Gordon Lightfoot's original version was very intimate, so a choral presentation of this song loses a little bit of that singular POV. This presentation was beautifully done.
Yes, I was thinking the same thing when this arrangement was given to my show choir (I'd felt the same way when we did a choral version of Joni Mitchell's River). But we often play for laughs when we sing, so when we performed this one, it really knocked the audience out.
One of the members of my show choir is in her 20s, and she didn't know who Gordon Lightfoot was. (We are in Canada, BTW!) We all leaped at her with our phones to play this song and many others. She knows who he is now!
