPETE
      @DIYPETE  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jeremy! If the furniture is going under a porch it does fine --- but the sun and rain will take a toll on it if outside all the time. You can sand and re-seal when needed. But you can tell the spots where it has been worn away and sometimes it will gray a bit in those spots. I've been using deck stain on my furniture now and it has been what I've moved towards recommending. I don't have the clear finish that I love -- but re-staining it makes it look brand new and it seems to do a better job outside withstanding the elements. what kind of blade do you use on your mitre saw? a ripping blade or a finishing blade?

    • @DIYPETE
      @DIYPETE  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Andrew! It depends what I am working on - But I generally use sort of a multi purpose blade with a few more teeth then a ripping saw. If I am framing walls I'll use a ripping blade - if I'm working with nicer quality woods like walnut etc I'll throw in a finish blade.

      Hi Tony! The store bought wood I refer to as 2x4 / 2x6 etc --- they are actually 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 or 1 1/1 x 5 1/2". So you'd want to mill them down to the smaller dimensions if that makes sense. Cheers!
