    I did basically the same in my home, but I kept the original physical switch and put a smart wifi module underneath in the back box, and made an automation in smartlife just like you did. The module isn't connected to anything as well, it just puts all smart switches and bulbs on or off in my apartment, like a killer switch. Very handy, especially since the Mrs doesn't like talking to Google. !

    This is seriously dangerous for anyone else other than you changing the light bulb. They'll turn it off, the light will go off and they'll think that there is no power to the ceiling pendent. Please don't advise people to do this.

    Great concept! Also I think using a 3 button switch for one room is a great idea for a room with smaller lamps! Thanks for the tip! 😉

    ⚠️ Hi! Great video. I just installed the smart switch in my bedroom, which has a twin switch connection, so 2 switches operate the same lights. I replaced the dumb switch with the simpler connection by adding the common to the Neutral whole and L1 & L2 to L and L1 in the smart.
    The issue is that the other dumb switch doesn’t operate the lights anymore.
    Any ideas why?
    Maybe because I connected the N to the common?...

  • @IanMiddletonX

    Good idea, but the only problem I can see is that people wouldn't be aware that the ceiling rose was permanently live. That might be a problem for people changing the bulbs. Firstly not realising that you have to use a smart bulb, secondly not being aware that you'd have to be much more careful with a permanently live outlet. It's not unknown for people to mess around with wiring assuming the rose is isolated by turning off the switch. I'm guessing that for these reasons this might not be strictly acceptable in terms of code.

    Great video and great idea. I’ve been thinking about similar control via zigbee switches for a while now. Although I’m just looking at the possibility of using additional buttons to control other devices in the room. This confirms that that would be possible. I also like the neutral wire solution although I’m lucky enough to have a neutral wire. Great video, would love to see more content like this! 👍💪

    Thanks for teh video again! Just a quick question can this process be done in teh same way with teh other light switch that has no need for a neutral wire I installed a 1 gang and all was ok but now need a 3 gang and concerned about all the com on it! Also, I have had it trip many times and had to remove earth wire for some strange reasons. Any help much appreciated

    • @GeekStreet
      @GeekStreet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, do you mean a smart switch with more buttons? I yes then the method should work fine I was using like this for a couple of months before I went over to using Zigbee switches.
      Bit concerned about you having to remove the earth cable that doesn't sound good. If your not sure best to get an electrician in to check.

    Is the downside to this method that your ceiling rose is permanently live? While this is great for a smart bulb, it can be bad if you want to change a bulb. You'd just have to be careful or turn off at the circuit breaker?

    • @GeekStreet
      @GeekStreet  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the junction point in the circuit, if you don't see then its normally hidden under your flooring / ceiling. There are other solutions search youtube for 'Geek Street No neutral'

      Thanks for the quick reply. I have already installed a couple of no neutral zigbees and checked your various reviews. However, I just bought a very nice inovelli smart fan control that I would really like to use so I was trying to find a way to get an effective neutral into a switch box. Back to the drawing board.

    • @GeekStreet
      @GeekStreet  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is that a ceiling fan? You could try lifting some floor board and see if can locate the junction box? Or locate any lighting circuit junction box and run a cable from there, you may find in a landing area. Hope that helps

    I’ve been thinking about this a lot. Hooking the load wire to neutral is fine for a smart switch. However, if a future homeowner replaces the smart switch with a regular switch and then turns it on... they’ve just created a short circuit and you better hope the circuit breakers are working.

    • @carlosmontoya2584

      Yes, is possible, you need that all the other devices' power cables have to be connected to the same wall smart switch (1 to 4 gangs) or to be already separated smart devices. Then you set up a smart routine in your smart app.

    I am an electrician. 20 odd years. There is nothing wrong with this. All wires are correctly identified which is the important thing. My only concern is that when your Internet... nevermind you just said that. Its WiFi dependent. I believe that home assistant would solve this.

      @GeekStreet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From an electrician its good to get this confirmed as ok to do, thanks. I've had issues with wifi and its a damn hassle. So I've moved over to using Zigbee light switches.

    • @shaunwoodlock4349
      @shaunwoodlock4349 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As a sparky, although nothing wrong with the wiring, I would identify the cable at both ends to indicate that it was once used as the switch wire. I sometimes put the same coloured sleeving on the conductors, which tells me it is the switch wire. This helps when there are several wires in one box where I might run the feeds down to a switch rather than the light, as a live and neutral would then go to the light, but it would be switched live on the live, not the sleeved neutral. I use this method when several banks of downlighters are required and too many wires to fit into the first light. All the wires are at the switch not the light.

    I notice you are using a pendant, so this trick works well (providing that the live and neutral is in the rose - it usually is), another 'hack' you can do to this would be to use one of these from amazon amzn.to/3e3Up8H. essentially what you would find on a table lamp. Although I'd actually mark on it what's on / off. that way you could isolate without having to flip the consumer unit breaker.

    I never own any smart home devices but wanted to get one. I got questions, what happen if house power is off and back on. 1) because power has altered to permanent , does the light bulb would turn on by itself once the power is back on or does the light bulb can remember the last state? 2) if the power has cut and back on, do i need to reconnect the switch and bulb again with the WIFI via the APP? i really love smart technology but don't like anything out of my control.

    • @GeekStreet
      @GeekStreet  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      1) The light would turn on it does not remember its last state, if this is an issue you could setup a smart scene to turn the light off if its on during the day.
      2) Confirm is saved so you dont have to reconnect.
      Hope that helps! Check out the other smart tech videos I have done, there are other no neutral light switches available too.

    Great idea but for this to work your existing wiring needs to be of a Loop in configuration, some homes are wired with all the light and switch wires going back to a central joint box.

      If you have loop in at switch to be honest these days you are lucky and can just fit a smart switch without any modifications! This is to compensate for having no neutral at the switch.

    Doesn’t makes sense to also put in a smart switch when you installed smart bulb. Does this brand sells a battery operated wireless switch? A wireless switch should be able to do the same thing. Btw there are smart switches that don’t require neutral and don’t need a capacitor. Check out Xiaomi Aqara stuff
