I love straight south swells because of the angle they hit and run the sandbar.... but seeing one this big?? IT BLEW MY MIND AT DAWN! - remember... I'm talking straight South Swells here. Not other swell angles, as surf this size from other angles isn't uncommon at all. But for a storm this big from the South, this was special.
Amazing how many waves you all caught in that wind. I assume jet skis are outlawed there? Would be an amazing tow session to catch all the shifty peaks with that much wind and current
Great clip Brett, I watch your videos whenever you release them. I turn 70 the 18 of this month. I’m from NJ and surf NJ and did my trips to The outback’s in the 70’s. Love watching your videos. Brings back great memories..
dude! thanks so much, that means a lot, especially from someone like yourself. Always trying to make each episode the best I can, even though limited with what we can shoot and I can edit in a weeks time. I'm just glad I can look back on videos from a year ago, 2yrs ago, and see progress... so always trying to keep that building. hope you're well man!
We even had overhead throaty barrels in garden city beach SC. I was curious to how it ended up looking for you guys up there. Seems like the entire east coast had solid waves from this one! Stoked for you guys, looked insane!
loved that you talked about fighting the currents and getting crushed in the jaws of that wave. You have to fight to get those waves. No easy task, but well worth the waves you got to ride. thanks Brett.
super impressive brett. great to see you honestly discussing this, would love to see some info on how you approach paddling out in these kind of conditions! keep them coming! yew
👏🏽👏🏽 that current looked so brutal I love your commitment to go and have a crack in conditions like that. We deal with the same thing in big south swell on the tweed coast. We use our JetSki to lift our wave count and the fact that at 52 it gives us the opportunity to surf longer and save energy. You guys would clean up if you could use a JetSki. Your channel really shows the stoke you and the crew have and the stoke you all share. 💯👊🏽
Early 90's around thanksgiving Frisco bath house, one of three days in my life I thought I may drown after getting held down for what seemed like forever.
WoW! Nothing more to be said than ultimate thanks and praise to the Almightt Creator of all that is living and alive (not a corps) Thanks to you too Mr. Gnarly for this presentation. Pompano are on the loose round here!
Great editing Brett! Wow! Thanks for sharing and working hard on this one! Vlog idea…. JOneil vlogs his morning, Brett vlogs his morning, on a day of chasing waves… and you combine the footage… to show how you all colab on filming days. Cut to JOneil making his chai tea and loading the car! Would be cool to see bits on picking the spot on the island to move to… and making the call. Also... can we get some Cash Barris interviews!
I remember walking miles down the beach from where we parked just from the currents! It was a known thing to do. Especially if you wanted to come across the good sandbars! I hated it and loved it at the same time.
You need to make people realize how hard it is to paddle out in the east when it’s big! I’m in SD but when hurricane swells came in. Man the paddles you had to do just to get a wave don’t even compare to anywhere else! I would fight currents and paddle for an hour sometimes just to make the lineup! It takes work on the east coast compared to other spots!
Few questions mate: Down here in Australia 8 to 10ft is three to four times overhead. Is that what you mean or wave face height when you say that? Also, why don't you use your jetski to navigate to getting in and out the line up? You can still paddle the sets, just use the sled to get you in and out? Wasting so much energy and waves battling the current. Chuck a sled on your ski and really hammer these swells
Ya I go by wave face… I’ve always found it funny to measure waves by the backs. I mean, when teahupoo is 20’ faces the backs are like 5’ cause it’s so below sea level. Plus all our energy is windswell… so different there too. - I touched on why we don’t use skis in the discussion at the end. It’s illegal to beach launch here and closest marinas are 15-20miles away through crazy winds/conditions. Just doesn’t work out.
When you bring up the impact zone! The east coast takes it hands down! I’ve been in many areas to surf but growing up on the east coast nothing compared with how consistent it comes in to other areas! In other places it can be big but there is a Low point between big sets. Other known places are so. Much easier to surf even when big! You have channels and different circumstances with different setups. The east is just a beach break and only one way out!
Yall ever consider using a jetski/doing step off on days like this? Edit: oh, you answered my question in the wrap up 😅 no chances of permits for bombing days?
I tried for years to get a special use permit from NPS. Even had the head ranger and superintendent on my side, cause it’s my b Job, but couldn’t get one. :(
Dude this was a phenomenal video- Those conditions wear you down fast, especially duck diving in that freezing cold water for so long, the thick wetsuit, constant paddling- I would say this is as difficult as it gets- Especially since by the time you are lucky enough to be in the right spot, you have to pop up lightning fast and there is no margin for error at all...Yeah thats as difficult as it gets! OK, so nearly the entire video I am wondering.... Kitesurfing!?!?!?! The wind seemed more than hard enough, I know the offshore wind is pretty dangerous with kitesurfing, but wouldnt this have been do-able with a kiteboard? Seems like you would have so much mobility and you could have caught a zillion waves...Im just sayin.... I am wondering Brett if you are good at kitesurfing, and if on a day like that you wish you could have tried that...I know those conditions would only be for really really experienced guys, but it just seems like it would have been do-able.... I am interested to hear your thoughts. Thank you Brett and God bless you and your family- Keep up the amazing videos!!!!
I used to on my sponge down there, you gotta be real choosy since a lot of the beach breaks waves run super fast and straight. Its awesome to see the inside of them, but it's not fun to get clamped!
Thanks for sharing those moments Brett. Really cool south swell 🙌🏻 next time make sure to have lots of batteries to not lose any moment 😁 Blessings from Chile
Turns out there can be positive aspects to all of our geo-engineered weather of recent- dont respond please. If you are a die hard east - coaster- you MAY have noticed some "examples" over the years... just talkin truth- 🤙great vid, great energy btw!

