My dad used to referee speedway in So. Cal in the 70’s and 80’s. Many fond memories watching at Costa Mesa and Irwindale. Many great American riders back in the day. Penhall, the Bast brothers, Schwartz, the Morans, Sonny Nutter, Sigalo, Brad Oxley, and Ken Maley-the steel shoe guy. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for the great memories from the 70s. My favorite was Sonny Nutter.
This video posted by the CITY OF COSTA MESA! Thank you so much for posting this! I've been a Speedway fan for a very long time, and even sponsored Speedway here on the East Coast in the late 90's at Champion Speedway in Owego, NY. It's a good feeling to know that a municipality recognizes this sport as something so important to so many. Great job COSTA MESA!
Miss it so much after moving away. Best thing to do on a Summer Night near the beach! Speedway racing at Costa Mesa is the best racing!
Costa Mesa is where I grew up. I was 15 years old in 1980. Surfed all the time. I met Bruce Penhall in my mother's dermatologists clinic. I seen Bruce race in Costa Mesa and countless times during surfing
Wow it was amazing to see Bobby Swartz still racing at 66 yrs old . I watched him in England in the 80s great rider .
Hi , nice to see Costa Mesa California . I wish long live to speedway in USA. from Riga Latvia Hi Laura !!
Fantastic history so many great American riders grew up on that track and became speedway stars.
I saw Bobby Schwartz race in New Zealand at a track called Ruapuna in I think 1983.
It is a big track 400Mtrs and he rode the concrete wall all the way around and I mean right on the wall I have never seen anything so spectacular before or since.
He is a racers racer that is why he still rides.
Tumbleweed Walton,Elliot Sheltman, remember getting tear offs for turn 1 & 2 for the dirt . My 75 yr old grandma loved it she got a beer poured on her
this was great been there a few times in the 70's and early 80's. lived in costa mesa most of my young life
I've spent many nights watching racing under lights just walking distance from the house. Absolutely love to see it
These are the best races anywhere!🎉😊
I used to go to the Orange county speedway late sixties early seventies. Still my favorite racing to watch.
Loved watching speedway there in 84-87 when i was stationed at Norton Air Force Base
First time I went was with the motorcycle club from Dana Jr High in San Diego back in 1975.
Very Good Production.
Sounds like Kcrp in Bakersfield is the new home base of speedway in 24.....
Wow Boogaloo still going strong at 66!
