This season most definitely doesn’t deserve the hate. HOW can you hate the season that contains “I need about tree fiddy,” one of the greatest pieces of comedic genius to ever grace the ears of man?
Seasons 2-4 are my favourite of the series, Johnnie disagrees with me! I feel like seasons 5-8 which have great episodes, some of my favourites, have some absolute duds. I loved the first Towelie episode when I was a kid but I watched it recently and feel like this is when they started going with the "we're so whacky" Family Guy-esque humour, which they thankfully dropped by season 9 when the humour evolved.
I know I’ve been commenting a lot but I actually love Cat Orgy as an episode because of Cartman and Shelly’s friendship at the end, it really felt genuine and I wish they went back to it
Jesus is such an underrated character. They made him into such a bad ass in the episode red sleigh down. And then when he threw that shuriken in the Easter special I fucking lost it.
I tend to treat Season Three as the last 'classic styled season' that still sorta has the early days crudeness. The plots and animation are still pretty simple and slow paced, and the kids are still a bit bratty and doe eyed, and the earlier characters and catchphrases are still more prominent. The later parts of the show are starting to definitely rise to prominence here, Matt and Trey's humour, pacing and voice work are getting tighter, and we're starting to see some of the later core elements shift in like Butters and Randy limelight, 'evil schemer' Cartman and more satirical plot lines, though I think Season Four is where they REALLY start to overtake as the core of the show. It is a shame it's the last season to have Mary Kay Bergman and under such tragic circumstances. She was definitely the most enthusiastic VA of the early era and it's a shame she didn't live to see South Park peak. I can't begrudge Mr Hankey's Christmas Classics at all, it was a fun way to give the album 'music videos' AND to give Mary Kay Bergman one final bow with nearly all her key characters.
I had always assumed that Cartman having Kenny’s eyes gave him the ability to know about Kenny’s constant deaths, considering the episode where it’s most obvious that he knows about this, “Cartmanland,” happens two seasons after the eye transplant.
I honestly don't see much of a difference between the second and third seasons honestly. They feel the same. Not that that's a bad thing, because the first three or so seasons are my favorite.
I group them as, 1, 2-4 (my faves), 5-8, I'm currently rewatching the whole thing and am on 9 so don't know where to group it up until.. maybe 14? or 16? Idunno.
Korn is the reason I discovered South Park lol I was a big nu metal kid so when I found out they were on an episode I gave it a try and I’ve never looked back hehehe
Season 3 is the start of the golden age, if the movie is considered to be apart of the golden age that means season 3 has to be by default since most of the season aired after the movie was released
I didn’t realize how much of these I remembered, especially that Rainforest joint. It’s interesting to have the earlier years of the show contextualized. South Park really does have a fascinating evolution. Great job here. 💰💰💰
Season 3 is sort of a tale of two halves. The first half (up to the meteor shower trilogy) is funny but you can tell the stress of the film was getting to them with plots like Jewbilee & the succubus. The second half is hilarious and you really get a sense of where the show is going with episodes like hooked on phonics monkey.
i love how they described making Jewbilee on the audio commentary. "sometimes you just work late and lines like, 'no cake for the infidel' just make so much sense at the time"
Yes! Very much agreed. Jewbilee is by far the weakest of the meteor shower trilogy, and Hooked on Monkey Phonics is my favorite episode this season. I also don’t understand the hate for this one. It’s always been my second favorite after Season 8.
I'm tempted to say Chef doesn't COMPLETELY dwindle post-Season Five. He actually does okay-ish in Season Six (eg. The New Terrence and Phillip Movie Trailer, The Simpsons Did It, The Biggest Douche in the Universe). After the Season Seven premiere though, yeah, he starts to fade into the background.
Idk why but alot of my south park friends always get pissed when i tell then season 4 is the BEST season, hands down. Dont get me wrong i love the early seasons but what they missed in s2 and overdid in s1-3 and it perfectly mixes together. Even with the loss of Mary Kay-Bergman it was like their bounce-back season they didn't even need. R.I.P Mary Kay Bergman and Isaac Hayes. Ps PC principal is the better principal but Victoria is the better person.
