How did I NOT know this? I’ve never understood why I was proportioned differently from other people my height. I am nearly 6 feet tall but have far shorter legs than other people that I’m familiar with. Your explanation of how Japanese people are proportioned explained it for me. It was a revelation! Thank you!
I wear a hakama for akidio and trying to find a women detailing how to wear it was hard so i've been wearing it the male way for a few weeks but this looks much easier to to and better described thank you
I wore Hakama once and it was so comfortable! I love it! I really want to wear one at my graduation even if I'm in America. Japan has been a big driver for me to finish so for me it's a tribute some a culture that inspires me so much.
Thanks for the clarification on types of kimono you can wear with a hakama. I have worn them with komon most of the time and I always wondered if that was correct.
This video is awesome! I got a komon kimono today from a grab bag and it's quite short on me as I'm a tall girl even without the ohashori and I was worried I'd have to resell it, but if I get hakama pants I can still make a nice style! Thanks for the awesome video!
I had no idea there was a full obi and bow under the hakama. The most I've worn has been yukata for the local omatsuri. I've always wanted to give hakama a try but I've always been concerned with fit. I'm both much taller and heavier than your average Japanese woman so sizing is a real pain. This has been very helpful.
Loving this tutorial! I recently purchased my first hakama and I thought it was a little too long for me? But once I wore tabi socks + geta with them it looked great!
Rebecca Cocker yeah, a long hakama looks so great with tabi and zōri. You could also try to tie the obi a little higher, when you want to wear it with boots.
I know this video is a couple of years old at this point, but can I say it's GREAT to have found it?! I have a small collection of kimono and one hakama, but the hakama was for kendo and costuming and had the backboard and everything. I recently got a woman's hakama and then I froze when I realized, "Oh gosh... I don't know how I'm supposed to actually wear this with my kimono to look nice!" Thank you so much for this. ;w;
I love Hakamas. Kimonos are one of my all time favorite Traditional Fashions. Adding a Hakama makes me happy for some reason. This tutorial is so useful.
This video was most helpful, thank you! Actually I have woolen hakama and it doesn’t have a plastic chip 😬 but it’s vintage so might be quite old. And I’m sure everyone looking forward to monpei video❤️
The bump from the obi bow reminds me of the effect of a bum roll or bum pad in historic European clothes. The front and back ties on the hakama skirt is also very similar to how petticoats are made.
All the advices you gave on how to choose a hakama are so good! Thanks! I learned the hard way the differences in body proportions between Japanese people and European people : i bought online a too short hakama because of that! I still can wear it for an informal style with boots for example, but my first purpose was to practice kyudo, and of course it wasn't long enough for the formal wearing of the ceremonial shoot! I finally had to buy another one! 🤣 I wish i had your video a few years ago! (but well, i still have this shorter hakama!)
Thank you for the tips on hakama length. I was indecisive between two lengths and based on your video got the longer one luckily. Wore it today. Perfect length ^_^
Thank you so much!! I don’t get to have a graduation ceremony this year, because of the virus. But I’m still going to wear the hakama I got 🥰👘 Your instructions are so clear and easy to follow!
Hello, I really liked your video, yet I still have one question. The skirt-like Hakama, did it exist during the Edo Period already? And if yes, could women wear it?
My jaw dropped watching you dress! WOW! But l do have a slightly strange question.... when you go back to Germany to visit, do you take your kimono, hakama, and other items of clothing or dress strictly Western?
There was only one question that I would like to ask you...which obi belt to use for a hakama skirt? I went through a lot of research about kimonos for years.
This is how my school teaches it and the hakama fits perfectly. But please note that my knot is way too much in the middle and a little too low... Sorry!
I used to wear a hakama as an aikidoka (got two of them but of course they're for budo practice). Love the feeling of wearing those but never worn over an actual kimono (only over keikogi) and am quite curious!
Great video! When you wear the pants Hakama over a Kimono, I suppose you should make the kimono short enough so it does not get caught in the crotch between the legs? Last question, I suppose with thos big side openings the Hakam must always be worn over something for modesty or is there a way to add an innner "skirt" to it so it can be worn over a shirt? Maybe just wear a very long shirt LOL
Oh, basically there is none. Only the ties to tie on the front are a bit wider. But I’ve never researched more about it, so probably there are small differences, I don’t know.
@@BillyMatsunaga the back of men's hakama isnt as wide as women's hakama. I realized this when I tried it out with mine that I was told was genderless, but realized it wasn't like yours... if you know a good place to order women's that ships overseas please let me know! I've only seen 3 pairs sold
Hi Billy! I want to wear a furisode for graduation but I would like to put something over it to protect it. All the Haoris I have seen have short sleeves and I don't think I could squeeze in the long sleeves of the furisode... what would you suggest?
oh, I've never sewn one, so I'm not quite sure. Usually hakama is a made of a hakama fabric. I think. Especially the most formal hakama for men is made of silk and heavier than kimono. My hakama is polyester... but it does its job! :)
You can either have/sew a shortened kimono (those are in existence, but I guess they are fairly rare, because I have hardly ever seen one in shops) or just gather up your kimono. You'd find instructions on pinterest, e.g.
Hi thank you for your videos ! I have a pretty short hakama but I kind of like the look of it with the kimono in its full length visible under (a bit like an apron). Would it be sacrilegious to let visible the bottom of your kimono, or is their room for a little experimentation ?
Years ago, I made a hakama, and it fit me perfectly. Recently, I tried to make one again - same pattern, just different width. The length was the same, because I thought: I grew sideways, but not in length. Weirdly, it was too short. A LOT. I think it's because of my added weight, it curves more at the hip, because I wore it like a standard skirt, not with kimono. That probably requires added length. Just in case anybody else wishes to wear theirs like a skirt. :) Another thing that surprised me: When I made a floor-length hakama and jumped on the trampoline with it, I expected it to make things a little difficult. But no, not at all. Didn't stumble a singe time. :D
Girl pls can you just to me and help me wear my hakama like I’m gonna graduate and my mom made me wear a hakama even tho I didn’t want to cuz it’s too hard to wear
The karate gi is more like a reinforced underwear. Very different. Aikidoka often wear hakama - traditionally, I believe, those who hold a black belt. Kendo also sounds familiar for hakama-wearing practitioners. No idea about kenjutsu, but it would make sense. :)
Wow. She tied her hakama really high up! Also, hakama are a symbol of samurai status, and there were barely any samurai women. And yes, they are very formal