Awesome video, Brett!
That swell size + wind + current + no channel + thick wetties call for a ski!!!
Hearing you say "I'm scared" makes me feel better . East coast swells == pay to play.

Great video Brett. Im at college now and am missing these winter swells, stay safe out there!
2:16 that’s straight up terrifying
The soundtracks on here are as epic as the surf.

awesome vid. thanks for the breakdown!
Brett that looks NUTS! You've got your own El Slammo Classic!!
😎🤙
I am always inebriated from some fear when the swell builds and the conditions show considerable challenges. Awesome Video.
You guys are warriors!!
incredible crew!!

Man was my paddle power good back then!
Anyone has an idea what the song at ~11:00 min is?
That was awesome get some . Putting in the work . Thanks for sharing that . Late.
Such an awesome episode....💪waves

Jersey was fierce from Izzy but you guys had some epic carnage too!
Good Job you guys ...
how did no one snap a board? that was some heavy surf.
That was MENTAL
23:26 flying through the air inside the pit?? so sick. when i first watched it i thought there was no way you stayed that deep
Massive bombs.. OMG 🤩it takes arms with this current🌬🌪
It looked super tough out there.
Those highly angled swells are always super fun but so tough to get into the gems. Luck of the draw as you said.
The paddle looked grueling

@@brettbarley ah darn, what a shame. Bloody health and safety culture! Can we get a petition on the go?

WORK FOR IT....
NO PAIN NO GAIN...
Personally, I'm happy you can't use jetskis on obx. Watching people do stepoffs is so boring. This is way more entertaining.
Well we’d still paddle… just use it to run up current and get dropped off. Not for step offs.

only the hard core ride these.
please make more videos🙏
I’m trying. Lot to keep up with between surf, edit, husband, father. :)
@@brettbarley I understand completely. Need to enjoy the family kids grow up so fast.

Oooooooh yeah!
What If you started a surf club so you could use the ski for safety 🤔

Let's see the completion of the 0:08 takeoff! That was megamaximus,… and yet you put a bunch of filler. Where is it?! :)
I put it in there… it’s Cash Barris’ wave. Showed in the first section and spoken about with 2 replays in the end.