Cat Orgy may be my favourite episode of both this season and the series as a whole. Love the comedy, I love how Eric and Shelly, the biggest scumbags in South Park were pinned against each other and the way they put aside their differences felt very genuine and not forced at all.
I actually think that the episode 'Are you there, God? It's me: Jesus' had the most brutal/unpleasant Kenny death in not just Season 3, but in the entirety of South Park in my personal opinion.
‘Sexual l harassment panda,’ ‘the succubus’ and ‘tweek vs craig’ are what I think of when I remember discovering the show. When it began I wasn’t born but I remember there was a 2 week marathon of South Park on TV when I was 12 and I was so excited to watch it lmao ‘Hooked on monkey fonics’ and ‘merry Christmas Charlie Manson’ have transcripts which may as well be tattooed onto my eyelids and this is where the dreidel song comes from isnt it? Lmaooo is it weird that I feel kinda nostalgic
I totally agree. Not enough people give this one the credit it deserves. IMO it's the season where the show becomes more focused on satire than on shock value.
Succubus is one of my all time favourite episodes - so underrated. Love the wee tune sung backwards at the end haha, always found it so catchy. Great video Johnnie!
Mr hankeys Christmas classics is so nostalgic. Loved having it on during Christmas as a kid. And the Santa Jesus sing is by far the best, so glad they cleared it
Season 3 was the first one I got on VHS, when I was about 8. So it will always be one of my favourites, with Sexual Harassment Panda, probably being my favourite episode in it.
The first 3 seasons of South Park gives me a similar vibe to certain game trilogies like Crash Bandicoot in terms of quality. I don't care much for the first and second due to their fundamental issues and poor creative choices, but I love the third for fixing and addressing it all and thus having all of the pieces finally come together to form a genuinely superb package. Focusing purely on South Park, Season 3 is the first season I can call genuinely good. It does start off with a lot of the same problems as the first 2 seasons, but it then increases greatly in writing quality as soon as the first episode after the film's release appears. This season is filled with a great chunk of memorable stories, whether it's Sexual Harassment Panda, Hooked on Monkey Phonics, The Red Badge of Gayness, Starvin Marvin in Space, Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics, Korn's Groovy Pirate Ghost Mystery, and finally the best of the bunch, Chinpokomon. When I look back at the first 7 seasons, this alongside Season 4 really feel like the ones that are just so easy to revisit. The original charm of the previous seasons is still there, but now it's backed up with solid storytelling while still maintaining every bit of the initial set of core rules at a good, basic level instead of blatantly throwing away some of it like 5-7, making for easily one of my favourite seasons of the entire show.
I actually find South Park's seasons comparable to The Simpsons. The first three seasons clearly fine tune as they go along, but they retain this quainter style than the later ones. It's Season Four where we really start to see plots become more rapid and busy as a sign of how the show will evolve from that point on, with switches in humour and recurring characters.
One thing about season 3 of South Park, Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics is the only South Park Christmas episode that I watch every year without fail. I usually end up seeing most of the other Christmas episodes anyway since Much in Canada re-runs them many times over each December but I have the old Rhino DVD of Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics in my DVD and Blu-Ray pile of Christmas specials and anime disks with Christmas episodes. I barely even knew "O Holy Night" existed before I heard Cartman's version of it. I mean, I was already 25 at the time and I'm sure I'd heard it before but I couldn't hum it until after I'd seen Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics.