Yeah, there are so many different weird rumors about hakama out there. Wanted to make that clear. I'm happy that it helped!! 💕

thank you so much 😭ive been wearing my hakama incorrect for so long this really helped
Thank you. Could you maybe tell about how they choose the colour combination? Obi with kimono and haori, etc.
Would you ever consider making a video about how to sew a men’s hakama? They are so incredible
It’s not only considered, it’s planned. But we’ll see when I’ll be able to actually make such a video.
Thank you for taking the time to make these videos and tutorials. They are helpful and informative! Keep up the great work!
ClearlyPixelated thank you so much 😄

Will you ever make a how to make hakama skirt tutorial or diy video? I think that would be something interesting to see
Hi Billy, how is this type of obi ita different from regular one? And what is it called in Japanese? Thank you

Oh, basically there is none. Only the ties to tie on the front are a bit wider. But I’ve never researched more about it, so probably there are small differences, I don’t know.
Isn't hakama a kind of a pant?
And there it's a kind of a skirt
Maybe that's the difference

btw, aikido hakama are made either of cotton or polyester - but of course that is a sports item, not a fashion item. :)
How do you wear hakama that are not skirt version but trouser version? You can't put those over a hakama

Xan we wear a hakama anywhere/anywhen or is it reserved for ceremonies?
Is this also the correct style for men?
Could a hakama also be worn with western clothing? It looks a bit like a pleated skirt.
Yes. She has a video on incorporating kimono into daily wardrobe
Is that bump in the back suppose to be noticeable? Most picture show it looking flat in the back
omg. you are like one of those magicians who put baby in woven wrap in minutes. respect
Do you have to wear the hakama over your obi or over your obi knot?
Just manage to wear my hakama for graduation for the first time thanks to this video 😭🙏
thank you so much for this video!!!

Just do whatever you like! (I wouldn't like it...) but whatever makes you happy! :)
Is this best with a furisode kimono or can a yukata/haori work as well?
I have a question! When can you wear a hakama?
And can you wear a hakama all year round?
I wonder too !

can i wear hakama without obi?
I love hakama!

日本語大丈夫なんですか❔
Can men or women wear hakama outside just normally ?
It’s not that hard? Looks hard to me. I’ve given up before starting.
I'm struggling to find a hakama
CAN you wear Hakama without the Obi?
1. Can I use hakama alone or do I need to use it with kimono?
2. Can I use hakama daily?
Can an older lady, such as myself, wear Hakama?
Cherries Jubilee of course! Nothing speaks against that 😊
How to you was a hakuma?
Question, is a karate gi a kimono? Would anyone wear hakama for exercise, like kenjutsu for example?
The karate gi is more like a reinforced underwear. Very different. Aikidoka often wear hakama - traditionally, I believe, those who hold a black belt. Kendo also sounds familiar for hakama-wearing practitioners. No idea about kenjutsu, but it would make sense. :)
Boys also wear hakama in Japan?🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗😍😍
Yes
I have short everything! And, who helps a woman get dressed if she's alone with no one to help?
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh but for man it easyer than for woman tought
But do you really need the obi when wearing hakama?
I think the obi helps keep the hakama in place.
It depends on what hakama you're going to wear. There are hakama types that are worn without an obi. But the hakama I wore in the video needs an obi.
Wow. She tied her hakama really high up! Also, hakama are a symbol of samurai status, and there were barely any samurai women. And yes, they are very formal
@Mark Brereton , a lot higher, in fact.
