- In this lecture from our 2009 Deep in History conference, Dr. Scott Hahn examines the seven petitions of the Lord's Prayer, and takes a look at why this prayer is placed in the liturgy of the Mass after the consecration, and before the distribution of Holy Communion. He looks at the context in which Jesus teaches the prayer during the Sermon on the Mount, the significance of referring to God as "Father," and more. Dr. Hahn argues that the 'Our Father' is a prayer that we pray much, but ponder little; and argues that a better understanding of these words, which come directly from the lips of Jesus, can lead us to a deeper appreciation for our relationship with God.

First they don't want anyone know about Ukraine, me and Vatican. If they win China , they will attack Russia after Russia is lost. We have prayed our father many times but too tittle have we pondered about it. I am moved shamefully for the many times I just recited it for the respect and mere trust in He who gave it to us. Thanks God even in ignorance of your son, you always answered. In many circumstances I did not witness but buffled. " I have nothing I can do except to pray for them". Now I understand I feel like crying for the many instances i dspised such prayer. I am shaken for little was I aware that it is about uniting my will with his, my weakness with His sthrengh and power, my time with eternity. My heart will ever be awake whenever my soul recites the Lord's prayer. God you are our father I am your son. Thy name, that will , thy Kingdom , Give us , lead us not. What awesome beauty of the depths in those seven petitions.

An elaboration on the Lord's prayer (an excellent elaboration btw) does not change this fact, it only masks it.
The Vatican II Sect, is not Catholicism, it is the End Times Counter-church. The wheat are truly being separated from the tares. The Catholic remnant are holding the faith and are validated by scripture, dogma and the magisterium (pre-Vat II).

@Sterling Crowne Your logic is absurd and an overreaction to what was said in the talk. Jesus taught his disciples who were Jews. Jesus was a Jew who was also the Son of God and was the Jewish Messiah to lead the Jews into the New Covenant with 'Our Father, (of all mankind) who is in heaven'. As God we are called to emulate his life and pray in the way he taught us to pray with the Our Father. He *never* said to stop praying it, so why should we?

I wanted to ask, why the last line of the Lord's prayer is always omitted, because we are told not to add to nor take away from scripture. I have pondered this for years. Most sincerely,
The last ligne, the doxology, isn't in the Bible but comes from early Church Tradition and can be found in the Didache. At Mass, the priest usually says the doxology and the congregation replies "Amen". The C of E added it definitely to the Lord's Prayer during the Elizabethan era to mark a difference with the CC. So oddly enough Protestants always follow a Catholic Tradition that is not always followed by Catholics. Hope this helps.

What a beautiful explanation of “Give us this day our day bread.” Not just food for our bodies but also the Eucharist to feed our souls. God gives us our daily super substantial (Epiousios) bread that we receive every day at mass.

Dr. Hahn you have some great insights including how we are Gods children. I was a bit disappointed you seem to have missed what to me is the second most profound part of the Lord’s Prayer. “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” Jesus wants us to pray and to ask for God’s will and kingdom to be on earth as it is in heaven. He asks for the gulf to be no more, the separation and exile to end. For the ‘ruler of this world’ to be removed and for the truth of God to be undeniable in the mouths and hearts of men. As great as the church militant is, it is not what Jesus means here. It is beautiful, profound, glorious and wise - to truly make heaven and earth one in full reality not just inside the sanctum of the church. I encourage everyone to meditate on this portion of the prayer 🙏 and to truly pray for the return of the king to this world in all his glory with the fullness of his kingdom.

Question: If Jesus Himself was begotten by God, then Jesus himself did not exist as the 2nd person of the trinity since all eternity? Begotten means that the begetter was obviously "before" the begotten?! So my question is that the Father existed first but Jesus came later, so how can He be part of the trinity from all eternity?

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. { You see about 600years before he was born, the Prophet says Jesus is called, Wonderful consellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father} and when Jesus spoke to the Jews , the Evangelist John writes John8:54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. 55 Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.”
57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.
I think you would also stone Jesus for saying ' he existed before abraham was born. Does not that show you he is from eternity? he is the only begotten, because he came from eternity & was born of a woman without a man, but by God himself. Only the eternal God could beget an eternal God.

Well, I just came across this interesting teaching, and look forward with an open mind to discover what is all about. As a raised young child in the teachings of the catholic catechism. I discover many contradictions from the established institution just like the famous German monk Martin Luther. Just by observing the actual symbolic seal, it starts with the famous basilica in Rome, instead of the Word of God the Holy Bible, right in the top center. Unfortunately, before we were taught just to recite a number of "prayers" with no deep meaning as what we pray for. Hopefully, I'll listen to this lecture and discern if is truly rooted in the "WORD". JESUS is the word, the Lord and King Of Kings in which every knee including satan shall one day bow. this prayer, the Lord`s Prayer, has power. Try and listen to it recited and sung in Syriac Aramaic (the language of Jesus) and you will feel its power. I have this prayer downloaded from youtube (something good from youtube) on my phone and through the day when I feel weighed down by worry, doubt and fear.... I listen and sing along side to it and my soul`s hunger is quenched. I understand it more now but if anything it just increases its power to satisfy my soul`s hunger.

Part 2...a strange thing happened...I couldn't move forward.Something inside me just told me to NOT go into the woods, and it was like a powerful force turning me around. So I left. Next day I find out there was a DERANGED man living in there that police were looking for and found. Had I gone in, I would have walked right up to were he was. DELIVERED FROM EVIL!!
