    I heard: About six weeks to first harvest, up to four harvests - 10 days apart. A 35' bed is yielding approximately $200 worth in each harvest. Nice numbers Curtis.

    Curtis, what is your spacing on your plants - I'm getting ready to plant my winter crop and planted it in planter boxes the last time I tried to grow it. My seeds are about 2 years old so hope they will still germinate.

    I noticed that my red russian kale was going to seed (it formed a flower heard but didn't open up yet). Can I cut the flower head off and save the kale or is it too late and the kale will taste bitter? Also, how densely are you planting your kale (a seed every 4 inches or so? Thank you.

    About to buy a Jang seeder, over in Australia. Have you tried the Johnny's 6 row seeder? Surely that would be quicker than doing 6 runs with the Jang, or is there too much mucking around getting the 6 row working right? Cheers for the great clips!

    • @offgridcurtisstone
      @offgridcurtisstone  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I have and I sold it. It might seem faster, but it's not always. You have to be a lot more careful in bed prep. It's not a fast tool. I can literally run when using the Jang.

    Could you tell me what your spacing is on your kale plants? Also I was wondering, when you start them by seed in the cells, do you put one see or a few and do you thin them to one plant or just plant what you get?

    • @offgridcurtisstone
      @offgridcurtisstone  8 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @ptrain9020
      @ptrain9020 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On page 195 you mention that you grow head lettuce. I thought the only kind of lettuce you grew was the Salanova. On page 196 you have a 9 in the row/bed column for Russian Kale. What does the 9 mean? So you use 17 grams or .60oz per 25 feet of bed. So you load your seeder and then go back and forth until the seed hopper is empty? How far apart is each pass with your seeder?

    • @offgridcurtisstone
      @offgridcurtisstone  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I've grown many things before. I don't grow head lettuce anymore in that context. 9 means, 9 rows in a 30" bed. Plant 9 rows and that's it. The 9 rows are equal distance apart. Start with 3 rows, then spilt the difference to make 5, then split the difference to make 9. No measurements required. All of that is explained in the book. Keep reading. Good luck.

    I was hoping you could clear up a discrepancy from your book. Fig 6 (Crop Profiles) & Fig 49 (Seed sowing Density) both have 'Apr-Sep' for when to direct seed. Fig 49 doesn't have a date for first GH/PLT plant date but the crops section (production) says it's one of the first greens you direct seed in the greenhouse; "my earliest seeding would be late February". If you could, please verify the dates from the book, it would be greatly appreciated.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    When to | First | First Field | Last Field | Last
    DS | GH/PLT | Plant Date | Plant Date | GH/PLT

      Ctwo First They do have one that is not powered by a drill, but just a long blade attached to a similar basket with a handle. I thought about getting that one, but people said the issue would be that if they didnt get a thick stand of greens it was almost useless, as trying to cut the greens, they would just fall over instead. The non-powered unit is $250 or so...