My favorite episode for season 3 was “The Succubus”. It was fun to see the boys try to get Chef back although they were acting selfish in the beginning but later the situation turns into a real threat to Chef’s life. And Cartman being blind was funny 😆. I also really liked the 3 parter episode. “Cat Orgy” was the weakest part part thought. “Two Guys Naked in a Hot Tub” was the best one. “Jewbilee” was awesome too. But screw Kyle for being a snake to Kenny though😂. That wasn’t cool. And little Kenny still sacrificed himself to save the scouts. “Red Badge of Gayness”, “Hooked on Monkey Fonics”, and “Tweek vs. Craig” are also stand out episodes for me. My least favorite episode was “Jakovasaur”. I hate that episode. Those things are annoying and I know they’re supposed to be but it wasn’t funny. Just annoying. The episode I see the most not just for this season, but OF THE ENTIRE SHOW is “Sexual Harassment Panda”. It’s a good episode but Comedy Central seems to really love it😂. Episode I see the least is “Are You There God? It’s Me, Jesus”. Idk if it’s just me but I hardly ever see this episode on.
Season 3 has my most favorite episodes of the entire franchise. No matter how bad my day turns out to be, Rainforest, Cat Orgy and Chinpokomon will never ever let me down. Also Tree Fiddy is one of the most iconic scenes.
I would argue that season 3 is even better than season 4. Not that season 4 is bad or anything but I feel like season 3 just has higher highs overall. The only true standout of season 4 is “Cartman joins NAMBLA” whereas season 3 has “Chinpokemon,” “Rainforest Shmainforest,” “Sexual Harassment Panda,” “Red badge of gayness,” and many more really good episodes.
Its much more clear that cartman knows about kenny dying in S5s "CartmanLand" when he is being sued because of lots of things that happened in the park, including Kenny's death, and Cartman's exuse was "Hey! He Dies all the Time!"
Red badge of gayness, the Christmas special, rainforest shmainforest, sexual harassment panda, and two guys naked in a hot tub made season 3 one of the best seasons ever
5:10 so Kenny's Groundhog Day powers where around even back then. Also I can't believe this reminded me that Gerald was more important than Randy at first
Kenny dies in the Halloween Episode featuring corn, there is a short scene where some speeders from star wars fly out with cables trip him up and shoot him causing an explosion and Kenny's death. So the total count is 15.
A year late with a comment on this vid, but as a kid living in Ireland, some things that get pretty popular eventually come off as kind of 'faddy' after a while, and South Park after a year or two seemed like that, by the time season 3 ended, I lost interest in South Park. I always enjoyed it, but the formula felt like something that was passé by then. I didn't watch for a good few years until I saw Asspen on tv late one night (about 1am in an unadvertised slot, when it debuted it was as big here as anywhere else but by then it was very blink and you'll miss it in terms of promotion), once again, I was hooked, that episode completely sucked me in again. I love s3 btw I think it's one of their best overall. 3 to 9 and probably 10 was just a run of brilliance.
Actually... Was Cartman, erm The Coon... around when Mysterion said how he dies all the time? I don't think he was. Maybe this was on purpose. Maybe if Cartman wasn't surprised or joking about it, it'd be suspicious so he just isn't there. He explicitly mentions in the Cartmanland episode that Kenny "dies all the time". It'd be interesting to see Matt and Trey delve into that. In one of their commentaries they say that they didn't reveal EVERYTHING about Kenny's powers/ deaths but that there's an Easter egg in the trilogy that hints at something about it that they didn't reveal. Maybe it has something to do with Cartman knowing. Maybe he was in with the cult. So many possibilities.
I love korn and i always have so the spooky episode is one of my favorites because of nostalgia and because i still love korn and i still love south park
The single funniest moment in all of south park is when cartman hits the monkey and 3 toed sloth in the amazon rain forest. Therefore season 3 is wonderful
Was Mary Kay the voice actor of the 700 Club lady in "Starvin Marvin in Space?" PS "Chinpokomon" deserves special credit. Lambtron was obviously meant to be a lamb-like parody of Pikachu. One year later, Game Freak introduced the pokemon Mareep/Flaafy/Ampharos, electric lamb/sheep pokemon. To this day I swear they were based off Lambtron
man I had some good fuckin times watching the earlier seasons of this show I remember smoking weed in my living room while eating trix and laughing my ass off at these classic episodes good times man
Season 3 is my second favorite after Season 8, no idea it had all this hate. Hooked on Monkey Phonics is my favorite this time around, an extremely underrated one. Kyle and Rebecca are adorable together. And finally someone else who doesn’t hate Jackovasaurs! I actually love it and it’s even in my Top 20. Yes the point is definitely that they’re annoying, Jar Jar Binks was the inspiration for them!
Hey dude I just wanna let u know I really like all this south park content and I've watched all ur south park videos but this one got me to subscribe to u because Its been years since I've watched the full series through and I forgot when they stopped killing kenny off in every episode but I'm excited to see what you'll say about it and what you'll replace the kenny death count with
if you're coming here to correct me about Kenny dying in Korn's Groovy Pirate Ghost Mystery, i already know. i forgot a mid-credit scene
Man, remember me I know you’re going to go viral in a couple months (currently here at 6k)
Bergmann was the voice actor of dahne blake, too.
Yeah, the Ed209 costume and the starwars drones.
This season most definitely doesn’t deserve the hate. HOW can you hate the season that contains “I need about tree fiddy,” one of the greatest pieces of comedic genius to ever grace the ears of man?
Tree fiddy.

only disagree about season 2, friend. seasons 3 and 4 are great
@@JambiStambi I'm actually going to rewatch season 2 because I respect your opinion and I wonder if I'll end up agreeing with you
i-I need about tree fiddy
cartman literally said once something along the lines of "kenny oh he dies all the time"
in Season 5's episode Cartmanland, yup
I know I’ve been commenting a lot but I actually love Cat Orgy as an episode because of Cartman and Shelly’s friendship at the end, it really felt genuine and I wish they went back to it
I love that episode because Cartmans cat says aw man when the bigger male cat couldn’t mount her.
It would be nice if Matt Stone and Trey Parker could make more Eric and Shelly episodes
My friend actually told me to start and season 3 and honestly I don't regret it.
Jesus is such an underrated character. They made him into such a bad ass in the episode red sleigh down. And then when he threw that shuriken in the Easter special I fucking lost it.
These retrospectives are great, man. Keep it up
you're so kind! definitely will!

PS "Chinpokomon" deserves special credit. Lambtron was obviously meant to be a lamb-like parody of Pikachu. One year later, Game Freak introduced the pokemon Mareep/Flaafy/Ampharos, electric lamb/sheep pokemon. To this day I swear they were based off Lambtron
I think cartman partially subverted Kenny’s curse once he stole his eyes. That’s why In so episodes, he knows that Kenny’s dies
man I had some good fuckin times watching the earlier seasons of this show I remember smoking weed in my living room while eating trix and laughing my ass off at these classic episodes good times man
I Think Clubhouse From Season 2 Was Butters First Speaking Role Even Tho It Was Very Quick
Congrats on 6k too!!!
Season 3 is one of the best of the entire series! People who dislike it were probably born in the 2000s
This was my least favorite season when I was younger but maybe if I watch it again I'll appreciate it
How many season retrospectives are you planning to do?
as many as i have to
@@JambiStambi 👍
i would consider maybe ranking the episodes in the seasons at some point
I like all seasons
This is some good stuff, keep up the good work.
Just found this channel and wow I love it
Omg Hooked on Monkey Phonics Killed Kenny ... Cartman - Your damn straight he did 🤣🤣🤣
You take your tin snips. You line it up on the tin. And then you snip.
I think this is where SP hit it's stride.
Yes the point is definitely that they’re annoying, Jar Jar Binks was the inspiration for them!
shoutout to you for using red vox music in the background
I had the Sexual Harassment Panda theme as my $0.99 ring tone until ~2008.
this is such an underrated channel
oh and in a episode cartman said something like ”Kenny dies all the time” or some shit
season 5's Cartmanland
Hey dude I just wanna let u know I really like all this south park content and I've watched all ur south park videos but this one got me to subscribe to u because Its been years since I've watched the full series through and I forgot when they stopped killing kenny off in every episode but I'm excited to see what you'll say about it and what you'll replace the kenny death count with
I'm so glad Ned survived a ManBearPig attack, and Jimbo survived COVID 🙏🏻
This is a top tier season. Alot of classic episodes
